Broadway production closes Jan. 6... or so Cammack claims.

http://www.broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=22514

Of course, he also claimed this would be a limited 6-month run. I'm crossing my fingers that it'll extend at least a couple weeks past the 6th so I can go up and see it on my birthday.
herkind

I remember when the original run announced it's closing date so many people rushed out to buy tickets that they ended up pushing it back a couple of months. I wouldn't be surprised if they did it again since Cammack loves to milk this cash cow for all it is worth.
I have heard rumors that Equus wants the Broadhurst when they transfer next summer though.
I wish I could see it again though. I won't be back in New York until March... Crying or Very sad
lesmisloony

I shouted a curse word at the sight of this topic. I had hoped to see it again this coming summer (my next chance to visit NYC). Ah well, maybe Jesus will smile upon me and I can pull something together for Christmas (not likely)... *cries*

Though I may be able to get my hands on a bootleg...

Is there a chance it will be revived again someday? Maybe? Does that happen?

No, shows are never revived more than once, especially shows like The King and I and Man of La Mancha. They go into the vault and never return to Broadway. Ever.

Probably not for a long time. However, there are regional productions popping up everywhere. Maybe they'll do one near North Carolina soon...*crosses fingers*

Ever heard of Grease?
lesmisloony

What about Grease ? It was revived more than once ?

(I'd look it up, but I don't like to think about that show for any reason, much less wade through pages of google... guess I could check ibdb, but it kind of sucks.)

http://www.ibdb.com/show.asp?ID=4056

Yep, ibdb says Grease has been revived twice. *gasp* Does this contradict the words of the Very Angry Woman ?

I think they were confused because you didn't club them over the head with a "sarchasm" icon.
Orestes Fasting

Was "sarchasm" a misspelling, or deliberate? (The fact that I have to ask is making my irony meter explode.)
The Very Angry Woman

sarchasm ('sr-"ka-z&m) : The giant gulf (chasm) between what is said and the person who doesn't get it.
Orestes Fasting

Well, yeah, I was just wondering whether that's what Set_Buildin_Dad meant, or whether it was a typo. If it was deliberate, I am obviously on the other side of the sarchasm.
mastachen

I'm curious... if there were an influx of of people who want to buy tickets, would it affect student rushers?
Orestes Fasting

AFAIK, only if the show consistently sells out, at which performances there would be no rush tickets available.
lesmisloony

*eyeroll*

Another topic has successfully become a snarkfest. Kudos.
Orestes Fasting

TVAW snark happens to the best of us. Laughing

While I do kind of wish it would extend some more, I know Equus is going to be in the Broadhurst in May, which means Les Mis probably won't be there past February. Ah well, all things must end. At least when it closes it'll stop eating all my money and free time, and I can get back to useful things like translating the PRC lyrics or updating my website.

I just wish the closing cast were stronger. (Assuming there won't be any more cast changes.)
Fantine

Woo sarchasm. Thanks for adding another new word to my English vocabulary. Nice.

Anyway... Talking about reviving the revival before it has even ended? Jeez. Seize the day people! Carpe Diem!
Set_Buildin_Dad

Sorry about the misspelling folks. Embarassed Sometimes I misspell stuff when I'm going too fast. I do like TVAW's definition though. Laughing Could become an MdN inside joke.

Come on. You walked right into that one.
Eponine93

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

This efficentally kills my plans for my school trip in the spring. I was really looking forward to it too. If the school trip didn't turn out, I was planning to student rush in the spring when it wasn't so cold out. Now I'm never going to get in the city before it closes, and even if it does I won't get tickets.

Plus, I have to admit to my history teacher with all my message boards and everything I was still wrong about it closing before spring.
lesmisloony

You know it's the start of a bad day when potterpuppetpals.com is shut down and LM announces it's leaving Broadway. Again. But this time there's almost no chance of a mad dash to see one of the final shows. Alas.
EponinesRain

Dammit, I wanted to watch JOJ again and see how he fares with the American cast. Though, according to other threads, it seems that he's brilliant as ever. He was definitely a great Valjean in London for my virgin Les Mis experience- hehe.

I also wanted to see Judy Kuhn's performance, not to compare her to Lea, but just to see how she interprets the role, what she can bring to it. Also, Jenny Galloway. And, maybe watch Max Von Essen on a good day? I've seen some of his other stuff (ahem, you know where...) and he was a great Enjolras in those! Why not when I went to see him? Sad Same with Megan.

Oh well-- summer vacay plans are changed. Hmm, what am I doing over winter vacation...? *snickers*

Sarchasm? Awesome. Cool
Quique

I was expecting it to close sometime during April. A little bit disappointing as I daydreamed about it getting better and stronger and lasting forever, but not really all that surprised.
lesmisloony

Someone brought this up on the "musicals" board at imdb, and everyone immediately started talking about what a terrible musical LM is and how commercial it is and how they don't care it's going. Someone even called it a "guilty pleasure." Last time I visit THOSE boards.

...because I hate getting into cyber-fights. I think they're a waste of time. So to defend my poor show before all those elitists would be difficult, would lead nowhere, and would probably result in a long drawn-out argument over what constitutes a "good" musical.

Interesting, though, because I tend to be elitist myself when it comes to other things *coughandrewlloydwebbercough* But, I mean, cripes, are there people out there who think Sondheim is bad ? Where does elitism end ?

Oh come on, if you go on IMDB with expectations you're just going to get disappointed. Everything that's popular has its detractors and some places just attract these people more than others.

Cortney Wolfson ForTheEponine!

Does this mean she'll never permanently get the role!?

Very Angry Woman is right, there are those people that like to down certain things that are popular. There are people over at broadwayworld.com that are happy about Les Mis closing, too.

