IDEA ----- Forum Cast... please read

Does anyone else want to do the whole "cats casting" thing??...it sort of sucks because there aren't as many roles in this as there are cats....but I thought it would be fun!!! I'd be willing to take myself out of it and be the coordinator if need be!! =D

[I edited the title only--- Aimee]
Marie-leah

how do you mean? Sounds like it could be fun ^^
Ep-Griz-Reno

Well everyone gets on this topic and they write about themselves, and based off of that, the users vote to see which user seems most like each characters and then the votes are tallied, and whoever wins, is like the temporary "cast" of the forum...I think the cats do it once every few months or so =D
bwaybrunette21

I sooo want to be in! I always wanted to do the CATS one but I am not that big a fan.
Aimee

I am putting a temporary hold on this thread as I need to see how it's done. We have a 'cast' here already and so those parts must be respected [if he people still post here and it also sounds to me very much like a 'virtual' cast which we don't do.

I'll ask the Cats forum mods how they do it and get back to you soon.

Please be patient.

Thanks.
Aimee

This is the reply from MsJ about this, so I say that we go for it Smile. Fun!! hehehe Laughing

There are two reservations though.... If and only if, people from the past forum casts object in the next 5 days we allow them to keep their names. That way it gives them notice and a chance to keep the names they already have. This seems fair to me. Don't you think?

The second is that the mods on the forum run it. That lets Ep-Griz-Reno off th hook for running it.

We will start it officially in 5 days time on a new thread.

Cheers Aimee

Quote:

The casting is all based on personality. For example, most CATS fans know that the character Etcetera is very hyper and fun-loving and very 'kittenish' (or one could describe her as the typical little childe who sees things from an innocent, childs point of view). So when we do the casting, people would cast the forum member they think most acts hyper and fun-loving, etc as Etcetera. That's just one of the characters.

We do not 'audition'. We do not record our voices or anything like that. So, it's not a 'virtual audition' or anything like that. It's all based solely on personality and how the members act and view other members. It's a good thing, at least in the CATS forum it is. We get to know each other a little bit better and see how others think of us (somewhat). We hold the casting twice a year. Once in January and once in July. It's held twice a year so that newer members have a chance to possibly get a role and it's not just the oldbies who have a part all the time (although some members such as myself tend to get cast in the same role each time).

You can read our rules and how we do it in this thread here:
http://www.musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49958
And a week or two before we start the casting, we put up a 'discussion thread' with the rules and such in it as well so that people can have an opportunity to declare their interest in participating and describe themselves if they want.
http://www.musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49740
The casting will end tomorrow night and I will be doing the tallies as to who got cast in which role the most, and that is our cast list for the next six months. I'll probably be posting that in a few days.

Fantine

Seems interesting. We've done this before though... About one year ago? We have all been cast. I don't mind to be re-cast though.
Moci

It seems as if it could be interesting, but is it possibly that it could be done without taking over practically the entire forum, like the Cats one? Also, can we put the people we don't like down as Montparnasse, Brujon etc? Who wants to be a whore too? Wink
Fantine

Hahaha well, people like the whore Madeleine in Look Down, has a strong personality. So you could look at her in that way instead of the 'whore' fact Wink

I think we should only cast the named characters. So not whore #1 or whatever, but Madeleine is good. And those that have solo lines such as the women and men in ATEOTD and the 'Factory bitch' Wink
flying_pigs

Are we doing it for the musical or the book as well. I remember we did something like this a while back and we had to cast someone who has posted above us? I got young Azelma Razz
Moci

If the book isn't taken into account, then the people who get cast as most of the ABC Students will be those who have no personality.
Fantine

Laughing
The book characters are very different from the musical ones. Old fashioned, if you get me. Seems hard to find people who match them.

The whores are the best roles in the entire show! Very Happy
Fantine

I don't intend to offend, but there are so many newbies that it's impossible (for me at least) to cast them. I don't know any of them. That, and they don't know me either.
Aimee

That's why it being done via the mods. We will check votes and IPs etc to make sure its all done fairly.

As I mentioned Fantine, there is already a cast and if those people want to keep their roles they have the right to say so now. Smile I was The Bishop. hehehehe

I thought that she meant that she can't distinguish 'Newbie 1' and 'Newbie 2' and has no idea if they are an exact personality match to Fantine, Cosette, Marius or Fifth Convict from the left.

It was first done a lot longer ago than that. If memory serves, in about 2003 (see banner below)

Yay! I'm glad this is back up! Very Happy

So are we going to do the cats thing and post our personalities and all that jazz, or are we just voting miss aimee?
audreydarling

I think we should do the personalities thing..or something..to give the newbies a chance Smile this sounds really cool though..I'm totally in!

