Welcome!

(Can you fix the French in your sig? "Vous ne savez rien de Javert" and "Vive le French Toast"? Sorry, I'm nitpicky... and someone else might come through and correct my French, but that's acceptable.)
sitarchlescaptress

Thankee kindly! *bows* Very Happy Sorry about the French. *grins sheepishly* I used a translator and those things don't always come out the right way. Thanks for the correction!

In the French lyrics it's "Tu ne sais rien de Javert."

And I try to stay away from this thread because it scares me. In the bad way.
Brunnhilde

Orestes: the Inspector was mad, as Valjean kindly said. *stalks to kill Valjean for this*
So don't wonder if his topic is scaring. Twisted Evil

YKYAOWJW:

You spent half a day with Sythar, playing a "Javvie & Vidocq talk" RP.

You use to keep Javvie in tormented mode.
Orestes Fasting

Javert might have been mad by the end, but that madness didn't extend to treating a police inspector like some sort of anime bishounen. ("Javvie?" Really? I think I'm about to vomit.)

Hehe That works to. Very Happy Salright! I'm sure if I new French I would be the same way. Laughing

You watch the TAC and pause it whenever you see the faintest glimpse of Philip Quast in the background and have memorized his every move.

Your family knows all of Javert's songs because you constantly sing them at the top of your lungs....to their great annoyance. Dancing Mr. Green
curlyhairedsoprano91

Haha, I agree with Orestes a little bit. I read the thread for amusement ... but "Javvie" has inadvertently traipsed into the realm of "OMG WTF?"
Brunnhilde

Orestes: then don't call Enjolras Enjy, dearie. And don't make poor virgin screw with 'Ferre. Oh, and blame EVERYBODY who says Javvie, not just me.

Hlye picsa.

And besides, first I hated the thought to give a nickname to the Inspector, but I hear it too often. And he's not treated like a *beep* anime bishie.
Hey, Javvie is still better than Snookums. *facedesk*
Bramblefox

^^Ah yes, the infamous 'Snookums'. Believe it or not, I found a person with the last name of 'Snook' who played Javert. Talk about weird.

YKYOWJW:

Actually, I have to say Applause to that. Just calm down, everybody! No one's actually going to force Javert to wear a tutu and dance for their amusement! We're all intelligent people here and we all know what Javert is really like. Seriously, what would a fandom be without fangirls screaming about wanted to cuddle a character who isn't the cuddling type? *points to own banner*

Honestly, we've all seen "Javvie" used before. This thread isn't exactly groundbreaking.
Brunnhilde

I think the Inspector would arrest all fangirls. Laughing And Enjolras would use the Glare o' Death on them. Poor heroes. They are lucky they are dead. Twisted Evil

Sometimes I wonder why doesn't have, for example, Thnardier fangirls? Or silly nicknames? He's so underrated, poor greedy rat.
curlyhairedsoprano91

Thenardier has no fangirls because he has no attractive qualities. Simple as that. Smile But seriously ... it's why Valjean has fewer fangirls, as well. I <3 Valjean but it's harder to fangirl a semi-saintly old man.

I'll believe that when I see some evidence of it.

And no, melodramatic posts about how Hugo was omg wrong for not making Valjean throw himself into the Seine after his dead gay lover don't count as evidence.

P.S. When the f**k was I ever in the habit of calling Enjolras 'Enjy'?

YKYOWJW

You respect and fangirl him for his qualities, and not hold him to your own cutesy-slashy-poor-baby vision or to the exagerated fandom-sterotype that seems to be running rampant on this thread.

I can understand the initial response of wanting to cuddle your literary crush, but after a while, shouldn't it evolve into a more intellectual interest in the character, not just their nightstick-of-doom or sideburns or trench coat?

