Really? Because in so many fandoms I've perused it seems like that's the main reason. I've not found a lot of fics that are just about exploring the story but about putting characters together in romantic relationships no matter how weird they are.

It depends on what fandom you're in and on what fanfic site you use. If we take the Harry Potter example, if you go on fanfic.net (I believe that's the site, I gave up fanfic a while ago so I'm not quite sure) you'll see a lot of weird pairings just going for the shock value. However if you go on, for example, mugglenet fanfiction (PM EponineMNFF for more detail) you'll see more fics focusing on the plot rather than unlikely pairs. However, I've noticed in the Les Mis fanfic community (maybe because the plot is so tight and thorough) most fanfics tend to be on weird pairings.

If there were, do you think there would even be a debate over whether Enjolras/Grantaire is what Hugo intended? Laughing No, no open declarations of sodomite intent--but the reconciliation scene in question is one of the more powerful scenes in the book, and I don't want to spoil it.

I know this is a double post, and from way back, but that scene made me weep when I read it. I was on a bus surrounded by all these sweaty and smelly people from my school, none of whom I was particurally fond of, and to them, I was crying for no reason on the way back home from a fantastic school trip. It was pretty awkward.

If I could change any part of the musical, I would cut some of the details in the Fantine section (runaway cart for one... it's very important in the book but pointless in the musical) then change Enjolras and Grantaire's death scene to mimic the one in the book.

Does it really matter? If you don't like those types of stories, then don't read them.

But that doesn't mean you should spend your time insulting them.

That's all I have to say.
