Weird pairings

So I was browsing through youtube the other day and I found a musicvideo based on the pairing Eponine x Javert.
Most of you must be stabbing your eyes out after reading that, but I think it is rather a cute pairing. I have a thing for odd/out of the question pairings.
Of course we are all familiar with Eponine x Enjolras but this is something I had never heard before...
Quique

I've always wanted to see Eponine and Cosette fall madly in love with each other, lol.
Fantine

That would be akward Razz

What about Cosette and Montparnasse? Wink
Enjolras x Cosette... It has been done, or so I heard.

hahahaha! that is MISERABLE. lol
Orestes Fasting

Hey, you're looking at someone who wrote Enjolras/Fantine. Anything is possible.

Based on a couple of different things Hugo said in the novel, I have the sneaking urge to see Courfeyrac/Cosette.
Quique

I've always imagined Valjean and Javert looking lovesick and staring at each other while singing, "I swear to you I will be there."

Awww, lol.
Orestes Fasting

Haha. To say nothing of Enjolras and Grantaire's interaction during Drink With Me turning into something a little more steamy--but that's not really a weird pairing.

There are a couple other moments in the musical that lend themselves to really strange pairings, but they're all of the "ewwww!" variety.

I think I read that. I also made some icons based off that pairing.

Don't get us started on all the double meaning lyrics in Les Mis again Quique...
Altough it's quite entertaining and never ceases to humour me. Cool

I've heard of Cosette/Gavroche.

That baffled me a little.

I think that one has to do with the Les Miserables Cosette anime that was released recently. I've seen some of it and Cosette and Gavroche are really good friends in it. They take care of each other, so I can see where it comes from.
lostquiche

Valjean and Eponine-It's like Harison Ford!

You're right, that is ew.
As is Gavroche x Cosette, for that matter.

Javert x Fantine would be rather interesting. And of course there's Valjean x Fantine which has been hinted at in the 1998 movie...

Gavroche/Cosette is way off in the abstract because they never met, but the first time I heard one of the revival Gavroche kids yell "Get your hands off me!" when Grantaire tries to drag him away from the barricade, I went Shocked.

^ lol!!!!!!

How about Enjolras and Marius? Cute couple. Especially Lazar and Jacobs, awwww, lol.
Orestes Fasting

I've always thought that "Citizen, my mother is the Republic" was Enjolras' idea of a pickup line. Laughing Especially in context--coming up behind Marius, laying his hand on his shoulder, and whispering that in his ear? Hahaha.

As for the pic, it was from some non-musical production of the novel. I don't have the link anymore.

lol. No, I don't do those types of parings.

But as far as unusual couples go, I'm more of an Eponine/Enjolras person myself. (Which I made a video for that pairing too.)

As for Enjolras/Cosette, I'm not too keen on Enjolras falling for Cosette, but if it was one-sided (Cosette falling for Enjolras) then I kinda like it.
What Is This Feeling?

hmmmmmmmmm
would ya ever do a Cosette/ Eponine vid?
EponineBarker

hmmmmmmmmmmmm........well....

I would be slightly hesitant, but if it was requested, I might. Although that pairing would not be my first choice.

Although I might do one to challenge myself. I like doing things that are different.
What Is This Feeling?

what other "non canon pairings would you pick, love? Anything else on the unusual side?
NotoriousFunnt

Valjean/Cosette definitely makes me want to spork my eyes out. Just no.

However...okay, the only fanfic I *ever* read is Myst...but if I was to read fanfic in another fandom, I would read Valjean/Fantine if it exists. That's a pairing that I've had a fondness for since I first saw the musical. My friend who recently listened to the CSR before we left college for the summer also agrees with me that it is a plausible pairing. It's really the only Les Mis pairing I'd get behind.

Valjean/Javert makes me giggle. I don't know why; I just can't take it seriously.

I saw an Eponine/Enjolras icon somewhere...might have been here, can't remember...that said: "Eponine and Enjolras's Love Story" and then had a pic of Eponine going "who the hell are you?" and Enjolras going "ditto", and that's all I can really think about that pairing.

Cosette/Eponine sounds really twisted. Though if it exists I'd read it out of curiosity just for the twisted factor.
EponineBarker

What Is This Feeling? wrote:

Well, recently, I thought about Fantine/Javert, Valjean/Fantine I've thought of for a while, and I did read a Cosette/Javert fic once, a long time ago, so I always thought of that as a one-sided possibility.
What Is This Feeling?

Oh I have to admit I'd be curious to read a Cosette/ Eponine one, I must say lol. Just want to see how it would be handled.
EponineBarker

I've thought about reading one too, just for odd factor.

