Javert's "Stars"

Does anyone have trouble at the end of Stars to hold that fuc*ing long E (or is it an F). Its so annoying I can sing the whole song well but then it gets to "This I swear by the Staaaaaaaaaaaaaars" and my voice suddenly feels as though it's been snatched away from me and it just becomes breathy which causes me to strain and stretch my throat and makes my singing teacher yell at me for "singing like an idiot!!" for stretching. He has transposed it down two tones and makes me sing then does something to it and keeps on changing the transposition to try and make me sing it without knowing what note im hitting, but it still breaks off. I love it when Quast sings it, but not when I do and it pisses me off because I want to perform it.

Edit Aimee. I have copied this into the Les Mis section for you too. Smile

It's a D in the sheetmusic I've seen.

Well, do you have the Les Mis songbook? Because in "Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology" it is a D and that is what it is on the CSR and TAC and '91 Paris recordings, I just checked. The Les Mis songbook changes a few of the keys around ( with that and Bring Him Home...dunno about any others ).
olly

Yep, I have the songbook, not sure which edition though

I performed "Stars" at a high school talent show eight years ago. I can hold the last note. It's not that hard.

How did that go over with everyone?

It helped tremendously.

I went over well. The judges thought I had pitch problems (okay, 1 or 2 bad notes), but they all agreed that I had a unique "star power/presence" when I performed.

The crowd loved it, from what I hear. My mom said she had tears in her eyes when I held the last note.

I arranged the song myself for (pre-recorded) playback. I used an acoustic guitar for the lead instrument and put the strings in the background and used reverse cymbals and kettle drums. I still have the midi file somewhere.

It was fun. But, I'll never perform it again.

Andy.

I'm 99% sure that it's an F in the show, though anthologies and things transpose all over the place. Might be an F# but I think that's another note.
OldDeuteronomy

F# is the correct note
Fogeyman

I've never had any trouble holding that last note. It's a matter of breath control.

Try taking up distance running. That'll help.
robs_oracle

Its a D in the TAC,CSR and two song books which have 'Stars' in them, the F sharp you may be thinking of is the one in suicide. I used to have a problem with it, but my range has increased and is quite easy, i would suggest taking a deep breath though.

Hope to have helped

Reminds me, does anyone know if 'Stars' has been transposed down for Cornell John in the current London cast? Someone told me it had been, but I've not found anyone else saying it yet.
Alie

It has been transposed down a tone (final note is C instead of D) now as far as I'm aware, Moci. Curiously enough, though, he sang it in the original key earlier in his run. Anyone know why they changed it?

If what people who've seen him say is right, probably because he can't hit the notes. Wink

Thanks for confirming that it has been changed. Very Happy

Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Olly...just had a an epiphay about this...he breaths!!! Quast sneaks a breath in. he sings "This is swear by *breath* the stars", a pause which is not in the music, as it is HIS way of singing the number!
The Very Angry Woman

He doesn't breath. Breath is a noun.
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Sorry...my mistake....the word should read Breathe!
olly

Yeah, I noticed that Very Happy . Does anyone have the sheet music to the original orchestration of "Stars". For example, the version Roger Allam sings in the Original London Cast? I would love to have a sing through of that. But I really shocked myself the other day in singing lesson - before the holidays, I found it hard to hit a nice top E (I am a very low bass). However, the first lesson back this term, and I went straight in and hit a strong top F! It was strong (obviously, the challenge is doing it softly). It was cracking a bit, but give it some time, and, who knows! Sorry, the music just reminded me of the lesson Smile
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

I don't know if its avaible anymore olly. Have you tired searching for back dated copies online?
olly

Yeah, everywhere, even eBay... But if anyone has one that they bought earlier?
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Surely it would be possible to write a version (possible not exactly note perfect but cloes) from what already exists? Want me to have a bash as it on sibellius? Let me know.
Aimee

olly, I'm at my fiance's atm but when I get back I will look at my older copy of the score and see what version it is. It SHOULD be the original one but I warn you it wont be easy to read or follow.
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Amiee if you're doing that can i have a copy too? I like the original version too! Thanx in advance!
Aimee

Sure. I'll put it online for short while like the One Day More thing.
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Thank you kindly young lady!
