Replace a Song

...with a pop song.

We already have Eponine rockin' out in trench coat under a bunch of shuttered windows screeching out "You Oughta Know" in place of "On My Own," and stalker Javert expressing his unrelenting love for the runaway convict in "I'll be Watching You." I'm assuming that song replaces "Stars," right? Hehe.

Any other ideas?
lesmisloony

Shouldn't Lovely Ladies become, like, "Lady Marmalade" or something?
LesMisForever

Well, it is not a pop song, but "The Internationale" could easily replace "Do you hear the people sing"

So, too, could something like "The Battle Cry of Freedom"; the first time I played DYHTPS on the piano my mother thought it was an American Civil War song.

(Speaking of which: "The Vacant Chair," anyone?)

I'm in love with that.

I'm just imagining all the whores singing, "Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir?" and dancing ... I'm laughing sooo hard right now ...

Love,
Cosette

A little fall of rain should be replaced with Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss"

How about "Drink With Me" becoming "100 Years to Live"?

Nah. I prefer the original version of the song.

As in ALFOR or Last Kiss? (I only know the one by Pearl Jam). I googled and youtubed and I guess you mean the original one by Frank Wilson?

I think there is no shortage of songs (maybe not pop, though) with similar spirit, but i thought "The Internationale" could fit for more than one reason.

It was written during/after the Paris Commune (and in that one the "blood of the martyrs" from DYHTPS REALLY watered the meadows of France. The Army killed anything between 20000-50000, and another 20000, maybe more, were excuted later) just about 40 years later from our story, and it was written by a French, and later composed by another one.
But, later on down the history the Soviet state kind of hijacked the song, and made it its national anthem.

Sorry for digerssion, but hey, that is "Les Miserables" forum after all Smile

"Anarchy" by the Sex Pistols instead of "Red and Black." Or any number of ra-ra-revolution punk songs.

I have to youtube, like, all of these songs to know what they are, and the video for this (don'r stone me for being ignorant to the group or whatever...) had a blond guy jumping around yelling, "I AM AN ANTICHRIST!" in the first few seconds... it struck me as really funny in the LM context...

Exactly!

...this is a humorous thread, right? Cause I totally wasn't trying to be a douchebag in a serious one. =X

Hehehe, I know. I just felt I should... share... my extremely late understanding of the joke. Because now I have a mental image of Enj bouncing around the "ABC Cafe" screaming. Which, of course, was your intention.

Very Happy
Kragey

Yeah, it struck me as being pretty fabulous.

I vote to replace "In My Life" with that J.Lo song ... "Do It Well," I think it's called ...

I ain't never met a man like that
(No!)
I ain't never fell so far so fast
(No!)
You can turn me on, throw me off-track,
Boy, you do it, do it, do it, do it, you do it well!

Yes perfect!

I have another one!!
Iris for Who Am I.
Monsieur D'Arque

One Day More = "Welcome To The Black Parade," by My Chemical Romance. Literally, they're the same song.

A Heart Full Of Love = "Your Song," by Elton John.

At The End Of The Day = "That's Life" by Bleu.

Master Of The House = "This Is The Life" by Weird Al.

Who Am I = "Show Me The Way" by Styx.

Finale = "What A Wonderful World/The Black Parade reprise" by Louis Armstrong and My Chemical Romance, respectively.

Come To Me = "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" by Celine Dion or Meat Loaf, depending on which version you prefer.

On My Own = "Don't Let It End" by Styx."

And, I know all of the others are pop/rock songs, so I move to replace the Internationale with a more appropriate choice.

Do You Hear The People Sing = "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who.
kittengoespop

Red and Black = "Revolution" by The Beatles.
Monsieur D'Arque

Les Miserock.
melissalive33

lesmisloony wrote:

this works for me Smile
Monsieur D'Arque

I would love to see Les Miserock staged as a parody...

Victor Hugo's classic novel of revolution, religion, love, decadence, corruption and self-discovery comes to life, with emo haircuts and buzzsaw guitars.
EponineMNFF

That reminds me of a student production I saw when all of the students wore skinny jeans and modern sneakers.

I was really confused as to why they couldn't afford to rent proper pants, until I realized that the school has a huge budget for all of their shows so it must have been a choice.

That sounds kinda cool.
Mistress

On My Own---Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne...perhaps it's a bit too upbeat? Maybe Good Enough by Evanrescence would be better, even though it doesn't deal directly with rejection it does express Eponine's feelings.

Javert's Suicide---Breaking the Habit by Linkin Park, perhaps?

I Dreamed a Dream---Killing Me Softly
brizejellicle

This probably wouldn't be a great replacement but I always thought the song 'Black Eyes, Blue Tears' by Shania Twain would be a good song for Fantine.

Also 'Bless the Broken Road' by Rascal Flatts as a song either for Cosette and Marius or for Valjean.

And it's another musical song but 'Falcon in a Dive' from the Scarlet Pimpernel would be a great song for Javert.

The song 'Good Intentions' by Steve Conn would be a good song for Valjean not as a replacement but as an added extra.

Toby Keith's 'Dream Walkin'' would be a good song for stalker Eponine if you reversed the genders in the song.

