I'm a naive newbie and need your help!!

Hello!

I am relatively new to Les Miserables. I haven't seen the musical but I know the basic plot and have listened to the OBC recording numerous times. I still need info on certain characters and performers and stuff.

So. First question:

Who are the students (specifically) and why are they important?

Even the most hopeless n00b would have been able to find this by himself:

What is this, twenty questions? Go read the book like the rest of us did instead of expecting us to do your homework for you.

Or go watch the musical -- there are regional productions all over the US and it's still running in London. The students appear in the musical. Heck, you might even be able to find Red and Black or the Final Battle on YouTube, since you're apparently fond of watching LM clips on YouTube.

Hello,

Students are always important in revolutions, because they are the ones who do it lol.

Try to get hold of the book, and go to : Part three: Marius, Book Four: The ABC Society.

You will learn some really cool stuff about the revolution, and the individual students. If it is a homework, you will impress your teacher. If it is an honest question, you will love the deatiled background on the students.

Fine. I'll go read the book.

You guys don't have to be jerks to him/her about it.
The students are important in the musical because they are the revolutionaries; they represent the group of people during that time period who were well-educated on the theories of people like John Locke and decided that popular sovereignty was the way to go. That's not a totally complete summary of why they're important but that's the basic idea. Go see the show, it's great!

Not really a smart idea. And that's because I can go on that page, and write about how Les Mis was a play about a magical fairy that ate toenails in France. Everything I read on wikipedia,I take with a grain of salt.

If you're embarresed or anything, please don't be. You are doing the right thing by taking the first step and asking some questions. And if it makes you feel any better, I am kind of a n00b when it comes to Sondheim, I only know West Side Story, some of Gypsy, a little Into the Woods, one song from Sunday In The Park With George, and half of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to The Forum (THE MOVIE Wink ). Really, just listen to whatever musicals you want to and just keep listening, and if other people know it and you don't it's no big deal, because you may know a musical that they don't know. That's the cool thing about this place, sharing knowledge, opinions, and experiences with other lovers of musical theatre.

Oh and btw, don't think that people hate you or anything, because believe me they don't and they wont. I remember when I made a random counting game in the social club forum when there were already like 2, and people were juist like, WTF, but believe, nobody even remembers or knows what I'm talking about.
