Achieving Bedraggled Hair

Hey! I thought maybe some of you guys who have been in Les Mis would know the answer to this.

Is there some good theatre hair supplies that will make the hair look bedgraggled, dirty or sticking up- just generally messy or unwashed or something?

Let me know! Thanks!

Sounds silly, but don't wash it. Even if you want to do something to it - this is much easier with dirty hair!

That'd be perfect if someone was going to be in 'Grease'. Wink

Terrible joke... I know.

they sell hair wax at drugstores. it's perfect for making hair look dirty. you can also tease the person's hair.
Cloudy This Morning

Use LOTS of hair gel on the tips (the last inch or so) so that when it dries, the ends will stay seperated and look very scraggly. I know this from experience. Not because I was in Les Mis, but because something hates me and I had a bad day.

We used bryll cream and back combed it.

Hey thanks guys. I work during the day so I probably couldn't just not wash it with my type of hair.. maybe if I pull it back. But Bryll cream and back combing huh? Sounds good. Out of curiosity- does bryll cream do really awful things to female hair (I guess if I want to achieve this look- I will have to put up with some hair damage) but I was just wondering since I thought it was a male product.

I would love to somehow get my hair like this:

There are a few small pictures that keep changing- but the one of the girl in a brown dress who looks really angry with wild dirty hair. I don't know how realistic that is- Eponine's hair in Les Mis is probably more realistic- but I always liked the crazier look- I always thought it looked more dramatic and angrier.

Okay I put it as my avatar so that everyone could see it hopefully!

You'll just have to wash your hair every night cause it makes it look greasy and it makes your hair smell like a man
The Very Angry Woman

When she played Eponine, Joanna Ampil used to put coconut oil in her hair. (At the time, she was the friend of a friend.) It made it look awful and skeevy on stage, and the upside is that coconut oil is actually good for your hair. You do have to wash it out, of course.

Back combing is tough on the hair but it works for a 'big hair' scuffy look.

Just think Nikki on her exit from the BB house.

This is what I did when I was in Les Mis.
Before the show started I piled my hair in the highest ponytail ever and teased the life out of it until it was a huge pouf! Then I tucked in under a mopcap for factory girl scene and pulled it off for the two second costume change for lovely ladies. For the lovely ladies scene I had a big ponytail pouf, and I also had lots of ribbons and dead flowers in my hair. For the rest of the show, I just let it down and parted it, and it was perfectly unperfect! I just threw a mopcap or a scarf on top.

here's a picture of my hair!
(and this was taken during a rehersal break, I don't make that face on stage!)
