Have to admit I'm not entirely sure what that means, but this is a topic I've been wanting to discuss for quite some time (forgive me if it's been said before):

Does anyone else think Jean made the wrong choice in revealing himself as an ex-con ?

Continued to lie: Jean is kind of a bad person, Chapmathieu is wrongly imprisoned

Honesty: Jean is a good person with a clean conscience, Chapmathieu is let free, and hundreds of workers lose their jobs when the factory fails
herkind

The hard part of that decision was that it really was a lose-lose situation. There was no easy answer. That part in the novel is so incredibly well written. It's almost agonizing to read because the reader gets the full effect of how hard a decision it was for him to make. Ultimately, I think it was about Jean Valjean wanting to be honest with himself and God.

Good job making him look selfish.

I see it more as a "taking responsibility for his own actions," but who knows. When you help others, you're really just helping yourself Wink

That's an excellent point. You know, I hear every time you do good deeds you're also serving your own needs.

... My thoughts on the matter are this: sorry Chapmathieu, but I am the master of hundreds of workers; they all look to me. Can I abandon them? How will they live if I am not free? If I speak, THEY ARE condemned. If I stay silent I am damned.
