Thenardier in the SE-Still worth it?

I recently expressed my outrage at the magnitude of cuts in "Dog Eats Dog" in the School Edition, which, to a larger extent, goes for all of Thenardier's songs. I think Thenardier is the most shafted character in the School Edition, and learning about all these cuts almost made me not want to audition for Thenardier in a forthcoming production of the show (auditions are in the fall). So, my question to all of you is this: Is it still worth it to play Thenardier, despite all of the cuts?
The Very Angry Woman

It's up to you. Do YOU think you could get all you could out of a role while putting aside your strong feelings about the material you'd have to adhere to?
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

Simple answer is Yes. Agreed he seems to have sufferd the worse at the hands of the cutters...BUT he's still an acting challenge...to get the edge of evil mixed in with umour you stilll NEED to be good. He's not naturally funny...you have a lot of material. PLUS if you get it rght everyone reme, bers and loves you!

(I speak from experince)

If it was a part that you wanted to play and you thought you could manage to pull together the character before you heard about the cuts, than I think you should still audition for him. He is still the same character, and so you should be able to give exactly the same impression, it will just be more difficult with less time to give that impression. Since those cuts were made officially for the school edition, then obviously it can be done.

I think you should do it anyway, and yes, it is worth it. The best Thenardier/Mme Thenardier pair I've ever seen was in a school edition. So it can be done, that's for sure. It's hard, but it can be pulled off and when it is, it's really brilliant. So go for it.

thernardier

the part may not be as big in the school version but it's the actor who makes the character as big or as small as he wants to...they had to cut stuff, as it is, les mis is insanely long and some parts are rather inappropriate, just be thankfull that your school version isn't getting further censored like ours did: marius and cosette weren't allowed to kiss, and during lovely ladies, seven days at sea can make you hungry for a poke was changed to seven days at sea can make you hungry for a joke, so yeah...enjoy thernardier, he's awosome
olly

I'd say yes, but also say that I think 'Javert' is the most "shafted" character out of the School Edition.

Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation HA! who decided that change? No offense, but that is pathetic. Bet it was funny for those in the audience who actually knew the words though!

Its up to the individual, but as an actor you should understand that what makes Thenardier such a strong character is his personality.
His evil intent and vicious manipulative dark humour is expressed through his actions and the way he delivers the lines given not by the selected text and sentences.
If you feel that the lines cut take away from these traits then you've already made your mind up- personally I feel that its not the lines that make the character- but the actions and delivery- especially with such a fiend as Monsieur Thenardier!

change in lyrics

our principle decided that it wasn't appropriate for a private jewish high school to say poke (finally this year in tempest and wss she backe doff and we did whatever the hell we felt like), funny thing also, she's was mme.thenardier's mom, but she couldn't convience her to let us keep the lyrics, but the guy who said the line changed it back to poke, i think the principle nearly fainted...o well, i was worth it Laughing

Having not seen or heard the original recording and only the SE recording, I like Thenardier, and I think that Thenardier is definitely worth going out for! He's a fun character and still has a few songs to himself.

Still worth it.

Wow, I haven't posted in a while. Hello, again, everyone. How I have missed everyone!