Agreed.

And oooo I played Adelaide, and Maureen ((for a competition I did over the moon))
audreydarling

That's great..Ep-Griz-Reno. Adelaide was so much fun!..I almost did "take me or leave me" for a review thing..with my friends (me as maureen) and I most likely will perform one of the songd that maureen does in the future..I fell in love with the role again when I saw the show last night Smile

**sorry this was a little off topic..lol

Oh right, that was a good choice Very Happy I believe I was Fantine. I don't really see how our personalities changed so much that we should be cast differently this time.
And making lists about personalities seems useless to me. These can be manipulated (I love this guy but he doesn't love me back, or: we are in a great relationship) and dishonest. Furthermore it's not very likely that people will post about their negative points.
Quique

I wish to be cast as the silver candlesticks or Fantine's whore girdle. :S
musical4eva

i used to be like that wen we did les mis. the best of it was i was in luv wiv the guy playing marius!! he turned out to be gay tho but wer good mates now lol

that's actually a good point Confused hmm..well I don't know what we would use then..it might be difficult to find everyone's posts?..but I think this is still a great Idea!..maybe people should request roles and the mods could see their profiles or previous posts..and then could ask questions for further info by PMing or something! ..plus it's not like people would say for a role like thenardier "I like to con people and steal and I curse a lot"..so I say it obviously can't be an exact match..personality wise..and I really hope if we do personalities that people be honest.

well..I request Cosette or Eponine..I can kind of relate to both...I mean my love life is more like Eponine's so far..but I could aslo be Cosette because I am a dreamer and fall for people "at first sight" sort of..plus I have a really high voice!..lol.I don't see why people don't like Cosette..I feel that she is a strong character in her own way.it's probably because tons of people feel st strongly toward Eponine..and I can't blame them..it's pretty tragic!
Fantine

Good God.

Musical4eva, please don't post more than one messages at a time. And use your sense of good spelling.

In all seriousness, I never expect newbies to get big parts.

CAUSE WE DON'T KNOW YOU.

And requesting? How on earth can you request a personality?

Exactly, surely if your personality has had a chance to come through, someone will realise and cast you, if not, then people probaby won't have had a proper opportunity to get to know you yet and there'll probably be a next time. Very Happy

I think that there is something to be said about the fact that there is a bit of most of the characters in 'Les Mis' in everybody. Even though you'd much rather admit that you're saint-like in the way that Valjean is, you also bear some Thenardieresque tendencies too. Wink

Can I put in a request though that everyone doesn't post asking, "Can I be in this?" I've got faith that the mods will come up with a method for running this, but perhaps it'd be easier for people to post if they don't want to take part as opposed to everyone asking to be involved. Surely it's just taken for granted that people who post on the Les Mis board want to be involved, unless otherwise stated?
SapphireNight

I agree that casting for Les Mis will be very different and a lot harder then in Cats.
In Cats, we have 37 different cats to cast, each with their individual personalities. Some are very similar, but they span a a lot of different personality types- there is usually somethign for everyone. but, they are always descriptions of the 'better' side of a person, if you get my meaning (appart from one or two, which we usually cast for the better qualities, or just leave blank.)
For Les Mis, a lot of the characters are very bleak, and creating a 'positive personality list would be fairly hard. I think there are enough characters- youve got the main ones, which everyone will go after, but then after that, youve got parts which seem more generalisable- whores, ABC students, Thenardier's gang, etc, which unless you create them, dont have specific personalities. I suppose that might be easier- deciding between what two very similar personalities the qualities of someone is closest to is very hard sometimes, you could allocate a certain number of these roles in the casting, saying that they are like whatever.

And yes, i very much agree that a lot of the main characters are very individual in their personalities, that most people have a range of these different qualities.
In cats, we often put a description of our personalities in a specific thread, to help others in their casting. we use these personality descriptions, and what we know of people generally to decide who they best fit. We dont know eachother as well as you know your mates, but you do know your fellow posters quite well- well enough, usually, to get some idea of what they are like as a person.
I dont think requesting a role is a good idea, especially to the mods. it seems like they then get to do all of the hard work, and its not fair on them. its supposed to be a team effort by anyone who feels involved with the forum. mentioning who you would probably best fit when leaving a personality description, or when you ask to be included, would probably be a better idea.