Oh - and I'm certainly aware of Javert's literary qualities. I am honestly a little bewildered at being considered rabid and really annoying. Shocked
SylvieProuvaire

If this thread on this forum were the only place, it would be one thing and I wouldn't complain, becase honestly? I know I don't have to click in this thread, but it's getting to feel like for me that most of the posts I've been reading lately on the forums I visit are about Javert and include this guy: Twisted Evil, even on unrelated threads and it's just been getting frustrating

I'm sorry. I don't speak Hungarian, and I don't know what this means.
curlyhairedsoprano91

Brunnhilde wrote:

Exactly. Speaking from personal opinion, Javert is not an "attractive" character, per se ... he is one, however, who has been played by many a very attractive actor. Therein lies the source of much of the fangirling, I think. It's not so much "OMG Javert so cute and cuddly" as the attractive aura exuded by the certain caste of "Javert actors." However, since it's not one particular actor that strikes the fancy, but the subgroup as a whole, it manifests itself as an adoration of the character.

Brunnhilde wrote:
And I think, after 10+ years respect and be scared of Javert (when I knew only the book), I have right to adore him at last.
Yup. If the fangirling only began after the musical, it seems not unlikely that it's rooted in what I said earlier ...

EDIT: I don't mean to say that nobody is attracted to or fangirls Javert solely based on the merits of his character in the book and the musical. I'm sure there are those of you here who are and do. I was simply going off my own opinions and Brunnhilde's post.
Brunnhilde

Soprano: finally somebody got it. *hug*

I never thought Javert can be attractive, till I saw TAC. As a child I found him frightening. I realized he was not evil, just... wrong all the time. And cold and cruel. Later I began to understand him, but love came only with Philip. Now I totally love him in the book, having badass lines and being cool in general.
I'm not fond of "beautiful" men (only Dmitri Hvorostovsky... but he is an angel), I prefer men who are tough guys, talk in cool lines (and talk few), ride, don't fear death and draw faster than any other. *hugs said heroes, and gives a kiss to Silenzio, because she loves poor mute assassin*

Sylvie, there are words in Hungarian what just can't be translated into English without loss.

Besides, what makes me different from any other Javert fan. I DON'T WANT him alive! I hate rescuing fics. It's his death what makes him a great character, and his final breakdown what makes him human.
SylvieProuvaire

It's not about whether you find Javert attractive or whatever. Sure, Javert is a cool character. And, sure, it's fine to like an attractive actor playing a character who isn't traditionally attractive. I don't mind people thinking what they want, but it's more the maturity level that bothers me.

Seriously, if someone else were acting like this over Eponine instead of Javert, you yourself would probably find it slightly annoying.

"And incidentally megbaszhatod the whore anydat the redheaded French picsval together."

...since this is all that came out when I attempted to use an online translator, which can be very inaccurate, I'm delaying being somewhat offended and asking you politely what it means.
lesmisloony

1. Saying things in another language that could be offensive and then refusing to even attempt to translate is bad form.
2. If one more person comes into this thread and tries to pick a fight I, not a Javert fan in the slightest but still protective of the right to be a silly fangirl, will go batshitcrazy, bust out Stabby McStabenstein, and kill you all. However, I do see the point that there have been a lot of weird Javert lustings in unrelated threads lately. But this is the place where that's okay, so back off.
3. Why are you people taking this thread seriously?

*scowls*
Brunnhilde

Because we were having fun here with a few fans before certain people came to attack us with all hatred.

Heh? This thread was made for fun. Some of you remind me to right-winged Hungarian policticians. Who are scary. Believe me, you don't want to know how scary.

Okay then, another word against Javert or anyone "I'm knowing-better" and I'll send them to bloody hell in English.
Orestes Fasting

*cheers Sylvie on*

If y'all let your gooshy fangirlishness spill out into the rest of the forum, why shouldn't we let our annoyance spill over into here?

And there is a difference between being an intelligent poster who allows herself a bit of silliness sometimes, and being an obnoxious immature fangirl all the time.
SylvieProuvaire

First, Lesmisloony, my point is pretty much what Orestes said. I'm not trying to pick a fight; I'm just a bit fed up at this point. And I think I've been as polite as I can on the subject.

