Ali Ewoldt when she took over for Leslie Henstock as Cosette for the second act in a 3rd NT performance.

20. Which performance by a regular lead was the worst you've ever seen?

Susie McMonagle as Fantine. Lovely voice, but she phoned the performance in.

I also wasn't very fond of J.P. Dougherty's Thenardier late in his run. He looked completely bored and sick of the role.

Colm Wilkinson
Frances Ruffelle

None

23. Of all the performances you've seen, in which one were the characterizations generally the closest to the novel?

None
Orestes Fasting

Oh man, how did I forget Aaron Lazar in the "drop it all and go see" category?

Also, Quique, I think you're one of the few other people I know who's seen Pierce Peter Brandt as Javert. I wish I remembered his performance better, because I know he was wonderful.

I saw him as Javert too, but have the same problem about remembering his performance -- I even saw him twice. I'd hate to say he didn't leave an impression.

Could be. I've misplaced my program but that sounds about right. He was Peter Gunther's understudy, and I recall he had very light-colored hair. I was slightly disappointed cause I wanted to see Gunther, but Chris did a fine job, from what I could remember.

As for Pierce, I do remember bits of his Javert. I really liked him. I wrote a review of his performance on here back when I saw him but can't locate it now.
Colle

I updated my quiz to list the performers I have seen.

I saw Pierce as Javert too, he was pretty good though he was suttle. So I can understand why his performance could be difficult to remember.
dcrowley

Quique, how was Jodie Langel as Eponine... I love her from what I can hear, but I have never seen her act. One of my friends is going to be working with her in New York this summer.
Quique

She was wonderful in the role. One of the best I've seen. She played her with a tough edge, which I love.

Btw...a correction: I did not see Norm Lewis as Javert in the revival--it was Robert Hunt.

Not that great but oh well.
lesmisloony

I don't think I ever did this. Also, I'm trying to kill time in class right now, so I don't have any playbills or anything handy, which will probably result in a bit of fail.

1. How many times have you seen Les Mis? seven including Qubec, plus one school edition directed by a certain M. Terrence Mann

2. How many cities have you seen Les Mis in? four

3. In what year did you first see Les Mis? either 1999 or 2000... this show is lost to history, I fear

4. In what year did you see the show the most times? I guess 2008, when I saw it twice in as many days

5. Which was your first cast (principles only)? This is a question I cannot answer. I was ten and the playbill has been lost. It was a tour in North Carolina and it was about ten years ago... the Valjean used falsetto a lot...

6. How many Valjeans have you seen? (I'll assume that the cast I saw in '99 or '00 was a bunch of people I've never seen since, so take that into consideration) six (Mystery Valjean, Randal Keith, Andrew Varela, JOJ, Gemingani, Gino Quilico

7. How many Javerts have you seen? five or six (Mystery Javert, Terry Mann, Tewksbury, Alexandre de Grandpr, Robert Hunt, and... I can't remember who I saw the first time I saw the revival... was there someone between Robert Hunt and Norm? Geez, bad fangirl.)

8. What cast member have you seen more than any other cast member (roles can be combined for this)? James Chip Leonard (played Montparnasse the first time I saw it on Broadway, then played Claquesous or someone like that in one of the tours I saw, then he was all up in the revival... still Claquesous, I think? And he was the bishop.)

9. How many swings have you see play three or more roles? Who are they? Uhhh... does that James Chip Leonard thing count? I saw a lot of... a guy whose last name was Hugo... Dave Hugo?

10. Which cast member(s) did you/would you drop it all to go see? Perhaps JOJ. I also had lots of love for Qubec ponine (Sophie Tremblay) and... oh! That John Jo Flynn! I never saw him, but oh man, I totally would.

