The anticipation!

What is it about going to see Les Miserables that makes all other events in life seem somehow superficial? Im going to see Les Mis in 17 days, and for the last 2 months I have been counting down the days in my mind! As each day passes I get just a little more hyped, and have to go out and buy one more thing for the event! Today was the dress and now my excitement levels are so intense I swear that if you look deep into my eyes you can see a small les Mis logo bouncing in them! How I long to make time go faster
Jordan

Are you coming to London to see it?

Have you seen this thread? http://musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=47232 Confused
Bex

yeah, im seeing it in london. i've heard mixed rumours about the new cast...so i'll have to go and see it and let you know what i thought. last year i was blown away, but im such a fanatic of the music and everything that im sure i'll be in such a euphoria that i wont care, which i know sounds daft, but its true.
javertsw

You'll have a great time.

I'm not the biggest fan of the current cast, but it's still a good show. It wasn't like the cast were bad- they just didn't stand out. The show still blew me away as usual.
LesMisForever

Hello

I agree with Javertsw. They are not exceptional (apart from JOJ), and i also thought that the last cast was far superior, but the show is still enjoyable, and some actually think this is an amazing cast.

However if you loved the last cast chances are that you won't be overwhelmed by this one.

At any rate, you will see yourself, and let us know.
Bex

...ah...i did see the last cast...they were incredable!
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Incredible!? *scofs* TAC...."dream cast" Yeah right! Try London last year! OMFG...although i did have to sit with this really anoying couple who came in druing the opening chords...its like they'd waited till then especally to irriate everyone else on the balcony!!!
Bex

I hate people who do that! they should have to wait outside until the show has started! you know what bugs me though? the look people give you when you burst into tears during 'a little fall of rain' i mean come on?! to not cry you'd have to have a heart of stone (for last years cast at any rate!)
olly

During the Epilogue last time I went two weeks ago. This woman next to me was crying during A Little Fall Of Rain. But during the Epilogue she was in fits of tears, actually making audible sobs out. My mum next to me still crys during ALFOR and Epilogue (just silent tears), which I find still really tounching.

But the woman next to me was offputting.
All_For_Laura

I really wanted to see it when I was in london...I've seen it on tour here in the states which was really good.

When I saw Blood Brothers, some annoying dumb couple came in about 10 minutes late, then actually had the nerve to talk at a normal volum for a few mintues! d'oh!
Ulla Dance Again!

I saw Les Mis back when it was on tour in Boston, MA.

Bex, just wondering, do you go to Halloweentown's forum? I'm saying this because I remember there was a member that had a similar name and posted on the Les Mis topic I made.

Anyhoo, enjoy the show! Very Happy

I've seen Les Miz over 50 times and I've never cried.

Draw your own conclusions.

no...i dont think so...you mean to tell me there is another Bex out there who loves les mis?! she must be stopped! imposter!
liza_minelli

Omgosh for me Les Miserables means soooo much it was the first ever musical I was in and most of the time I stood in the wings crying!! It's such a touching musical especially Fall Of Rain & the finale.. "They will live again in freedom in the garden of the lord..."
The_Wicked

My friend went to see Les Mis in London last year and she said that it was the best version she had ever seen. She said that Marius was pheonomenal and John Owen Jones and Javert had the prettiest voices she had ever heard. She also said that the Act 1 Gavroche was a different person than the act 2 Gavroche... one was an actual little boy and the other was an adult woman... I hate it when girls play Gavroche. It just irrrrrrrrrrritates me.

WHAT?! I didn't know they did this. I thought they just sent the kids home early on the evening performances, not put a woman in it?!
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

WHAT!? How the....? I'm sure your friend was just confused. And if that did ouccur i'm sure it was extreme circumstances of some sort!

*scratches beard* Hum...getting curiouser and curiouser!
Aimee

Well I assure you that doesn't normally happen. It must have been something odd that happened.
The_Wicked

I think it was something odd that happened but I just though this replacement was a stupid choice. There has to be at least one other little boy in London with a kick-ass cockney accent and a decent singing voice. Right?
Aimee

Probably not a boy who could a] get there in time, b] be able to perform due to restrictions on numbers of nights etc c] that's what swings are for.

Are you sure it wasn't the girl who played little Cosette? That's possible too.

It's happened before. Have you heard of Bobbie Chatt?

http://leonora_christine.tripod.com/bobbiegavroche.html

Well, now you have.

That, and there are probably safety regulations regarding the barricade. You can't just grab some kid off the street and expect him to know how to navigate the turntable and climb that thing.
The_Wicked

I didn't mean just grab some poor kid off the street. Obviously that's insane. I meant why couldn't the understudy to Gavroche be a kick-ass little cockney boy in the first place? I mean, I'm sure several little boys auditioned for the show that would have fit the part better than a full grown woman. She said it was a woman who was about 5' or so and she says it wasn't little Cosette. Sorry for the confusion.
The Very Angry Woman

The reason they rotate is SO the other boys can understudy. I would assume what you're talking about was a very extreme situation (much like Bobbie Chatt's).
Aimee

If the boy did act one, he clearly was taken ill or something urgent that stopped him going on for act 2. There is no way they are going to hold up the performance for the understudy to turn up. It could take a couple of hours for that.
Bex

hmm...i sure that doesnt normally happen...in fact i know it doesnt! Last year, Little cossette and little Eponine are the only two female child actors, they just swap roles round. Thats what they told me anyway when i met them...
javertsw

Watching a grown woman would probaly be better anyway.
She's probaly a better actress.
Bex

oh i dont know...i know some adult actresses who cant cant for toffee (or any other sticky substance for that matter! Wink )

(on another note...peach and barley is the greatest drink man ever made!)
Aimee

But they wuldn't be playing 'swing' in Les Mis, I assure you. swings are known for their talent and ability to mould to many, many roles at the drop of a hat.
Bex

ah right as always Aimee! although i didnt really means swings, i was just saying in general...
Aimee

LOL, Oh if only. Wink

I'm just stating my thoughts, others are just as valid.

Thanks. That was interesting. When was it? A while ago as the reference to Adam Searles.

Oh, I'd love to see what Adam Searles looks like/sounds like now, if anyone has any photos or clips? I've tried google but came up with jack.

Thanks.

Bobbie Chatt used to post on the Center Stage message boards (now defunct). I seem to remember it had happened relatively recently, so sometime in the mid-to-late '90s.

If Searls was the original Gavroche, when did he end?

Searles was not the original Gavroche in any venue.
duva

Yeah, it was Ruth Brown. A friend of mine went the same day (unless she's done it more than once). It was back in July, I think.
Bex

on a slightly different note...Did anybody see Sean Kingsley last year? I confess when he first started i looked at my mate i was with and shuddered as he was so rough and corse with his vocals, but then after the Bishop bit, he suddenly produced this beautifully mellow voice that practicaly made me melt! He's so fantastic in the way he changes the character of Jean Valjean after his convertion! Fantastic theatre!
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

I did the same. I think i had got so used to a mellow JVJ that Kinglseys interprtation of the chracter was soo refreshing. And then Bring Him Home and the Epilogue were even more mournful in cotrast to the earlier heavier and rougher voice.

TAC Gavroche, he last played the role on stage, as far as I'm aware, between May 6th and June 4th 1997, during the Plymouth engagement of the UK tour. He later did the role at the Chelmsford Concert on the 24th August 1997, for (I believe) the last time.

Yes, he was fantastic! I saw him and had the same thoughts as you there.
