Your favorite Javert!

I'm curious to see how you'll respond to this Very Happy

Personally, my favorite in Philip Quast Very Happy
The Very Angry Woman

I wonder how many respondents have actually seen the Javerts they picked.
EponineJavert

seriously
flying_pigs

I put Philip Quast, but I do like Michael McCarthy's portrayal as well.
AndrewShatterhand

My personal favorite is still Roger Allam (based off of recordings of course). Quast is a close second though.
Eponine93

Based on recordings, I would have to go with Roger Allam. Quast has an excellent voice and captures the character excellently, but he can get almost overbearing in the role. And not in a good way. Roger Allam was my first Javert to listen to, so I may be a little bit biased, however.
Orestes Fasting

In terms of recordings, Roger Allam, Philip Quast, and Michael McCarthy are all vying for the top spot. (McCarthy was never "officially" recorded, but I've seen a professionally-shot concert video from Chelmsford similar to the TAC, and I really liked him in it.)

Of the six Javerts I've seen live, I really liked Pierce Peter Brandt, who understudied the role on the tour and whom I saw only a week before the tour closing. All the understudy Javerts I've seen have been better than their principals, though. (Or at least, Drew Sarich was better than Norm Lewis. I haven't seen Ben Davis yet so I can't compare.)

Michael McCarthy Very Happy
Eponine93

Yeah, I'm a little surprised Norm Lewis is up there. He's the original revival Javert, ect. ect., but he's definitely not going to go down in history as one of the best Javerts. But then again... if there was a recording of him as Javert, I'd probably really like him. He does vocally do the role justice. They'res just something missing in his acting.

I'm probably going to see him in The Little Mermaid... I need to find a little kid to bring with me...
EponineMNFF

Robert Hunt has definitely been my favorite so far, but I really like Philip Quast too.
happyguava

Phillip Quast all the way. And not just because I grew up watching him on Play School! He's just... amazing.
LesMisForever

From the recorded ones: Philip Quast

Live: Michael McCarthy all the way. MM ,with JOJ, are my favourite live performers in any role.

The reason I put Norm Lewis up there is because I was just trying to think of Javerts and all I could think of was him Very Happy

Thanks for that Very Happy

Anthony Crivello? Shocked that'd been cool
And Robert Westenburg! Luv that guy Very Happy
Cloudy This Morning

Is this an English-only Javert vote? Because if not, I'm gonna have to go with Miguel del Arco. Otherwise, Roger Allam owns it.
EponineJavert

Any Javert you like - I just put those names up because I only know the English casts Smile
I was actually going to put up some Japanese Javerts but I don't know the casts for any of the three Japanese recordings I have Laughing
LittleGavroche

Michael McCarthy all the way, though I must say, I don't like his look for the role, acting-wise and music-wise, he's ahhh-mazing.
Eponine93

Anyone besides me notice the number of Javerts that have also been princes in Into the Woods?

Just thought it was kind of cool...
EponineJavert

Yeah, I was noticing that Laughing
javertim

Out of the ones in the poll, I chose Roger Allam. If I had paid more attention, I would have noticed there was an "other" option. In that case, I'll say that my favorite Javerts whom I have seen live are David Masenheimer, Michael McCarthy, and Graham Rowat. So, yeah, it's a three-way tie between them. David probably beats the other two because I thought he was the most inventive and original. I thought McCarthy was the closest to book Javert and Graham was just looming, shark-eyed, and commanding.
Glissando

I picked Norm Lewis because I saw him live, and he was pretty much amazing. Or at least I liked him. Philip Quast is amazing on the TAC, though.

You are amazing! David's my favorite too! I'm biased however, because he's my Dad's cousin and my favorite family member.
musicandthemirror

Norm Lewis - He's the only one I've seen, but I liked him.
JulieJordan

My personal favourite would have to be Jeff Nicholson.
Mademoiselle Lanoire

Phillip Quast. Most of the ones I've heard bore me and some of them are laughably bad.
Paula74

Anthony Crivello? Shocked that'd been cool

I saw him...he was absolutely amazing. He was my first and nearly spoiled me for all of the others I've seen or heard.

Of those of the list, I'll go with Norm...he's my second favorite anyway.
elphclaudia

Philip Quast, definately!

But my friend Geno is tied for first.

He played Javert in his high school production and he's like my older brother so of course I liked his performance.

My least favorite is Ben Davis of the current Broadway company. He reminded me too much of Norrington from Pirates 1, 2, & 3.

Blasphemy!
Quique

Richard Kinsey - 1st National Tour

Here's all the Javerts I've seen:

Jeff McCarthy - 2nd NT (Good)
Richard Kinsey - 1st NT (Incredible)
Chuck Wagner - 3rd NT (OK)
David Massenheimer - 3rd NT (Great)
David McDonald - 3rd NT (Good)
Ron Baker - 3rd NT (Meh)
Christopher Innvar - Broadway (OK)
Stephen Bishop - 3rd NT (Amazing)
Gregg Edelman - Broadway (Great)
Philip Hernandez - (Amazing)
Robert Hunt - (Great)
Pierce Peter Brandt - 3rd NT (Great)
Trent Blanton 3rd NT (OK)

Aggghhh!! I can't seem to remember who I saw the last time I saw the show on Broadway. Exact date was January 2, 2003. Grrr.
eponine5

Jeff Nicholson, no question.
2nd is Robert Hunt.
Orestes Fasting

Oh man, I saw one of Pierce Peter Brandt's final performances as Javert and he was awesome. I liked him much better than Rob Hunt.
The Very Angry Woman

Pierce Peter Brandt. He's now involved some odd cult-like organization. I hope he returns to theatre; he was a great Javert.

Quique

I liked Pierce so much more than Robert, as well. I also added Trent Blanton to my list. I had forgotten that I saw him in 2004. I still can't seem to remember who I saw on Broadway in 2003. It's driving me nuts.
BroadwayBeast

Philip Quast...I love the tone of his voice, and i think it really brings out the threatening side of Javert!
Inspector_Javert

Philip Quast and Roger Allam, tie. Both are solid.

And I like Christopher A. Mller, a young german fellow, he's playing in Berlin. You can find him on youtube. In fact, too young for Javert, but he's wonderful - passionate and desperated... And he has a great voice.

Now I've only seen Quast in the TAC and heard Mann on the OBC, but I like Quast better...I found Mann unusually...quiet during soem of the more emotional songs, like Stars, but I guess that's probably because he didn't really need to emote as much.