...Please don't send Stabby to kill me. D:

Second, Brunnhilde
Quote:

You are totally overreacting. Hatred, what? I've been trying really hard to edit my posts to keep them at least somewhat polite. And the thing is, it's not just here in this thread. If it was, then I just wouldn't read this thread, like I said.

Quote:
Heh? This thread was made for fun. Some of you remind me to right-winged Hungarian policticians. Who are scary. Believe me, you don't want to know how scary.

Sure, have fun on this thread. It just seemed to me like this was best place to address the spillage onto unnrelated threads since this seems to be where the madness originates.

And just so you know, I'm pretty liberal. I'm not trying to 'censor' anyone. So it seems pretty bogus that you are saying because I'm complaining that you've been spilling into unrelated threads about how much you adore Javert, that I am in any way similar to a scary right-wing politician.

Quote:
Okay then, another word against Javert or anyone "I'm knowing-better" and I'll send them to bloody hell in English.

I haven't said a word against Javert. Not one word.

And before you get so angry about 3 of my posts, try to think of what it's like, checking a favorite forum and only finding dozens of inane posts about Javert-lust and what-have-you. Because that's what we've been dealing with for a couple of months now.

And you know, you still haven't translated the Hungarian.

Thirdly, thank-you, Orestes.
Quique

Yeah, this situation is sort difficult to address because a.) It really isn't THAT big of a deal to begin with b.) There's no way of addressing it without coming off somewhat bitchy c.) Though it's not a huge deal, the outrageous fangirlishness is sort of off-putting. Makes me wonder why I haven't posted here as much as I used to.

And this is coming from someone who's posts are usually a bit on the weird, erratic side, lol. I don't really enjoy coming across so many posts that hammer one's erotic love for ANY character into my head every day. It was cute and actually quite amusing at first, but then it just gets creepy and overbearing. Had it been more sporadic, this thread wouldn't have degenerated to what it has. Just my 2 cents. Now let's all kiss and make up. Mr. Green
bigR

What really worries me is:
are they really people out there who get actually offended when someone else bashes their favourite fictional characters?

And I really want to emphasize the word "FICTIONAL".
lesmisloony

^ Well, yeah, of course there are.

*puts Stabby away*

Like I said, yeah, it's true that the "spillage" is frustrating... so I guess, being that I equally see both points but don't see how to help end the madness, I shall now sneak away from this argument.

Except when people take it seriously. Then it stops being funny and starts being obnoxious.

(Incidentally, Sieglinde, did you think everyone here is incapable of using a dictionary? It's not that hard to find out that the reason what you said wouldn't translate well to English is because it contained at least three equivalents of the f-word.)

Funny... and rude at the same time.
PqA

EPONINE!!!!1111!

I love eponine. She is the best character in the world!!! She is so funny and smart and I totally get her. I also love her songs in the musical. I can sing them really well, even though I'm a guy, and I learned ALL of her songs on piano, even though I can't read sheet music and that was the first time I'd ever played piano coz we don't have a piano coz I can't afford a piano. [/endpointproving]

Really, guys that's all we're fighting about here. It's rather silly. It seems that group one wants to express their love for Javert without persecution (Or is it prosecution... or maybe it's percussion. XD) and that group two doesn't want the entire forum cluttered with "OMG... JAVVIE!!!! *faints*." Because, as you saw, it only takes one post to really get annoying.

Neither of those seem like too much to ask. No one is being hateful to anyone, and if things stay in their proper place then it shouldn't be a problem. Just don't put something where it doesn't belong. (We learned that at around the age of 4, I'm thinking.) Really. Some of you are acting like this is the Continental Congress, or a human rights discussion. If you feel that passionate about it, then just do what you should. (Besides, much more of this and it'll get closed down by somebody, like all the other threads where people can't figure out when to stop-- and we wouldn't want that, would we, Javert lovers.)

Very classy, Sieglinde. You just cussed out a teenager in a language they don't understand! What a fantastic way to refute your argument and to boost your own self esteem!

Online translators don't usually refuse to process curse words--I think the problem might be that Hungarian is a highly inflected language. I had to play around with chopping off the ends of words to get dictionary entries.

