BBC Radio 2's Version

As you all know, BBC Radio 2 are putting a recording of it up at 7:00pm - 8:30pm tonight, October 8th.

I am away this evening at school, and wondering if there will be a podcast of this, or in any way that I will be able to listen to the production again?

Many Thanks.

After the broadcast it should be on the list on the right until next Sunday evening.

Is there anyway to record the show?
convict24601

Aww I wish there was a way we could buy this off of iTunes or someplace. I'm listening to the ending right now (it's a shame I missed the first part.)

I have audacity. How would I record this?
The Very Angry Woman

You'd have to do it as it was playing and make sure you didn't do anything else on the computer that would start a system sound.

(I was about to launch it, but then I realized I deleted my copy.)
olly

You can also use Creative Recorder to record it.
Aimee

I recorded it on my tv onto dvd. Smile

I just finished recordining it Very Happy Thanks, TVAW for the advice. This is going straight to my iPod Smile

The London cast is amazing! You guys are really lucky to have such a great cast.
Vicam

Would anyone who was able to record it be kind enough to send it to me? I'd love to have it to save on my computer but am having computer problems and won't be able to record it.

Thanks!
convict24601

Sure. PM me and we'll work somthing out. (Anybody can ask me. I'd gladly give it to you.) It's a multi track file, so if anybody wants a single track recording then let me know before Saturday Afternoon.

On another note, the second time i listened to the broadcast, I noticed that Hans Peter Jansens has a heavy accent. I didn't pay much attention to it before, but now that I did, it sort of gets in the way of his performance. He is, no doubt a strong Javert.

Is it just me?

He does. He's Belgian.

Although his accent is not as strong as it was when he was Valjean.

The Very Angry Woman, do you happen to have any clips of Hans Peter Janssens playing Jean Valjean? I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks.

Mostly I was irritated by the concert. I'ts very annoying how they had to cut every song in half, it just made it feel rushed. Would it have killed them to do the whole show?

Owen-Jones was ofcourse an excellent Valjean, but has had better performances, he was sometimes slightly over-the-top.

Janssens was vocally an amazing Javert, his accent bugged me a little. I saw him as Valjean and didn't like it very much. He had trouble hitting the notes and his accent was even more bothering.

Jon Lee was horrible.

The narrator really helped the show, though.

Anyway it was a nice concert but should have been alot longer.

The narrator was the Amazing Anthony Andrews from the 1986 Scarlet Pimpernel movie with Ian Mckellen.

I think it was interesting to hear a recording that selected its songs to focus on the plot. But yeah, it did feel very rushed. There were only about four songs which didn't have parts cut out of them, and although the narrator did help I still think it would have left the listeners feeling confused. And they cut out Valjean's Confession, which was their last chance to explain to the people who hadn't seen Les Mis what on earth was going on!
The funniest bits though were:
The narrator pronouncing ABC the English way
Marius speaking "Eponine! You're hurt!"

What do you mean the 'English' way? I'm English, and I pronounce it like the letters: Ay. Bee. Cee. Cafe.

How is the American pronouncement? Or if that is the American one, what is the English one?

Owen-Jones has had far better concerts. He didn't strike me amazing in this concert.

You're right, Janssens is vocally brilliant - I love his rich bass. I don't like his style: he cuts his words / notes, which really annoys me; he doesn't draw them out. Listening to him as Valjean, it strikes me how low his range is for a Valjean.

For instance, when he sings:

"Who am I? 24601!"

The end bit, '24601', normally goes up to a very high note. However, Hans simply sings '24601' all in the same note. Though you can see he has an excellent voice, I don't think it fitted the part of Valjean well, and I think he needs to revise his style for Javert.

What about the French way?

Hugo put it into 'Les Misrables' as a pun. The French pronunciation of ABC sounds the same as 'Abaiss', meaning oppressed or put down.

Although John-Owen-Jones has a wonderful voice, I think that he is the kind of actor that has to be seen on stage to really be appreciated.

As he has such great stage presence, just merely listening to him on the radio doesn't do him justice.

Also, I agree with other comments - the songs were cut too short. As BBC radio 2 were going to broacast for an hour and a half anyway, they might of well have made the programme two hours. Listeners are tuning in for Les Mis no matter how long it is, and the added songs would have made the plot far easier to follow for newcomers to the musical.

Haven't listened to all of it yet, but I'm quite enjoying this version. Cuts don't actually bother me that much, because I can listen to my other cds if I want to listen to the whole thing.
I like the majority of the cast.
I think Sophia Ragavelas' voice suits Eponine much more than Fantine, but I can't really judge till I see her. I loved her as Eponine though.
Very intrigued by the girl playing Eponine... I really want to see her live now.
MrMarius

Love the broadcast of Les Mis. I too think that Sophia was more suited vocally and perhaps physically to the role of Eponine rather than Fantine, but I still was almost reduced to tears listening to her version of I dreamed a Dream.
Sabrina Aloueche is the girl singing for Eponine and has such a good distinctive quality to her voice, its addictive listening! I really enjoyed her vocally as Eponine. Fantastic journey with On My Own. A little fall of rain was beautiful- could this girl be my next fave Eponine!
JoJ is his usual best- think he over used emotion slightly but it is a radio broadcast and not evryone out there nows the story and characters inside out so suppose they appreciated that!
Loved Javert and really liked Simon Bailey, like sabrina he too has a unique quality to his voice. It changes from soft to powerful with each emotion with a really natural flow.
Jon Lee was ok, but I wasn't sold with his performance.
The Thenardiers annoyed me slightly, I know how comical that pair can sound and they really didn't have that comic timing needed IMO.
The ensemble- WOW. Just amazing. The diction and articulation was pot on, and the individual character interjections were 10/10.
I really liked the factory girl and I really liked the Foreman too!
A brill recording from one of the best casts to take les mis into its 21st year!
Etoile

I wish I could listen to it....it doesn't work on my computer.
MrMarius

Etoile, let me know if you want me to send you a downloaded version of the broadcast. You can open and save it to your computer and play it on windows media player. Smile

Same here!
~Hippy_Kitty~

Me to please
eponine5

Yeah...
I would really appreciate it if someone could send me the broadcast too. I tried to record it, but as I happen to have an insanely old radio, I had to use a tape. Of course, being a tape, it stopped recording when it reached the end of the first side, in the middle of the tape. And we all know what song was in the middle of the recording, at the very end of the first act...