Josh Groban's 'Let Me Fall' for Valjean instead of God on High
Tenalto

I know that there have already been a gazillion suggestions for "On My Own," but I felt the need to throw in my own two cents. What about "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"? It was playing on the radio in the bathroom today, and I got this sudden image of Eponine meandering along in excessive eye-liner.
Monsieur D'Arque

Drink with me = "No One Lives Forever" by Oingo Boingo. Completely opposite intention of song, but its' fatalistic and fun for the Barricade Boys, and includes a dance break!
Mistress

I still think Killing Me Softly would be a good replacement for I Dreamed a Dream, or even On My Own.

Another good one for IDAD would be Angels by Within Temptation

I think a drunken 1000 Miles sung by the barricade boys to make fun of Marius would also be a good addition...imagine the bad Scottish accents XD

I think Eponine could also sing I Will Always Love You too...preferebly the Whitney Huston version

Nuh-huh ... it was a good thing. OMG that's the funniest thing ever. Especially with all of the really irritating Whitney Houston "high notes."

Eponine: (walking through the streets of Paris) iiiiiIIIIIII wiEEl awwwlways looooove yoooOOO*upthreeoctaves*OOOO*pointless riffing*ou
Mistress

Ok then, how about the original Dolly Parton version?...either way, I honestly think the lyrics would be absolutley perfect for Eponine:

http://artists.letssingit.com/dolly-parton-lyrics-i-will-always-love-you-xjq6gz6

Tell me that isn't Eponine's theme song in some way.
curlyhairedsoprano91

Mm, well ... if it's not funny, then it's not terribly Eponine. It's selfless Eppybopper Eponine. "I wish you joy and happiness, but above all of this I wish you love"?

Try, "I wish you death! Death death death! But above all of this I wish you love (provided it's with me)."
Monsieur D'Arque

Dog Eat Dong = Yo, Ho, Yo Ho, a Pirate's LIfe For Me.
Mistress

Really? I mean I know Eponine would do anything for Marius more out of devotion than selflessness, but I think it'd still require some degree of selflessness to go as far as helping him hook up with another girl.

Please feel free to correct me and/or educate me if I'm wrong.

Well, in the novel, she also led Marius to the barricades in the hope that they would both be killed which kind of cancels out the things she had done to help him earlier. I think she did want to see Marius happy but couldn't stand the fact that his happiness didn't include her.

The musical, of course, plays up the selflessness factor much more but I like it when the actress makes her more bitter/conflicted because it makes the character more believable.

Random note on "And I will always love you" song. I used to (attempt to) belt the crap out of that song when I was in preschool which I imagine must have been pretty painful for my parents. I still have a soft spot for that song even though that huge pause before "AND IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII will always loooove yoooouuuu" cracks me up.

Ok, I see what you're saying...my only exposure has been to the musical, and only in chunks, really. I've only watched the TAC, listened to the OBC, and heard samples of the OLC Red Tape thing. I don't really know the story in depth like most of you guys do.

But anyway, I found another song that would be even better for Eponine, except that it references her guitar, her car, and a guy named Drew:

http://artists.letssingit.com/taylor-swift-lyrics-teardrops-on-my-guitar-hblstbt

But If they can trwist and bend lyrics into the perfect mold for Moulin Rouge, then I'm sure it could be done here.

I'm thinking of starting one up after watching Neil Patrick Harris in Glee. I actually started hyperventilating when I found out Will and Bryan were auditioning for Les Mis. I was annoyed they didn't actually sing anything from the show, though (NPH's confrontation is hilarious). Enough about Glee.

Please don't murder me for reviving this thread but I had a very funny mental image today of Eponine, Javert and possibly Marius singing Blondie's "One way or another".

Oh, and how about Queen's "No one but you" instead of ECAET. I recently had an argument with my best friend who is a WWRY obsessive and this was one of the many reasons why she claimed WWRY is better than Les Mis.

This kinda the reverse but in my Drama class today we listened to "Once I had a husband" from Blood Brothers (which we are studying) and thought it could totally be replaced with IDAD.

I don't see how that fits. Stars is about finding a fugitive who has evaded you for years and reflecting on order/law(r). Boulevard of Broken Dreams is... not. Please explain your thought process here?

Late last night, I had the idea that 'Memory' from Cats could be a good Fantine song if taken out of context. You know,
Quote:
Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Sort of thinking about how she used to be. And then you have the streetlamp lyrics, too, which, if the song comes after Lovely Ladies... Maybe it could work for Eponine, too. I guess reflecting on her childhood. But that doesn't fit the context of any of her current songs in the musical. Of course, it isn't a pop song.

...Don't ask me why I was thinking about this forum late last night.
Javvyshomegirl73

Hmmmm...*giggles* I change my mind...Replace Stars with Hungry like the wolf by Duran Duran *bursts out laughing* I KNOW what it's really about..But if you look at it like the wolf tracking down his pray IT works

I like that, there are definitely some parallels between Fantine and Grizabella. I've always though Elaine Page would have been a good Fantine. Apparently, she was the first choice to play Fantine in the original London cast.