11. How many Fantines have you seen? six (Mystery Fantine, Jayne Patterson, Tonya Dixon, Lea Salonga, Judy Kuhn, Genevive Charest)

12. How many pairs of Thnardiers have you seen? Hm. That's a weird way to phrase that. Mystery Thnardiers, Nick Wyman and Aymee Garcia, David McDonald and Cindy Benson, Gary Beach and Ann Hareda, Gary Beach and Jenny Galloway, Jean-Raymond Chles and Kathleen Fortin... so, counting Gary Beach as two people, six

13. How many Marii? Five? Mystery Marius, Kevin Kern, Josh Young, Adam Jacobs, Carl Poliquin

14. How many Cosettes? Six. Mystery Cosette, Sandra Turley, Amanda Huddleston, Ali Ewoldt, Leah Horowitz, Myriam Brousseau

15. How many ponines?
Six again. Mystery ponine, Diana Kaarina, Ma-Anne Dionisio, Marissa McGowna, Megan McGinnis, Sophie Tremblay

16. How many Enjolrases? Six, six. Mystery Enj, Christopher Mark Peterson (for whom I shall always feel love), John-Andrew Clark, Aaron Lazar, Max von Essen, Kevin Houle (scary!)

17. How many people from commercial Les Mis recordings have you seen in the show onstage? Well, excluding the Qubec cast... Terrence Mann, Lea Salonga, Judy Kuhn, and Jenny Galloway. I think that's all... four.

18. Which understudy from any production did you never see in a leading role but wish you had? Um, does it count that I wish I'd seen Celia Keenan Bolger play ponine? Though I guess it's more rare and exciting to have seen Marissa McGowan. I almost wish I'd seen Sarich's Enjolras is a horrible, horrible way.

19. Which performance by an understudy was the best you've ever seen? Marissa McGowan's ponine was very, very good.

20. Which performance by a regular lead was the worst you've ever seen? Gary Beach was so pathetic during the sewers scene, but I seem to remember feeling physical pain every time Terrence Mann was onstage. The legend is that he was sick that day, but... wow. I've never forgiven him for sucking so hard.

21. Which OLC or OBC cast member do you most wish you could have seen live? It would greatly amuse me to see David Burt's Enjolras, but I think maybe... Michael Ball's Marius? Maybe Colm too as I always imagine his performance as standing rigidly before a microphone, looking uncomfortable.

22. How many regional productions have you seen? A school edition and Qubec.

23. Of all the performances you've seen, in which one were the characterizations generally the closest to the novel? Oh my gosh, Qubec. Scary Enjolras, batshit ponine, tough and not too adorable Gavroche, precious Marius/Cosette... PLUS BALD BOSSUET. *says nothing about gay pirate Feuilly*

24. Name any cast members you've seen in one role over 50 times. I'd have to say 0.00

I have a souvenir from the tour in South Carolina in fall 2000 with Ivan Rutherford, Graham Rowat (u/s--I think Stephen Bishop was principal Javert), Joan Almedilla, Diana Kaarina, Stephen Brian Patterson, Stephanie Waters, Stephen Tewksbury, JP Dougherty, Aymee Garcia. Maybe it was an adjacent tour stop?
lesmisloony

I've actually done multiple google searches and things over the years to try to figure out which tour it was, but I always come up with nothing. But I have a vague memory of Madame Thnardier from the tour, and I would be very unsurprised if it had been Aymee Garcia... (though I'm comparing something I saw nine or ten years ago to something I saw six or seven years ago...)
Quique

If it was in 2000, then it had to be the 3rd NT.

If you give me the theatre you saw it at, I might be able to look up the info for you.
lesmisloony

It was at the Greensboro Coliseum. Terrible acoustics, but my mom brought binoculars.

I tried googling it again today and I got some crap about the Jonas Brothers, unfortunately.

12. How many pairs of Thnardiers have you seen? Two, Carlo Boszhard & Marjolein Algera twice and Richard Groenendijk & Kirsten Cools once

19. Which performance by an understudy was the best you've ever seen? Marcel Visscher was great. And definitely better than Dieter Troubleyn.

I guess I'm the GRANDFATHER of Les Mis fandom then (@ 31, no less). XD

I'm the only one who first saw the show in the 80's and also the only one ancient enough to have caught all three national tours.

An addition: I also saw David Michael Felty as Valjean. I forgot about him even though I recall loving his portrayal.
Eppie-Sue

Ah, Quique, those are the reasons why I wish I was older. Going through my list, most of the actors are simply understudies. Which is exciting, too, of course.
