The Duchess of Mint

Lost and found and sexist!

Dear "Les Miserables" Fans,

I personally think that it's extremely sexist for Marius to sing "I am lost!", and for Cosette to sing "I am found!"

Eponine echos those sexist words, too, singing "And when I lose my way, I close my eyes, and he has found me!"

The creators of "Les Mis" were obviously Freudian and sexist, and that is simply exhasperating!

So, we're all to believe that men must lose themselves, and that women must be found...Rolling Eyes

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Marius was lost in his love... and quite literally, all through the Book *and* the musical.

Cosette felt trapped in the garden... and Marius actually, literally *did* find her there. After about a year in the Book.

And... the Book was written in (and the story was set in) the 1800's. Back then, things were just sexist.

That's my take on it.

Well, it does not seem sexist at all too me...
But even if it were sexist I wouldn't care at all. Actually there is nothing I hate more in any kind of historical book, movie, musicals, whatever... that this contemporary-anti-sexist-disney-film-approach where men are women are treated as equal (see: elizabeth swann and any other kind of brave lady fighters, brrrr).
If I go to see a show setted in the early 19th century I expect people to be sexist.

Oh, Duchess, how I disagree.
Marius and Cosette's "I am lost/I am found" is a reflection on their situations in life, not on gender roles. Marius had just seen the love of his life and he could think of nothing else. Cosette, after 10 years or what have you of basically being locked up with not much to do but get cheesed off at Valjean, feels like her "life's begun at last" ... she's got something else, someone else.

As for Eponine ... y'know, she was kind of obsessed. Rolling Eyes

Love,
Cosette
