I saw LM today - review

I've been wanting to see the current cast for a while, and this morning I decided, on a whim, to haul myself to London (suffering an almost 2 hour train journey - whee! Rolling Eyes) to see LM live on stage for the 5th time in my life. I went all out and booked a seat in the stalls, something I've never done before because stalls are too expensive. But, I deserved a treat. So I got a GREAT seat (Row E, seat 10) and I've got to say, despite the negative things I've heard about this cast, I had a great time.

John Owen Jones was phenomenal. I've seen him before, but he just blows me away. For me, he's my favourite Valjean ever (beating even Colm). A+

I'm not entirely sure what I make of Cornell John. He has a great voice but there's a lack of something...he doesn't seem to really act much. Not my favourite Jarvet but not terrible. B.

Kerry Ellis had a lovely voice but her Fantine seemed to snivell an awful lot. But I liked her all the same...people have compared her to Ruthie Henshall and I can see why. Like Ruthie, Kerry packs a lot of emotion in there. I just wanted to give Fantine a hug at the end of IDAD. A-

The Thenardier's...I loved them. It was quite weird seeing a very slim Mme T, since I've only seen plump looking Mme T's, but she was good. MOTH and BOTF were as funny as they should be, I really enjoyed them. A.

Sadly Marius was played by an understudy (rather than Hayden Tee, and I really wanted to see what he was like *pouts*) but he was good. Didn't really look too Mariusy to me but he had a strong voice and moved me on ECAET, and had good chemistry with the cast. For an understudy, very good. A- (sorry, I can't remember the understudy's name. It was John something)

Shonagh Daly. Well, while I thought she was a little loud in places I did enjoy her Eponine! She played her bratty but likeable. But I do have to agree with GayBoy who said that she sang ALFOR like it was "Tomorrow" from Annie. Aside from near the end of the song where she twitches a bit, it's hard to believe she's been hurt at all let alone shot. She also kissed Marius before she died (and I hate that...is it standard now? All the Eponine's seem to do it). She was good though, pleasant voice and great presence. A-

Julia Mller - OMG! This woman actually made me LIKE Cosette. I do like Cosette anyway, but when they put a bad actress in the role she can be a real no personality turn off. Julia's Cosette was sweet and likeable and very charasmatic. She gave Cosette real personality and she has the PRETTIEST voice. I adored her, she was amazing. Maybe even the best member of the cast. A+

Shaun Escoffery - Good Enjolras, though not sure that his voice was right at times. He had good presence though, I could believe him as the leader. B.

Gavroche was a bit strange. The actor playing him sounded a bit too posh in parts, and like he was thinking of what to say/do next. There was cuteness, but not quite enough. Not the best one I've seen unfortunantly. B.

Little Cosette was pretty cute, and had a sweet voice, but I found her a bit bland for some reason. I don't know why. B.

Don't think there's anyone else to mention. Despite a few niggles (sometimes words that should be powerful weren't sung powerfully enough, a few instances where I couldn't hear the lyrics, and an idiot girl behind me who kept humming the damn songs and whispering with her friends - hope that wasn't anyone on here) I really enjoyed it and still think the show is worthy of an A grade overall. I was worried I'd feel like I'd wasted money and a trip but I'm glad I went. It was a lot of fun...and I still get really choked up at the Finale.

Well it is just my opinion...I know some people have been very disappointed. I went in with low expectations. I don't know if that helped, but I did like it.

Nice Smile

When I saw Shonagh she tried to kiss Marius but died just before her lips could reach him. That was kind of sad. I wonder if they permanently changed that now though...

John Owen-Jones hardcore. Very Happy Glad to hear you liked the show, pity you missed Hayden but I've been told Mr Addison knows a thing or two.

I was impressed by Addison, with the exception of this one point at the end of ALFOR and Eponine did her "And rain will make the flowers...." And Addison took about what seemed like 5 minutes to say grow. Other than that a flawless performance from a fantastic understudy!

Well why not? Every other bugger in the theatre seems to think it's a bloody sing along! Brick wall

Did you stage door? John Owen Jones is so lovely at stage door. (My photo of him and me is my phone wallpaper...yes i'm that cool :p). As is Hayden but i was to shy to ask for a photo with him...too intimidated by his adorableness.

I am a huge fan of Kerry Ellis. I was before i saw her in Les Mis and i thought she was excellent both times i saw her. She has improved so much and i think it's very sad she appears to be leaving at cast change.
Fantine

Hayden is a cutie indeed Very Happy
Eponine1832

He is indeed! Though I'm not a big fan of him when he's actually onstage(least he's not Michael Ball-all i can say on the matter) And thats why I was so shocked at how cute he looked at stage door. Could also be cause he's such a sweet and luverly person