So Brunnhilde, help a language n00b out--am I the redheaded French expletive being referred to, or is that phrase being used in some other way?

Don't know what explective is, but the word you mean is a phrase on women what English doesn't use as I see. It is something like "hussy" but not exactly.

YKYAOWJW:

You get angry when fellow citizens say you're too obsessed. God, I began to be as ill as my poor friend Nina - although she was obsessed with a Russian singer, for ten years. Now she hates him. I made her a Mizzie - now she likes Christian Mller.

Honestly, did I obsess him in other topics? I didn't even notice. But I fear when I just mention his name everyone says it's obsession. I need cure, or I just need to go and get another version of the Ring, to get a little out of this fandom.
Orestes Fasting

No, do go ahead and give us a rough translation of the whole sentence. I won't deduct points if it doesn't capture the lovely nuance of Hungarian cuss words. Although I do wonder what on earth made you think it's okay to call another poster a f**king hussy and hope she doesn't understand what you just said.

And since you didn't seem to understand the first, second, or third times, I'll say it again: nobody is hating on Javert. Nobody is telling anybody not to be obsessive. A lot of people are pretty fed up with having their forums spammed by idiotic posts about how much you lust after the woobiefied bishounen Javert you've created in your head.

The thing is that you never outright call him any of that, but you imply it like crazy. I mean, even when it's things like calling him Snookums and Javvie more than Javert in conversations.

You said this on Abaisse. Not about Javert, but it would seem to undermine your argument about hating bishies.

Quote:

How dare you say something like that? The way you've been parading how much you adore Javert is 10x beyond what is appropriate, and enough to make anyone dislike Javert, makes you incredibly hypocritical!

Marianne doesn't post the way you do. She talks about Enjolras, because he's oe of her favorite character, yes, but when it's appropriate. And when she does, it's NOT about 'teh red vest' or call him Enjy or talk about how cute he and Grantaire would be, which is the equivelent of what you're doing with Javert.

Besides, Marianne does so much for this fandom in terms of translating lyrics and doing research, but you? You don't do anything else besides go on and on about Javert, and things that aren't even related to the fandom.

Are you implying that hell is for people who don't love Valjean/Javert pairing or it's full of such pairings? Because either way you slice that bread, that's kinda pretty f*cked up.

And it is pretty hypocritical to even attack other people when you're spewing insults that can get you automatically banned in a foreign language, and refuse to translate it until the people you are insulting calls you out on it.

I think she understands perfectly; she's just spewing any insult or argument she can think of in the hopes that some of them will stick. Or maybe she just assumes that everyone thinks the way she does--that if you dislike someone you automatically hate their favorite character, and that liking a character involves squealing over how hawt he is and calling him diminutive nicknames.

Okay then, plase, quote me WHEN did I say he's a bishounen or woobie-what.

Do you want me to drag up that thread on Abaiss where you were talking about Javert and the other policemen acting like teenage girls in the cafeteria? Because I'd be happy to do so if the admin hasn't deleted it out of sheer disgust.

Edit: I hope it won't disappear now.

Maybe you should have thought of that before you said it in the first place.
Quique

The posts didn't make me hate Javert either, but they did give me the heebie jeebies due to creepiness factor. I mean, how many times can one take banners that imply Javert and Valjean screw each other in the tush? Awwwwwwkward.
SylvieProuvaire

My point isn't that her posts make people dislike Javert; it's that if she acts that way about Javert, how can she blame Marianne for making her hate Enjolras.

But don't you see, I oppressed her on the internet. Now she's going to have nightmares about the Enjolras in my avatar being meeeean to her, so she's going to hate him forevermore--and it will be all my fault that my darling pwecious Enjy is subjected to the ire of somebody who already called me a redheaded French tart.

Sarcasm aside, out of all the people on the forum, Sylvie is probably the least deserving of getting cussed out like that. She's kept a civil tongue in her head this whole thread when nobody would have blamed her for exploding, and frankly anyone that polite has got serious guts for staying in a thread this crazy.
bigR

I'm probably being redundant but I want to insist on the fact that Javert (or Cosette or Bamatabois, ot the second whore on the left) are all fictional characters.

