Review 13th of December

Hello

Last Wednesday i went for my 10th visit. So, it was a mini celebration.

The show was very good, and i fully enjoyed it. Here is quick review:

JOJ...i think enough has been said about him Smile . The guy is just amazing. But, i believe he missed a line during "At the end of the day" Shocked

HPJ...pretty much the same as my first impression. Excellent voice, but, a little bit too high. Little bit of toning down wouldn't harm.

Sophia...i have to admit that i didn't like her as much as my last visit. But, still, she was very good.

The Thenardiers....i liked them better than the last time. They are still not my "cuppa", but they made me chuckle once, or twice.

Simon Bailey...the weakest link in my opinion. As i said last time, i can live with weak Thenardiers, but i want my Enjolras to be good. Simon is not bad, but his voice is weak, and that is big drawback.

Jon Lee...last time i saw his understudy, so this was the first time since his first stint. He seemed to be playing the role more "manly". I also noticed two movements, which i liked. I don't know whether he meant them, or not though. The first was during "A little fall of rain". At the end of the song, Eponine tried to kiss him by trying to pull his head towards her mouth, but he seemed to resist, and she died before the kiss.
The second was during "Valjean's confession". Valjean puts his hand on him, put he seemed to pull out. At any rate , i liked him then, and i liked him now.

Laura Brydon...First cover for Eponine. Again, i missed the main Eponine. I thought Laura was a solid and good Eponine. Eventhough her voice was stronger than the 2nd cover, i somehow liked the 2nd cover more. But, i am taking nothing away from her.

Emily Bull...First cover Cosette. I don't want to be cruel , but, unless someone sucks big time, then anyone will do. That said, i think the current main Cosette (Gina Beck) is better than all the previous ones i saw. So, i missed her just little bit.

The Audience...one of the tamest, and quitests Sad . You didn't even get the usual big laugh on the "set pieces".

This was extra special visit, because i managed to convince a member of my family, my uncle, to come with me. And he LOVED it. So, we have a new fan of the show.

And btw Enrique, he is mightly impressed (like you) by the lightning during "On my Own". And Eponine has got another fan Laughing

Yes! I love the lighting in that scene. It's the first scene to use the entire set and still manage intimacy. I mostly just like the symbolism and overall picture.

Gotta love it. Smile

I'm sorry, but you said that Hans' voice was too high. Really? He has an exceptionally low voice; he is a bass. For example, when he played Valjean a few year back, during Who Am I?, on the the line "24601!" Hans couldn't get the last, high note and had to stay on the same notes of "2460".

I like his voice in that it's lovely and deep and rich and suits the character very well. I don't like his style, which has been addressed in my various reviews of the current cast as well as a special thread.

Hello

Well, Olly, i am not really expert in various voacl ranges, and maybe i didn't use the appropriate word.

How about too strong? Very Happy . Basically, he is little bit loud Very Happy .
olly

Haha, sorry, I didn't mean to come across as vehemently vicious. I just thought you may have made a mistake! Very Happy

Oh, I may see what you mean about him being fairly loud, but I like Javert's voice loud. In my opinion I don't think the character can have too strong a voice. However, I completely see what you mean!

If you love JOJ you can order his album at www.johnowenjones.com or pick it up at the Queen's Theatre Very Happy

Hello

No need to be sorry Very Happy .

I do like his voice, and even his posture. But, i think his voice is loud and that prevents people from fully understanding the lyrics. All that said, i do like his Javert.

I can't remember whether you were here, or not when we discussed Michael McCarthy. He reminds me of him little bit. I don't mind Javert being emotionless, because that is how he should me IMO.

Hmmm... According to that site,

"John Owen-Edwards and Tracie Bennett continue in their roles as Jean Valjean and Madame Thenardier, respectively."

Who's he? I want to see if he's any good!

He's the love child of a certain long-running Phantom and this guy.

Maybe he just married his civil partner and took his surname? Laughing

John Owen-Edwards was a musical director in the West End, particularly in the 80s and he's conducted lots of studio recordings of classic shows for TER/JAY, so probably was quite familiar to someone at Theatre.com, if that can be considered an excuse. Very Happy