My dream of hearing her sing "On My Own" will never come true
Trevor reincarnate

It's on youtube.

herkind

There's still time for her to go on as an understudy before January 6th. (I don't think she has yet.) Then again, Megan almost never misses. Anyway, Cortney sounds wonderful in that clip!
Orestes Fasting

I have never seen Megan miss a show since she had the flu when she first became principal. And before that, even in the ensemble, she was never out.

On the other hand, the fact that nobody's ever seen her miss means that she hasn't had a vacation in ages... I wonder if she has one scheduled before the show closes.

By the way, where'd you all hear about Cortney?

(Oh, and am I to take it that JOJ's vacation for the first two weeks of January is cancelled? Dammit, and I wanted to see Ben Crawford.)
herkind

Cortney was featured on Andrew Keenan-Bolger's (aka Celia's little brother) video blog a lot since they were in the same class at University of Michigan. That's how I heard of her, at least. She seems like she'd be a good Eponine since she has a lot more spunk than Megan. How is she in the ensemble?

Megan is almost never out. I heard somewhere that she never missed a single performance of Little Women. Maybe she'll take a vacation for the holidays though.
Orestes Fasting

Aaaah, that would be it.

I haven't noticed her much, but she has one of the smallest ensemble roles.
mastachen

When I went to see it, it was Marissa McGowan... but that was back in June.

Wasn't she the first understudy back then? That must have meant Megan was sick or something.
Orestes Fasting

Back in June was when Mandy Bruno, er, left early, so Megan filled in for her and was eventually made principal. But she also had the flu around that time, so she missed a lot of performances and Marissa was on.
mastachen

Oh, I see.

Marissa was pretty awesome though, so I have nothing to complain about, and I sat in the very first row. Everything happened right in front of me. Eponine died in front of me, Fantine sang I Dreamed a Dream right in front of me, and during Look Down, one of the beggars actually seemed to be asking me for money, and when Gavroche came out and they all retreated, I felt really bad for not giving her a dollar.

Looking back, if the orchestrations were back to normal and I had someone other than Jeff Kready play Valjean, then that would have been the perfect Les Mis experience.
Orestes Fasting

Really? I loved Jeff Kready.
herkind

I loved Jeff Kready too. I saw him back in March and thought he was fantastic especially since he's what 25?

Didn't Megan get promoted one week, have taken away the next and then given back the next? I heard that somewhere and wouldn't put it past Cammack given the other stuff he's pulled.
Orestes Fasting

Apparently, yeah. Not that it really mattered because she was either playing Eponine or out with the flu the whole time, since they didn't have anyone else to be principal.

It's funny, Jeff's younger than most of the students are canonically supposed to be, and yet until JOJ came along he was the only Broadway Valjean to actually look old in Act II. Drew and Alex both looked like thirtysomethings with white wigs slapped on.
mastachen

I thought he was vocally weak, and Ben Crawford as Javert totally overpowered him during the Confrontation. I wasn't impressed by his acting either, but his Bring Him Home, vocally, was good.

Speaking of Ben Crawford, that guy can sing!! But acting-wise... I don't know how to describe it. He just seemed pissed off the entire time he was onstage. But I really really have to give him props for vocals. His Stars brought down the house. There were cheers and applause and whistles. Amazing audience response.
eponine5

It does seem a bit odd that it's closing so suddenly, what with the recent cast change and scheduled holidays. Is the theatre getting empty at all?

I wonder how this will affect the Valjean swap. Drew Sarich got the good side of the deal, it seems, but will JOJ be without a job, at least until (as rumour has it) he returns to the London production? They seem to have got themselves into very confusing contract issues...
lesmisloony

Success !

I got in touch with my other obsessed friend, and we might be able to take a train up to NYC (that's a friggin ten-hour ride, LM, so I hope you are as awesome as I fully expect you to be), see the show, and then take another train back the next day. It'll end up costing around $300, but I've been squirrelling money away from working at movie theatres since I was fifteen, so I think I can manage...

I agree about Ben Crawford--fabulous voice, one-note acting.

Jeff impressed me because his Valjean was smart. Lots of Valjeans emerge from prison as brutes; Jeff was more... I don't know, sly. And he kept it up. In that way he was a great match for Rob, whose Javert is also smart--it was fun to watch them bounce off each other in that scene after the Runaway Cart.

Jeff may not have the most powerful voice on stage, but it's not weak, and he has a much more even vocal tone than any of his predecessors in this production. (Drew is... Drew, Alex and Ivan both have strange-sounding falsetto, and Ivan was having vocal problems to boot. It was a relief to see Jeff.) JOJ blows him out of the water, but JOJ blows everyone out of the water.

I actually noticed that too. I remember watching Les Mis a couple years back, and when Randal Keith emerged from prison, he seemed really bitter and angry at the world. Jeff was different though, in that he was just kinda "Ok I've been released, now let's see what this new world can do for me." I wouldn't know about how his vocals compared with any of the others in the production as I've only seen the revival once, but I mentioned earlier that his Bring Him Home was actually pretty impressive and his falsetto seemed very effortless. I am planning on seeing it again in late December, and I'm hoping to see JOJ. He's probably the only reason that I'm spending $900 for my second trip to NY this year.
Orestes Fasting

*g* If you were mentally comparing him to Randal, I can see why you'd be underwhelmed. Randal and JOJ are probably the best Valjeans to grace the stage in recent years.

One other thing I remember really liking about Jeff: he was very tender with Cosette in In My Life, and resigned rather than angry in the scene where he lets Javert go. Alex, Drew, and JOJ all have temper outbursts in those two scenes, and Jeff didn't. (Though given that that's a pretty specific idiosyncracy for three consecutive Valjeans to have, I'm inclined to put this down to crappy direction that Jeff somehow escaped.)
