A few questions about the CSRHello,
I know there has been some talk recently about why so many people are asking about the CSR, so I hope nobody minds me asking It's just that I only got my hands on it a few weeks ago...so I'm a "newbie" to it. Now, I know it's a somewhat international cast, and I was wondering if they recorded it together or each recorded wherever they happened to be at the time.
Also, I know that Philip Quast and Anthony Warlow are both quite popular and the Sydney production was apparently quite good...was there ever a Sydney recording done?
Thanks!

Firstly, did you not get the booklet in the CD set? That does explain it all.
But for the record, the orchestra was recorded in London and the tapes mixed to produce the backing track (for want of a better word) this was then carted around the world as such to where they wanted to record the singers.
All brought back to the UK (once Customs released the tapes!) and mixed into that fine recording.

old vs. new bookletsHi Kelly-
If memory serves, there's a big difference between the booklets printed for the CSR in the early '90s and the ones printed today... I just bought a new version of the CD set, and while the booklet has nice color pictures now, they've left out a bunch of the info about the actual process of recording that WAS in the old booklet. Basically, they had several recording sessions-- in London, LA (and New York?) and Sydney, and split the performers between those locations.
As for the Sydney production, the liner notes explain that there was a plan for a Sydney recording (it's even advertised in the Australian Les Miz souvenir brochure!), but it was too costly or whatever. So they did the CSR instead.

The current liner notes (I purchased my copy this year) state that they had recording sessions in London, Nashville, and Australia (Sydney, I think, but I'm not sure).
If the liner notes have changed, I would be interested in seeing the earlier ones. Could you scan them?

I thought that it was mixed in Los Angeles?
They all presumably recorded in wherever their local venue was with, Kaho Shimada who didn't record it in Tokyo travelling to Australia to record at Rhinoceros Studios in Sydney with Anthony Warlow, Philip Quast and (I'd imagine) Debra Byrne.

I wasn't aware of the reprint version. Good to have the colour pics, hope theat they're the same actors but with colour pics. The old black and white ones were a bit pants.

The head-shots of the actors are still black and white. They have production photos as well, but I'm not sure whether they are of the actors on the CD.

Still funny that a local aussie recording wasnt cheaper than travelling around the world for the CSR.

Agreed. They probably could have killed two birds with one stone by using the Sydney company for the CSR.

Not such a good idea. Being an Australian I know the horror of our Jean Valjean. Even though some people hate Gary Morris on the recording they do not know the horror which is.........Rob Guest

No, there is no Australian company. Quast and Warlow are both recorded in their respective roles though.
