New Eponine in the Broadway revival

Since nobody here has posted this, I thought I might as well. Celia Keenan-Bolger is going to play Eponine in the Broadway revival, since Lea Michele decided to stay with "Spring Awakening." Here is a link to the press release:

I don't really have an opinion on this, as I didn't know anything about Lea Michelle so it didn't really make an impact on me that she dropped out. I'm not really one to judge Celia Keenan-Bolger either as I haven't seen her act or heard her sing. All I can say is that she doesn't look much like Eponine (IMHO).

Anybody can look like Eponine. Just go live in the woods for a few weeks. You'll be dirty, starving, thin, tan, unclean, sickly, missing a few teeth... then dye your hair brown if nessicry.
Lazarus (Adam G)

I think she does 'look' like Eponine.

She's got a very rough face; not really a looker. Eponine isn't supposed to be pretty.
Meliara

Celia's got a GORGEOUS voice. Check out "25th Annual....Spelling Bee," in particular the "I Love You Song." She's got quite a range, and isn't whiney.

Accutally, she should look somewhat pretty. In the book at one point, Victor Hugo was discribing everything ugly about her then added "but even through this she was beautiful. Ah, youth!" or something to that effect. (I'll edit my post and site this as soon as I can find it in the book)
And she was deffinatally pretty as a child.

I've always thought of Eponine as... as a beautiful girl... that got hit by a truck with muddy tires, and then maybe it backed up a couple times....

Agreed. Celia is attractive, but not in a traditional way -- and it's nice to not have someone completely beautiful in the role. I think Lea Michele had a similar look (not that she looks like Celia) in that she's attractive but not gorgeous.

I dunno if you've anyone posted this yet but the upcoming production is actually a revival of the musical, not a stage production of the book. Just thought I'd share Wink

Of note:

EPONINE: Late Teens - Early 20s. Daughter of the Thenardiers. Very pretty. Fired by an unrequited love for MARIUS. Heartbreaking waif with an enormous and beautiful belt voice (to C in chest, sings to E flat) .

However, it's always nice to be accurate to the book, when possible.

My thoughts, too. I've never liked overly pretty Eponine's...which is pretty much every girl who has played the role. I wish they'd make her more like the book, an ugly girl who you could see was pretty ONCE. Casting a beautiful young woman and then just putting a bit of black make up on her face doesn't really convince me.
Orestes Fasting

I've always seen Eponine as someone who is still pretty--or at least would be if you washed off several layers of grime, combed her hair, gave her a few weeks of square meals and some decent clothes, and did something about the missing teeth.

Or even someone whom several layers of grime, rags, matted hair, etc. couldn't actually make ugly, just rather filthy and insane. Which is enough to make her undesirable even if she is still pretty underneath it all.

It would be so funny if in the revival they blacked out some of Eponine's teeth...that would really be something for the Eppieboppers to think about.
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

When we did the SE i think thats one of the more sucessful things we did. We blacked out some of Eponine's teeth. Made her seem hideious. The girl who played her was "plain" but evdiently had good looks. It was just the usual black marks on the face were pretty rubbish!

I'm well aware. Its just... Plays/musicals based on books, when not a direct interpretation of the book, should still stay as close to the book as the script allows.... or thats my opinion, at least.

Haha, yes! It should be really obvious, like one of her front teeth and her canines.

I found a youtube video of Celia singing the "I Love You" song. I'll post the link, I hope I don't get into trouble:

Celia, I am pretty sure, is the one in the middle. She does have a strong voice, I think she should do well.
javertsw

Thing is, unless your sitting in the front rows of the stalls, you can hardly see her face anyway- so it hardly matters how pretty or ugly she is.
EponinesRain

She's pretty good! Her voice reminds me of Sutton Foster's, higher than some of the previous 'Ponines we've heard. It certainly adds to the urchin-like naivete that is intended of her character. I could totally invision her as Eponine.

Aw, man. Now I want to go see the revival even more! Somebody stuff me into his/her luggage and slip me in! Laughing
piscesmoni

The lady's got immense amount of talent; I have great confidence in her that she will pull it off wonderfully.
eponine5

I like her voice! It's strong, but also slightly husky. A good Eponine voice, in my opinion!

Well I don't like that Celia K-B has short hair. To be realistic, Eponine should have long hair. But, also, short hair wouldn't look right with the newsboy cap. What do you think? Would an Eponine look OK with short hair?

Since when does Celia Keenan-Bolger have short hair? Olive Ostrovsky has pigtails; you can't easily pigtail short hair. Find me a picture.

I saw Melissa Lyons as an understudy when she still had hair that barely reached her shoulders. It didn't bother me, and really, Eponine's hair is not a major concern.
eponine5

The actress' actual hair is not a problem. If it is too short, she can just wear a wig. You don't think that the actress playing Fantine cuts her hair and then regrows it every night do you? Wink
It's normal for the majority of the cast to wear wigs. I know that, at least near the end of her time as Eponine, Shonagh Daly had fairly short hair, and she just wore a longer wig.
Colle

While we are on the subject of wigs, I don't think I have seen an Eponine with a wig or at least I could not tell if she was wearing a wig. Melissa Lyons, Ma-Anne Dionisio, and Rona Figueroa all seemed like their hair were long enough not to need a wig, though in Rona's headshot she had short hair.

Ah, the beauty of costuming.
eponine5

Yeah, I was really convinced that Shonagh Daly wasn't wearing a wig...until she came out of the Stage Door with much shorter hair. I really don't know whether any other Eponines wore wigs though.
Fantine

I think Sophia Ragavelas wore a wig.
Meliara

Here are some GLAM pics of Celia from the Tony Awards when she was nominated. So she can be very pretty.

And I thought this one was cute; =)

It's very rare for American Eponines to wear one, though. I can't think of one in the past 10 years who's had hair so short she's been wigged. But they may go in a different direction with the revival.
digitalxdoll

Yeah i am pretty sure Sophia wore one (her hair quite quite short at the time - maybe thats why?) and Gemma Wardle too.
