Joe Valjean

Me Singing Bring Him Home

I have recently played Valjean in a production of Les Miserables in Norwich. I'm 20 and one day would love to play this part in the West End - just wondered what you folks think of it (best backing i could find!)

Just click on the 'Bring Him Home' bit in the player and even add me as a friend or leave a comment if you're on Myspace too...

Enjoy...

Hi Joe, welcome.

Your'e very brave to put it up on a Les Mis site, well done. I'm typing as I listen>>>>>>

Nice tone at start, nice and rich on the lower note and very clear on the top. I like that.

It lacks a bit of support in places, as if you're out of breath. The tempo is a little fast and this might have meant you had to grab your breaths. If you can, try it a bit slower and really support every note, even the quiet ones.

The phrasing is mostly good but occasionally there are oddities for eg... 'bring, [breath] him joy'. He is young, hes [breath] afraid. Do you really need a breath there? And 'You can take, you [breath] can give. If you can't do the whole line, then breath after 'take', not 'you'.

Pitching generally good, the occasional scoop up is fine but the lack of support makes your voice seem flat when the pitch is actually pretty good. Be careful as you go downwards, the very tail end of some long notes drop in pitch and it gets irritating once you notice it. there is one Bring Him home where you slide down to a lower note. I know some Valjeans do this but in your case it made it seem as if you couldn't hold the top note that long. If you're going to do it, you need to do it with a little more finesse.

Diction good but Id like to hear more reverence in it, its a prayer after all. I can hear that youre thinking abut the meaning of the words but if you can work more on his heart then you will improve it no end.

Last note nice but due to fast tempo left me wanting more as it was very short.

All in all great for someone young, well done in the role [when you did it in Norwich] and keep it up. Who knows you may make it to The Queens yet.

Hey. Thanks alot for the reply. i agree with alot of it. This was sung to a backing track so unfortunately i had to sing to that pace which did pose a few problems as it was too fast - unlike in the show where i had a full orchestra to follow me. Glad you liked it (schonbergs son came to watch the show and said he had never seen anyone of my age with a voice that suited that part so well, which was nice!) and hopefully i will be on that Queens stage one day, although i only really do Musicals in my spare time.
olly

Wow! Fantastic! Very well done. As you say, with a backing, inevitably difficult, but excellent!
briggsgirl

it doesn't connect for me Sad

but i will try later.

You're welcome. I hope you stay around here. We're all into musicals in our spare time too. Smile

I agree with what AImee said, and I also agree that you have a wonderful voice!
aidancarr

where did you get your backing track? it's rather nice compared to most other backing tracks (praying it's free).
Fantine

That was highly enjoyable Smile

I do agree with Aimee on the breathing.
broadwaybaby246

Wow, you're very good. Not at all what i was expecting. You have a wonderful voice. You said you only do musicals in your spare time, well it hink you should really get into it because you are very talented.

I bought a CD of backing for the whole show from EBAY for about 12. It has everything that's in the TAC plus a few more.

If you (or anyone) wants a copy, give me an email and let me know.

I hope to be on the West End one day - the only thing is i have a decent job here in sunny Norwich, which makes the decision very hard!

Thanks for all your comments by the way

A joy to listen to, Joe. Thank you very much for sharing with us.
La Carmagnole

That was great. I agree with Aimee re:breathing, but it was still pleasure to hear.
Orestes Fasting

Very nice voice, but agree with Aimee on breathing.

Also, Colm Wilkinson is the only person on earth who can get away with singing like Colm Wilkinson, so try not to mimic him.

Otherwise great though.
Joe Valjean

I have to say i didn't mean to sing it like Colm - although i do a wicked Colm impression (anyone seen his Colm Wilkinson - In Concert DVD, House of the Rising Sun is the stuff of legend!).

I apologise to everyone for starting this 'Me singing...' trend - omg, currently listening to one of the OMO's - ouch!

Thanks to everyone for all your comments, if you bump into Cam Mackintosh at all give him my link Wink
Aimee

No need to apologise. It's fun lisening to people. Smile

Also things go in phases. We've had them before.
paiintmeblue

wow this is really good! i agree about the breathing though.
you do sound a lot like colm, haha.
smokeyspotlight

i think that your voice is quite brilliant. you're obviously too young to play the role of jean val jon but, you wouldn't know it from listening your song. neeeded a bit more support on some of the top notes and maybe need to work on breath control so as to try to sing complete sentences in one breath.
very good though- refreshingly distinctive sound too!!!!!
Joe Valjean

I agree, i've never had any singing lessons or training so am probably lacking some of the technical stuff.

Thanks again for all the comments folks.
MademoiselleMusicals

Joe Valjean you have an amazing voice. Added you on myspace by the way! How do you put your own voice and that on myspace as I'm a singer myself lol The best of luck. Applause

That wasn't very nice.

At least say something constructive.

What an obnoxious thing to say. Where was the constructive critism? I dare you to come up with something.

Look at his join date, and look at his post count. He is obviously one of these idiots who just comes on to stir things up. I remember when we had that person who came on this board and all he did was complain "How shit Les Miserables was". Now, someone doesn't come on a board about the musical and say something like that only if he wants to aggrivate people. Likewise with this person; merely here trying to contradict the constructive, positive comments made.

The one who'd been in Godspell? Or Peachhead?
MademoiselleMusicals

Well I think it is petty and obviously is pathetic. At least say something constructive. This recently happened on a forum (Thestage) where someone was nasty to someone who had helped people since 2004. She eventually left because of people like robs_oracle. Get a life.

Don't worry folks, Rob is a friend of mine, he's trying to be funny!!!