I like to think that I have a lot of imagination, and I love roleplaying games, and I can spend even more time that our dear ponine living inside my head, so I have no trouble understanding how at some point anyone may develop feelings for fictional characters.

But I insist: even if you have feelings for them, "they" don't have feelings, because they don't exist. There is no need to take the defense of any character from the Brick as if he was a member of your family or a close friend
The notion that someone can feel offended (and not in a playful way, but really offended) because someone else hates/critizices/insults a fictional character really creeps me out.

Seriously, I think that there is a line that defines sanity between

a) taking the side of a character in an intelligent or funny discussion, because it is interesting or because you love a book, and it is nice to discuss the character's actions, or make jokes about them, critizise the characters you dislike, and

b) hating/insulting real people because they say things that you don't like about your favourite characters.
Bramblefox

Excellent point, bigR. People, can we please just quit fussing like a bunch of toddlers and get over it?? (to quote my dad: 'can't we all just get along??') Honestly, there are some members who are blowing what they perceive as character-bashing WAY out of proportion. Think of it this way: the characters themselves probably would totally ignore these 'insults', so why get all upset 'for' them? It's really not that big of a deal. We all need to get thicker skin and to stop being children about this.
SylvieProuvaire

*gestures to third to last post* Hey, thanks, Marianne! Smile

Also, Bramblefox, I really have to say that Javert is a great name for a German Sheperd. Smile

Sylvie, I like your way of viewing things, and I thank you for trying to keep the peace, so to speak, around here. I also thank (god, I sound like a politian giving a speech!) everyone else for being nice. Smile

You know you're obsessed with Javert when...

1)You have to scour the web to find fics/fanart, because you've read/looked at all the stuff in the public places. (Guilty!)
2)You had a three month infatuation with POTO, and your parents are terrified that instead of wanting to don a cape and mask and become a hermit, you'll want to dress up in your dad's trench coat and go on patrol.
lesmisloony

Welcome to the board, Sarchale! Don't worry, it's not usually like... that...

I'm a relative n00b at this fandom.... What was the importance of the pictures of the two guys? Embarassed
Mistress

Not much...somehow it got to the topic of Aaaron Lalzar, a fan favourite Enjorlas...the second guy just happened to be the pics w/him...he's a well-known Valjean.

Don't worry, I've been on the Les Mis forum for about a year, and I'm still a n00b with much of this stuff....

Aaron Lazar as Enjolras and Drew Sarich as Grantaire were known for onstage interactions that looked... not entirely straight, shall we say.

I seeeee............

Oh, and don't worry. I'm perfectly cray. 8D

Sorry for the double post, but I just wanted to point out that my keyboard is being rebelious and not typing in the letter that sounds like a mixture of 's' and 'e'. Wow, that was a long run-on sentence.

The only Les Mis character I can draw without a ref pic is Javert.

And... I WISH I COULD PLAY HIM.... BUT I'M FEMALE. (Bah, that didn't stop revival!Pirelli...)

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Pics comin' right up: http://picasaweb.google.com/molly.nolden/JavertLeChien?authkey=xRGIUnWPIQs#5259571213756851122

He's a German Shepherd/Lab mix, and his head looks very much like a lab. But he's still little so it's kinda hard to tell at this point...

I would very much love to dress the dog up like his namesake, but...hmm...*is getting ideas*

And the Javert-costume pour moi: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/ErikandMia/099-1.jpg

I really like this picture, I think that I look like an assassin here. The only thing I am missing at this point is a top hat, which I was supposed to get yesterday, but I couldn't find a costume shop. Crying or Very sad

-You watch Philip Quast sing Javert instead of doing your homework.
-You claw at your computer screen when PQ does something sexy (like breathing hard after singing Stars)
-You look for sites and forums online like these to confirm you are not alone
-You skip ahead in the book until there is a part with Javert
-You read Javert fanfiction and criticize the pairing (among everything else)