And also, newbies would only get cast if they make an impression on the forum. People who you see come and go, but do not know, or people who have only just joined havent left enough of a mark for you to tell who they are as people, and so cant really be cast anyway. I am relatively new, but ive been very active on the Cats forum, and so ive been voted a lot in this casting (granted i was voted for different roles, but for me, i was amazed that ive actually been taken in like i have). Major posters tend to battle for their favourite/most like roles, and casting tends to come down to who has most votes for the role. But with slightly less known people, you tend to get cast in what spaces fit you best which are left. It is an honour for me to be included in so many peoples castings- i am not trying to get a particular role, what ive received is an acknowledgment that i am a strong part of the Cats forum.

hope that helps a bit (i also hope it makes sence). Want me to explain anything ive just written a bit better, just ask. Ill keep an eye out here, see how this casting idea is getting on. Good one, Ep-Griz-Reno!
Fantine

Also, I'd like to point out that something like this isn't about:
"Oooh I want to be this and this character,

but that it's about who you are.
audreydarling

Embarassed I'm really sorry if I was misunderstood in my message..I just didn't know what it was about..or how it would work..I was just seeking information..sorry Embarassed so my understanding is to become cast in the forums that you just become active within that forum and the mods will cast you based on how well your personality comes through? Very Happy ..please let me know if that's the right idea..I'm sorry I've never been in a forum cast before!
SapphireNight

nothing to apologise for- i had no idea what it was about to begine with.
Depending on how its done, people compose a list of people theyve cast as each (most) character, submit it to a particular thread (it cats its sticky) and then after a certain time (in cats, after 2 weeks, the thread is locked), the votes are counted, and the castings are determined. To do this, it is fairly complicated, so youll have to ask MsJellicle how the final cast was decided.
It is everyone on the forum who wants to who votes/composes cast lists who do so. its not particurally the mods who do the voting- its your fellow posters here.
The votes are based on your personality, based on your previous posts. theoretically. its basically about how you percieve these peoples personalities based on what you know/remember about their posts- what you feel about them. In iddition, on cats, we usually have a second sticky thread, put up about a fortnight before voting starts. This is to basically ask questions, have mindlessly unusual conversations, but mostly used to post descriptions of yourself, to give additional help to those who want to compose cast lists- it gives you a bit of an advantage.

Only people who say they DONT want to be involved will not be part of this. I will start a thread for this later so don't put it here.

Also, please do not put up a whole load of 'I want to be this character or that character' posts, as then it will turn into an 'audition' type thread. This is NOT that.

Roles will be cast on what people know of you already. For eg if a member is known as a scummy, money grabbing boozer on the board [jk] then the chances are they will be voted as Thenardier. Get it?

This will all come clear soon.

But PLEEEEEEEASE no 'I want this part' posts.

Thanks for you co-operation.
convict24601

Hey Aimee - I'm interested, but I'm not going to be here for a few weeks. Do you think you could cast me anyways? I wouldn't mind any role actually. I will find out when I get back from my vacation.

It's not up to Aimee to cast you, it's everyone else.

Oh no I meant "you" as in the group in general.
Mr_X

Although I guess I could be considered a newbie, I'm really excited for this to see if/what I get cast for.

Now all I need is a personality and I'm in business...
eponine5

*looks at relative post-counts* Am I a newbie? If no-one will cast me as an actual character, I'd be happy to be for example 'whore 3' or even that really annoying old lady in 'Turning' from the previous cast- she's not in the new cast though Crying or Very sad

Do the genders apply to casting?
*glances at Aimee*

Nope. I was the bishop last time. Laughing

I'll do this all tomorrow.
SapphireNight

I think anyone who has made themselves known, and has at least 30 or more posts can be considdered as not being a newbie, in terms of casting.

With cats, genders didnt seem to matter all that much. it was more about the personality, and the gender was more coincedental. Yes, most votes keep to the said gender, but when it comes down to it, youre mostly going on the personalities youve picked up from around the forum. unless specifically told so- or you go hunting out peoples profile pages, youre not really going to know or care if theyre male or felmale (appart from when refering to other people in your posts).
It can often become a little bit confusing sometimes- i was officially cast as one of two main kitten male swing (or main unnamed male kitten), and most people know im female- this was a bit confusing to read...!
Drumdraper wrote:
Like SapphireNight claims the title adult male swing, but she can call herself [...] if she wanted, but it's not mandatory. The swing name she chooses can just be one she likes and then another adult male swing could use the same name as her.

The thing is, its sort of understood. there may be a lot of characters, but they are all individual. there is only one Jean Valjean. if you think a person you know to be female best fits that personality then anyone else, your going to cast her in that role.
MademoiselleMusicals

I would like to be cast in this, just thought I'd post as I haven't posted before in this thread Very Happy
Aimee

I going to lock this one so discussion can stick to the one thread.

Cheers Smile
