1832

Just a little stupid something, but...

Does anyone else sometimes check their computer clock and suddenly when you notice that it's 18:32, you immediately think of Les Miserables?

....
Mademoiselle Lanoire

That exact thing has never happened, but I do have those sorts of moments. For example, a couple weeks ago someone on livejournal announced cheerfully that her husband was about to enter the police force. I had a strong urge to pull out a relevant quote, but instead settled for more generic congratulatory remarks.
Fantine

To me this happens ALL the time.

Not really something like that, but every day (except sunday) at 7:30 I always think of the production of Les Mis that is performing at that very minute..... to think of all the performances that I've missed.......so sad. And if it's after 7:30, I try to figure out which song they are on.

I looked at my alarm clock once and it was 02:45:?? in the morning and I waited and watched it get to 02:46:01.

That amused me at the time. Laughing

I'm sorry... But I don't recognise that time or date... Could you enlighten me please?

I'm not that stupid. I just wondered if there was a connection with Les Mis. But of course it might just as well be random.

Precisely. I was half wondering whether she was being tongue-in-cheek, but apparently not.

Eh, never mind. Once I was finding a picture of every main character from Les Mis for a calendar project at school. I got everyone, including Grantaire, Montparnasse, Bamatabois...... somehow I forgot Cosette. d'oh!
Then I also remembered that there are only 12 months in a year, so I had to cut down anyway......my poor lovely ladies.
Fantine

Ah, now I FINALLY get it. My brain didn't click.

Okay, historically speaking... what happened 1832? They must have picked the date for a reaosn or was it a random thing?

Andy.

The barricade battle is based on an actual battle following the death of General Lamarque in 1832...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Lamarque

"The rioting following his death (on June 5 and June 6) was an action provoked by Bonapartists and republicans. It was suppressed by the Army and National Guard; an estimated 800 were killed or wounded during the conflict. While the violence broke out following the funeral of Lamarque, some modern historians name as its cause other political issues related to the July Revolution, feeling that Lamarque's death was simply a convenient excuse for the rebels. The uprising was of brief duration and failed to spread beyond Paris.

Victor Hugos novel Les Misrables includes a fictional account of the brief uprising which followed General Lamarque's death. The insurrection is a failure in the novel as it was in history, but is romanticized in the novel and its various adaptations for film, radio, and stage. Also in Les Misrables, Hugo views Lamarque as the government's champion of the poor."

Ooh interesting. I didn't know that. Thank you Andrew.

I once did a project on that in school. The task was to make a powerpoint presentation and then present it. Of course, I wrote about the insurrection 'as shown in Les Miserables'. I think I was the only person in the whole class who had problems finding sites that were actually in English!
Victor Hugo actually based the Amis on a real group of students involved in the insurrection, and their real meeting place was near where cafe Musain was meant to be.
