Fantine

Now you are here... again... beside me

One could argue that Valjean sings this to Cosette because they are finally reunited. However, I like to think that he sings it to Fantine. She comes to him to take him to Heaven with her and he is finally blessed. What do you think?

I've never really thought of it like that.

Would your interpretation make sense though, because that line comes right after Cosette comes in? Seeing as he loves Cosette so much, it'd be really weird for her to show up and him just singing to Fantine.
kittengoespop

Dual meaning, oooooooo......

This had never occurred to me, either, but it would probably mean both of them.

Well yeah, but it would make sense for him to sing it to Fantine as well because he hasn't seen her in 10 years and she descends to him from Heaven. He sees her again and realises that she's come from heaven to take him away and he decides that he must be blessed.
See?

I'm pretty sure it's directed toward Cosette.

But interesting observation, nonetheless.
Fantine

The TAC actually hints at him singing it towards Fantine because the camera angle shows only him and her looking at him.

(although that is probably "just" the camera angle)

Wink

It's how I got the idea.

Agreed. But yes, interesting thought! I wonder if Fantine really meant so much to Valjean though. Cosette grew on him, certainly enough, but was Fantine more of just a guilt trip to him? A sort of duty he had to do so that he wouldn't have to live with what he had done to her? One wonders if she meant more to him or not...

I see his singing as being directed to 'someone who comes to take him to heaven'.

I do think that he meant a lot to Fantine because he was the first gentle man she had ever known. He helped her and he "raised her child with love". I do believe she cared for him. Especially after watching him from heaven and seeing him for the man he truly was.

And then she hits a low D. Which is pretty insane and awesome and makes me envy altos.

I know! When I try to do that note it osunds all growly and "Urgh"
curlyhairedsoprano91

That note kills me. Some days I hit it, and some days it comes out like a growl. And some days I can't even hit the F above that. My low range is so erratic. Which is weird, 'cause my high range used to be erratic and top out at a Bb5, and my low range was steady at a Gb3. And now my top range is steady at an F6 and my low range is nonexistant/an enigma.

Smile Perhaps I'll post someday, if I ever get around to recording something. BTW, Fantine, perhaps I forgot to post this on one of your threads ... but your voice is chocolate. And that is good.

Oh, yeah. I believe Fantine cared about Valjean, I'm speaking of the other way around. Whether he actually cared for her as a friend, or if he was just clearing his guilt by helping Cosette.

Yeah I understood what you were saying.

He doesn't see her as a friend though, he just feels immense pity for her. And he does feel guilty so he swears to protect Cosette no matter what.
music is my life!!!

i think it's an E flat. it's in Fsharp major/Eb minor and it goes down there... looooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....

when i saw it in london (May '07) Fantine just stayed on the note before the super low note for "will be with"

after all that belting, i'm surprised more fantines don't do that...