But no, it's mostly Eponine/Enjolras for me, if you ever go to fanfiction.net and read my stories, you'll see.
Kristin Chenoweth

I'm a HUGE Marius/Cosette shipper...They're the equivalent of Christine/Raoul in the PotO world, and I'm a huge Christine/Raoul shipper, too...It's just so cute! And canon!

Cute+canon=awesome pairing.

Also...I like Joly/Bossuet. Or Joly/Musichetta.

I like Jean Prouvaire/OFC. And Enjy/OFC, as long as it's done with some level of competence, and as long as the OFC isn't a Mary Sue. Enjy/R...not one of my favorite pairings, but I'm okay with it.

Then something must be wrong with me, because I love Christine/Raoul together, and yet, I'm not a huge Marius/Cosette shipper. I mean, I read those stories sometimes, but not often.

It's pretty impossible to write Enjolras with a female character who's not a Mary-Sue.

...hell, it's pretty impossible to write Enjolras with anyone but Grantaire or one of the other students. And even that's tricky.

I believe that it's challenging, but not impossible.

yeh, I agree. Enjolras is a dedicated revolutionary, who has social justice in his blood. I jst can't see him unless he is with one of fellow revolutionaries. I guess Eponine could work though.

But alas, he is no longer here (he hasn't been for years!) and so it is up to us to debate and argue over who's right, who's wrong, and who's just plain insane. (Like me!)

I like thinking outside the box.
Orestes Fasting

Heh, I've gotten into arguments before over whether Hugo really did intend for there to be romantic subtext between Enjolras and Grantaire. The rest of the students, yeah, there's not much in the book to indicate homoerotic undertones--but there is no way on earth that either Enjolras or Grantaire was straight.

I like weird pairings, but only if they're well-explained and set up. It's fun to take an utterly bizarre pairing and figure out how to make it plausible.

What makes you say that?

Which is excatly what I try to do. Like in my most recent E/E story, I'm trying to give Enjolras more of a reason why he's not interested in women, other than: "all he cares about the the revolution."
What Is This Feeling?

Hmmm I understand though. Definately. I seem only being in love with someone who believes in his morals/ideas, ya know? Which I'm sure Eponine isnt against lol.

What makes you say that?

Well, a few reasons, but the long and short of it is that Hugo shoehorns a bunch of classical allusions into both of their descriptions, allusions that don't necessarily have anything to do with their actual relationship, and don't serve much of a purpose in the text except to make reference to a whole bunch of classical lovers.

Then add in Grantaire's adoration of Enjolras, and Enjolras' lack of interest in women--neither of which would point to slashy subtext on their own, but which take on an additional meaning with the references Hugo uses. In that context, the way the description lingers on Enjolras' almost feminine beauty, in contrast to a very masculine nature, is also quite telling.

I can list the allusions for you if you'd like. Laughing
EponineBarker

I'm totally confused, but go ahead!

(I haven't read the entire book yet, and it's almost 11:00 pm, so I can't take in too much right now. Laughing )

The Japanese Enjolrati come to mind whenever I think of Hugo's descriptions of the character. I think that's the only production in the world where Enjolras dyes his hair consistently and has an almost fem, but masculine look at the same time, lol.

lol, I never thought of that!
Orestes Fasting

Okay, here is the chapter in question. It doesn't really have any spoilers, so feel free to read it all the way through.

Quote:
Enjolras was a charming young man, who was capable of being terrible. He was angelically handsome. He was a savage Antinous. [...] His two and twenty years appeared to be but seventeen; he was serious, it did not seem as though he were aware there was on earth a thing called woman. [...] He hardly saw the roses, he ignored spring, he did not hear the carolling of the birds; the bare throat of Evadne would have moved him no more than it would have moved Aristogeiton; he, like Harmodius, thought flowers good for nothing except to conceal the sword.

You can read the section on Grantaire yourself to get an idea of Hugo's development of his character, which is rather different from the musical. The section I'm interested in is this one:

Quote:
There are men who seem to be born to be the reverse, the obverse, the wrong side. They are Pollux, Patrocles, Nisus, Eudamidas, Ephestion, Pechmeja. They only exist on condition that they are backed up with another man; their name is a sequel, and is only written preceded by the conjunction and; and their existence is not their own; it is the other side of an existence which is not theirs. Grantaire was one of these men. He was the obverse of Enjolras.

One might almost say that affinities begin with the letters of the alphabet. In the series O and P are inseparable. You can, at will, pronounce O and P or Orestes and Pylades.

