Fox's new two-disc set

The Los Angeles Times reported in today's paper that Fox will be releasing a two-disc "Les Miserables" set that features the 1935 and 1952 productions.

It goes on to say that the 1935 version stars Fredric March as Valjean and Charles Laughton as Javert. It was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture. This film also stars Rochelle Hudson, Frances Drake and Florence Eldridge. The writer says that the 1952 adaptation pales in comparison to the former film, despite a good cast of Michael Rennie as Valjean and Robert Newton as Javert. The second film is directed by Lewis Milestone and stars Sylvia Sidney, Debra Paget and Elsa Lanchester. "And at one point, producer Darryl F. Zanuck bandied the idea of Orson Welles as the villain."

Hrm, looks like a worthy purchase. Can't wait for it to come out! Smile

It's available to pre-order on Amazon.com. I can't wait either! I hope I'll finally see a version of Les Mis that follows the storyline and keeps the semi-important characters (Eponine, Enjolras, The Thenardiers, etc.) in.

*strangles 1998 version*

I can't stand the 1998 version! It''s too inaccurate! I mean, come on! Marius leading the Revolution? Valjean smiling at Javert's death? And don't even get me started about Cosette holding a gun!!!

Eh...don't get your hopes up too much. I enjoy the '35 version (as well as the '98 version) but it's not what you should go to if you want a reliable adaption, just forget about the source material and you'll have a much better time watching them.

I haven't seen the '52 version so I can't comment on that one.

Well, I meant a version that was a bit more accuate than the 1998 version.

But please don't think that I'm one of those "it has to follow the storyline excatly or else" people, cause I'm not. I can be flexable about that sort of thing most of the time.

Either way, I'm still excited about the DVD release! Very Happy

I know what you mean. See, I liked the first part of the 1998 version until Fantine died and then the rest of the script bastardized the novel. I wouldn't have minded if they only gave minor focus to Eponine, the Thenardiers, or Enjolras, but to completely eliminate their parts? That was a major disappointment. What miffed me more was that they listed these characters in the credits-- all the students' names are there-- but they never ever really distinguished them from the rest of the cast. Bleh.

Anyway, I'm excited to see that Gregg Toland did the cinematography for the 1935 rendition! Didn't know until I IMDBed the film. That in itself should be a plus.

They are in the movie, their just very minor characters.

The African-American who's standing by Marius at Lamarque's (sp?) death-believe it or not-that's Enjolras.

Eponine is there-but only as a child in the scene where Valjean comes and takes Cosette away.

Same with the Thenardiers-you only see them in that scene.

I liked the first half too, but the second half was just awful!

Oh, I know. I guess I should have been clearer. I meant that I was miffed that they eliminated the older Eponine and older Thenardiers. And, yeah, I was aware that that was Enjolras, but it was as if he wasn't there at all b/c he just didn't act or function as Enjolras does in the novel. Sure he kind of reprimanded Marius for going to see Cosette, but still...They could have so easily tagged the name "Enjolras" on any of the extras and it wouldn't have changed anything.

Very true. I too, am not too happy that they eliminated the older Eponine and Thenardiers. I'm also not too happy that Enjolras didn't run everything.

At least in the 1978 version, they kept Enjolras in as the leader. Which is one reason why I like that version better. Although Cosette seemed to have an arrogant air in that version.
