POSH!?

Upon recently attending a cxoncert i galnced down at the programme and saw that the artists were perfoming slections from Les Mis....i was really excited.

However i was bitterly disappointed. Initally they sang ATEOTD with sounded quite good considering there was only 8 of them, then the first solo. IDAD...
She breathed half way through "shaaaaaaaaaaame" *tut* i was disgusted. I nearly got up and slapped her. All went well from then on, the boke doing JVJ sang a very moving "Bring Him Home" and then "One Day More" began.

This song was where i had my major problem. It all began well...a friend of mine repeated her role as eponine and got just the right level of bitterness and dispare. JVJ was sterling again and Marius and Cossette kept dirfting on each others part. but this wasn't really THAT noticable. Enjolras and Javert were okay although i wouldn't have followed the Enjolras to my death. Javert was about as scary as a lettuce, but he sang it well. THEN disaster the Thenariders sang. They sang with PSOH upper class accents, singing highly accuratly and their internation and pronunciation was verey accurate! "Watch them run amock, Catch them as they fall. Never know your luck when there is a free for all" No kidding i had to be held down or i would have stormed the stage.

I'm all for originality of character, but the whole point is that they are supposed to be lower class. i couldn't get around it. I just wanted them to sing possibly a little less posh and just a little rougher. I mean fine pronuncation is one thing but a little rouighness would have made a huge difference. It was like listrening to a choir singing it!...i was disgusted. What do other people think? Would it work or not?

If it was a concert, I would usually excuse people for not singing completely in character, but since it sounds like all the other characters did fine...
I personally would feel the same way, especially about characters like the Thenardiers. With a musical like Les Mis, I consider it more important that the actors show emotion and character than try to show off their voices.
In London at least, it's a trademark of the Thenardiers that they have unposh, cockney accents.

What were the accents like in At the End of the Day?

As usual...rough and providing depth and emotion.