As Hugo only sees fit to mention the latter halves of those last allusions, in full they are Castor and Pollux, Achilles and Patrocles, Nisus and Euryalus, Alexander and Hephestion, and Dubreuil and Pechmeja. (I can't find anything on Eudamidas besides that he was a king of Sparta.)

Edit: And yeah, Quique, the Japanese Enjolras actors have it down perfectly. It's really hot.
What Is This Feeling?

fascinating. Yeh, Enjolras/ Grantaire were lovers Wink
Kinda cute I like them together, lol I mean can't you see Enjolras fihting today for equality for both sexualties and justice, lol.
EponineBarker

Hey, thanks for putting that up!

I have thought though that after reading the intro to Grantaire, or I should say, this sentence:

"He respected, venerated, and loved, Enjolras..."

(Or something along those lines.)

I always viewed the whole Enjy/R pairing as one-sided. (Grantaire loving Enjolras.)

But then again, that line could mean so many other things.
What Is This Feeling?

hmm what do you think Orestes? Is it only one sided?
Orestes Fasting

Oh, I don't think they were lovers necessarily. Hugo is very careful to clarify that Enjolras is a virgin and subverts all his desires to his passion for the revolution--and that he doesn't like Grantaire much at all. But I do think that the sexual tension was deliberate, and that their eventual reconciliation meant more than a smile and a handshake if you look at the subtext.

(Edit: Sorry, I wrote that before I saw the posts about whether it was one-sided. To clarify--yes, I think it was a one-sided affection on Grantaire's part until their death scene. At that point it became requited.)
EponineBarker

Perhaps. You do have a point.

Perhaps this is just one of those mysteries of Les Mis we'll never figure out completely?

Orestes Fasting

If there were, do you think there would even be a debate over whether Enjolras/Grantaire is what Hugo intended? Laughing No, no open declarations of sodomite intent--but the reconciliation scene in question is one of the more powerful scenes in the book, and I don't want to spoil it.

Enjolras' long-lost cousin. The reason nobody's heard of him is that the family disowned him and tries not to talk about him at all, because he keeps doing stupid crap like shacking up with gutter wenches or swooning into Grantaire's manly arms.

I guess I will now admit I once tried to write a Javert/Cosette fic.

It was awful. I'd been ill, fell asleep in economics class, and woke up with this idea that Javert didn't kill himself, but patched up his differences with Valjean who invited him home to dinner...there was a second insurrection, Javert and Marius both ended up on the barricades, and Marius died.

And Javert ended up with Cosette.

I'm not very good at captioning, but someone definitely should.

Aww...Poor Marius... Sad

Interesting idea!

Worse still...I had a big crush on my first Marius back then!

Who was your first Marius?

Hugh Panaro back when he was with the 1st NT.

I told him that on the condition he wouldn't laugh at me.

He laughed.

I never knew he played Marius. How was he?

He was the original Marius with the 1st NT, then moved up to the NYC company...his first Broadway role.

I really liked him in the role. Granted, he was my first Marius, I was about fourteen, and didn't have much to compare him with. But I loved him and so did my foster-mother who was never one to really be impressed by any actor in particular.

We went back to see Les Miz six other times and, without fail, we'd compare every Marius to him. She'd usually be the one to say, "This one isn't as good as that first young man. I wonder what happened to him!"

The one thing that really stood out about his performance...even though I was sitting in the next-to-last row of the mezzanine in a massive theatre...was the sincerity of it.

Aww, but I like Saavedro concept art Smile Oh well, there aren't many Myst fans in the world. Such a shame. Well, here's a new oboe one, one of my favorites because...well, I have great pride in my oboe. My Marigaux can pwn the Lorees of the world. Woot.

Anyway. Fanfic...fanfic doesn't always have to be twisted weird pairings. That, regrettably, tends to be the main reason that people write fic. But I've read fic that is really good and has nothing to do with strange pairings and everything to do with just...well, writing about certain characters in certain universes. My best friend and I, we're both fic writers, and were discussing it the other day...we write fic to tell a story, not to make weird character pairings. Usually I write it to tell things that are mentioned in passing in novels or whatever but I feel the need to explore further.

But unfortunately, most people write it not for the story value but for the weird pairing value. Shame, really.

Writing fanfics to make weird pairings isn't always the reason people write fanfic. There are many out there (including myself) who do excatly what you do, exploring things in the novel/musical/etc. and making it deeper and/or adding their own touch to it.

And I think a lot of fanfiction writers would have to disagree with the last statement about "...most people write it not for the story value but for the weird pairing value."

^That's not entirely true.
NotoriousFunnt

Really? Because in so many fandoms I've perused it seems like that's the main reason. I've not found a lot of fics that are just about exploring the story but about putting characters together in romantic relationships no matter how weird they are.
