Question

I just was in Lillestm(Norway) seing Les Mis. There's something that confuse me. At the barricade, les amis were shot. Only Enjolras and Marius are left. Then Marius too get shot, and I think Enjolras reacted a bit weird. He shouted and threw himself down at Marius' side, and was obviously very emotional. And that prompted the wayving of his flag. I'm almost sure that didn't happend in the other show i saw in Trondheim, where it just was prompted by the general death of all his friends, not just Marius . Why would Enjolras react that way? I don't have the impression of him and Marius being so close. Was it just because Marius was the very last to get shot? Any thoughts? (and I'm certain it was Marius, and not Combeferre or someone else. Valjean clearly picked him up right after.)

I think its because Marius is the youngest. And because of that Enjy feels a need to look after him. I dunno, I could be wrong...but thats how I took it. Very Happy

I think it's things like this that prompt the "what side DOES Enjy butter his toast on?" Think

Haha, I think the book is even more responsible for that. "Enjolras? Chaste for the revolution, yo. But really, girlishly pretty. And never looked at women. And by the way, even though I insist he never boffed anybody, let me go compare him and Grantaire to six million pairs of classical lovers."

As for Enjolras and Marius in the musical, how much the "they were best friends before Marius got lovestruck" aspect gets played up depends on the production. Different translations, different direction, and different actors all affect it--some Enjolrati give Marius a sympathy cuddle after Eponine snuffs it, and some just pat him on the shoulder; Simon Bailey screams "NOOOO!" and pounds the floor in agony when Marius gets shot, and Aaron Lazar pretty much leaves him for Grantaire to look after; both sets of French lyrics suggest they're fond of each other more than the English lyrics do. It just depends.

Yeah, in the musical Enjolras and Marius can sometimes be portrayed as quite good friends. Each actor who played Enjolras has probably figured out his own answer for that bit of blocking. Of course, it might just have to be done to make sure that the audience notices Marius getting shot.

What about in the TAC where Enjy and Marius have a "moment" after Eponine's death?
Eponine93

Is there a link to that on Youtube?

I also watched the show in Lillestrm. This is what i think of the matter.

Marius gets rather late to the fighting, but is the first to be shot down. Enjolras however dont notice because he is to busy fighting. Then almost all of the Amis are shot, and Enjorlas bend down over one of them, who lies next to Marius. When he get up he only then notice Marius lying there, he cries out "NO, Marius" and then goes waving the flag.

It is like he is thinking when he sees Marius "OH NO, not you too!!" and then "What the hell, im gonna die anyway, so lets do it with style!" and starts waving the flag.

Their relationship in this prodution seem to be nothing more than friends.

Maybe that was what happened. But I hold on to my version. I'll see it one more time in mars, I'll pay closer attention to it then:)

"What the hell, I'm gonna die anyway, so lets do it with style!" So great scene Very Happy

Their relationship in this prodution seem to be nothing more than friends I've never thought of them as more. Is there any more to it in other produtions? I would have liked to see that.

It seem to be referred to it ealier in this thread, but i`d rather not think of them as more than friends. I dont much like slash pairings of characters that were not meant to be. Unless they are very well written Razz
lovemoonyforever

No, I wouldn't exactly go for Enjolras/Marius. Neutral But it would have been intresting to see how the actors (or are they called singers?) pulled it of Smile

Oh, yikes. Of all the people in the WORLD who should NOT be paired together, it's Ken Doll and Butterball.

Ken Doll and Butterball indeed;)

I saw it one more time, and in London, and now I agree with starsong. But this time I thought that scene was terrible, as Enjolras now added some mad laughter Sad But I loved Simon Bailey Very Happy

I've never seen anyone in the musical put a romantic slant on Enjolras and Marius, just portray them as friends. How close they are depends on the actor.

The Broadway revival lays it on pretty thick with the Enjolras/Grantaire, though. Makes sense, since it has more support from the book than Enjolras/Marius, which is practically a nonsense pairing.
