Daphne leaves revivial Feb-April

A little bit of news for everyone: (And good news if you didn't like her...)

Daphne Rubin-Vega, who had been previously announced as a star of Bob Glaudini's new play Jack Goes Boating at the LAByrinth Theater Company, will take a leave of absence from the Broadway company of Les Miserables from February 18 to April 11, 2007, to fulfill her commitment. She is currently playing Cosette's doomed mother Fantine in Les Miz, which opened at the Broadhurst Theatre on November 9.
Rubin-Vega, a member of the ensemble at LAByrinth, will co-star with the company's co-artistic directors Philip Seymour Hoffman and John Ortiz and ensemble member Beth Cole in Jack Goes Boating, directed by Peter DuBois. The play is a world premiere and has been announced to open in March 2007; the company is in residence at the Public Theater. LAByrinth press materials offer this cryptic description of the play: "Swimming lessons. Cooking classes. A random subway attack. Confessions of betrayal. Cocaine paranoia. A best friend's meltdown. How much is too much for a date with someone you've just met?"

Does anyone know Daphne's holiday dates for Dec/Jan? I'm sort of hoping to go when she's off...

I heard that as well, and I can't say I'm too upset. I respect her as a person, but I just don't like her as an actress.

This isn't news. Her involvement in Jack Goes Boating was set before the Les Miz announcement was made.

so what? she's leaving! Now's your chance to see it before she comes back!

I'm having enough trouble convincing my grandpa to get me tickets. Now I have to convince him to get me them when she's off.

Who is going to be replacing/understudying her at that time?

They haven't said yet, but they did hold closed auditions.

From the clips I saw, I didn't think she was that bad.

From having seen her live, she was that bad.
What Is This Feeling?

When I saw her live, my friend told me she sucked, and I was like "Noooooooo!" I loved Daphne's portrayel of Mimi in Rent, but yes, I know, very different parts. Then, I saw her. And I didn't think she sucked. I just think it wasn't the part for her. Her acting wasn't bad though. So, yeh, I heard they are going to be announcing her replacement after the New Year! So, anytime now, i have a hunch I know who it's going to be!....

I saw her in the Broadway revival a while ago and to echo what other people have said, I can't say I'm sorry that she's leaving. She tended to speak, rather that sing her lines, which I have to say would have been preferable to her singing if her voice could carry the tune... but it couldn't. I'm not insulting her ability to do other sorts of musicals in maybe a more modern style of music, but I found it heartbreaking more than anything to see this amazing part being slaughtered in this way. Especially since some of my relatives were seeing it for the first time and I really wanted them to appreciate how great Fantine can be.
I might have forgiven her if the acting was alright, but I despised it, perhaps even more than her voice. She seemed totally unconnected to the part and during Fantine's arrest she didn't show any of the grief of conflict that Fantine should be going through at that point. I wanted to strangle her when instead of getting down on the floor after being beaten by Bamatabois, she simple kneeled on the stage with her head down and the only sounds she made while being dragged across the stage were pathetic little "ow's". And okay, maybe they did change some of the lines for the revival, but I'm pretty certain in "At the end of the Day" she was not meant to go "And her father abandoned us leaving us flat, now I.... live with a man and his wife and I pay for the child what's the matter with that?"
And is the line in the Epilogue right after Valjean dies meant to be "Come TO me"??????????????????!!!!!!!!! d'oh!

I thought her acting was actually quite good in ATEOTD. But she didn't look like she knew what to do with IDAD and just sort of went downhill from there--by Lovely Ladies I had just started tuning her out and watching the whores go at it with their customers off to the sides of the stage instead of paying attention to the main action.

Wow. Heh. No, sounds like you witnessed a special unique flub.

Has her replacement been announced yet? I thought it was supposed to be announced sometime this week.
The Very Angry Woman

Supposedly yes, it will be released this week, but nothing official has been said yet.
