I always thought he was in his mid- to late-thrities in the beginning. Confused

XD LOL

...
OMG, If this does happen... NPH SHOULD be in it. : DDDDDDD

No joke, NPH would be excellent, in my opinion. Perhaps for a different role, but he really could pull something in Les Miz off.
Mistress

I thought he was in his late 30's too
bigR

He is 40 in 1815
lizavert

Sorry about this bigR, but I'm going to have to correct you.

Javert was 52 in 1832, which would make him 43 in 1823 and 35 in 1815.

In short, Jackman is just about right, age wise.
Monsieur D'Arque

Does Jackman sing low enough for Javert though? He's more of a Valjean based on voice alone.
Colle

I am not sure what role Hugh Jackson would be a better fit for, either Valjean or Javert. I think it is around the right age for either. Physically, he seems like he could be a Valjean(we're talking about the man who plays Wolverine in the X-men movies), I am not sure vocally.

Keep in mind, though, that in many (if not most) movie musicals, keys are transposed to a more "speechy" range. Think of the "Fiddler on the Roof" movie and the "Camelot" movie ... movie!Javert may not have to hit a low F, and movie!Valjean may not have to hit high B.

In terms of type, Jackman is very Valjean, in my opinion.
Monsieur D'Arque

Listening to Jackman's Oscar-Nominated Movie Medley, the two things that keep coming to mind are "Australian Valjean" and "Gay Colm Wilkinson." Epic, but rather camp at the same time.

Patrick Harris is too American. I don't think he can do a continenal role.
Colle

I can understand why some would think Neil Patrick Harris is "too American," though I could see him as one of the Thenardier gang members in "Les Miserables," in some production, not nesssarily in the movie.

Out of curiousity, Monseiur D'Auque, what made you think of Jason Segel and Neil Patrick Harris as Babet and Montparnasse? Was it just because they did a version of "Confrontation?" I do think Neil might have the right look for Parnasse, though I have to ask the expert, Lesmislooney, about that.
Monsieur D'Arque

The two of them are both well-versed in musical theatre- Harris as a performer, Segel as a writer of musicals in the FunRaku style of theatre. They also are both huge fans of Les Miserables, and would fit well playing two of the smallest, almost comic-relief, parts.

I'm sorry to have touched off the debate, but I didn't actually mean that Javert was in his 30s at the beginning of the show. I was merely making a point that Jackman can play the whole range of ages that Javert goes through in the show.
Colle

Yes, it is kind of funny, Monsieur D'Arque, the Thenardier gang are supposed to be these great criminal underworld bosses yet they get scared by a girl.
Bianco

If we are going to cast Jackman, I'd much rather see him as Javert than as Valjean. Javert is a complicated character, who needs an actor who is capable of expressing a range of (restricted) emotions, whereas Valjean is fairly straightforward person (not quite finding the right words here, don't kill me). I'd imagine Jackman to be capable of playing a believable Javert. I'm a fan of Alan Rickman, but wouldn't like to see him in Javert's role, mainly due to reasons expressed in page 12 of this topic. Besides, Javert is an important and dear character to me, and I wouldn't like him to became yet another villain-played-by-Alan-Rickman.

The students I'd love to see being played by actors who actually are in their early to mid-twenties. Then they could use their hot-sexy-teenage-idol-quota there, and we could have actually competent actors in the main roles, thus avoiding the faith of the disaster that was POTO the Movie.

I've just come from the Social Forum thread that included the clip of Reprise's The Fantasticks, starring Eric McCormack as El Gallo. I hereby submit his name as a potential Javert. ... Don't think of him as Will from Will & Grace. Watch the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BbYQzVkvaA

I dunno. Something about it just made me go ... "Huh. Javert!"
