Best Solo Song?

I personally like "On My Own."
The Very Angry Woman

"I Saw Him Once" is not unique to the London cast. It's unique to the London cast recording, however. It has not been peformed -- in London or elsewhere, unless you count Pais Vasco -- since 1985.
Mademoiselle Lanoire

Where's the "none of the above" option?
Da_Dark_Dude

has to be stars
norayouadora

Hey, I'm a teenage girl with a mezzo belt--of course I had to pick "On My Own." I embrace the cheesiness of it. Very Happy
Lazarus (Adam G)

Bring Him Home (the Audience loves high notes) or Stars. (I'm a tenor, but I can pull off Stars with a few modifications).
broadwaybelle22

I love Bring Him Home. I've even attempted to sing it myself, of coarse not when anyone was watching. It's pretty powerful.

And I do have an emotional attachment to On My Own because that was the first song my voice teacher ever had me sing and I sang it at my school's talent show. It wasn't really that great, and it took a year of voice, but I can now hit every last high note in that song with ease, and I plan on singing it at the next talent show to prove how far I have come.

But I voted for Bring Him Home lol
music is my life!!!

i absolutely love on my own and i did Castle on a cloud when i had singing lessons but when i heard the OLC i instantly adored i saw him once
Sweeney Hyde

Stars or Who Am I? I like stars better for me...but I love the line "My sould belongs to God I know I made that bargin long ago. He gave me hope when hope was gone. He gave me strength to journey on." Applause
Eponine93

This is hard.... I want to vote for them all! I love "I Saw Him Once" because it's not that well known, "On My Own" because it really speaks to me and adresses my life. I like "I Dreamed A Dream" for some reason I can't describe.... it's not my favorite song though I love the message yet I am always singing and listening to it. It's like an addiction. ECAET is such a tragic song yet absolutely beautiful.

Overall, I think I like Stars the best though. The background melody, the lyrics, the melody all just click. It's great.
What Is This Feeling?

I really enjoy I Dreamed A Dream, actually... it's a beautiful song...., so it got my vote! Mmm.. I love Fantine.

I had to pick Stars, mostly because of the OLC recording of it. Amazing.

Now now, ain't nothing in the song about being a malnourished street urchin getting whored out to your father's gang.

I never said I didn't like it. It's not a bad song. But when your life feels like that song? That's just sad.

Ya know, that song can mean many things, not just the fact that someone doesn't like you and likes someone else. I mean, we've all felt lonely at some time or another, right?
BroadwayBeast

I would have to say "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables", for a man to think that much about his friends, that really says something. I also really like "Stars" and "Bring Him Home". But wheres "Who Am I"?
EponinesRain

Hrm, I don't know that it's correct to say "best" song b/c each one is very different and unique on its own. So, I'll just say that my favorites would have to be ECET, IDAD, and OMO.

ECET just gets to me every time. The melody is so beautiful, especially during the jump in notation at "And I can hear them now...became their last communion!" I particularly like how Hayden Tee sort of cries out "Oh my friends, my friends, DON'T ASK me!" It's so full of emotion and just breaks my heart. Truly a wonderful piece.

IDAD amazes me lyrically and like OMO, it goes through a series of emotions. Fantine starts off angsty/wistful and then nostalgically remembers, "He slept a summer by my side/ He filled my days with endless wonder!" Most Fantines I've seen begin to smile at that part; that change in expression and emotion is so great. The same complexity seems to reside in OMO. Then again, Eponine is just crazy, so her emotions are all over the place, anyway! But, this really sets a challenge for her actress, I think. To display lonliness, disillusion, wistfulness; it runs a wide gamut of emotions.

So, I think IDAD and OMO are superiorly arranged- emotionally, lyrically, and melodically. Plus, OMO has a really complex and fun piano accompaniment! There are so many eighth and sixteenth notes that it never gets boring! Very Happy

What is this I Saw Him Once (London Cast)? It's certainly not on my version of the OLC; where is this song, and who is it sung by? I may have to go back to the CD and have a look...
olly

Ah, it's in the Love Montage...
Eponine93

Oh, God. I don't get why people can't say "I feel I can relate to On My Own" ect. without people calling them pathetic and asking them if they are street urchins. I'm a teenaged girl. I'm not a popular girl, not an it girl. Look at pics of me in the picture thread. I'm not pretty. I like musicals. I don't watch TV, don't listen to rap and hiphop. Instead, I listen to Les Miserables and watch clips of Miss Saigon on Youtube. I have raging hormones. I have crushes on the first straight theatre guy I meet, but they always like prettier, more talented guys. I spend my evenings when I"m not with my friends and not on the computer at home with my imaginary boyfriend, wondering how the guy I liked dated the rudest girl in the school over me.

I am a teenaged girl.

OF COURSE I'M GOING TO FEEL LIKE I CAN RELATE TO ON MY OWN!

I do find OMO to be kind of a cheesy song, but I do like that it's a song with sentiments lots of people can relate to. I would hope that anyone who says they can relate to it does not really feel like Eponine 100% of the time--in fact, I don't think it's possible, because no one here is "malnourished street urchin getting whored out to your father's gang" (thanks Orestes Fasting, lol). But despite the fact that Eponine's emotions are drawn from experiences that differ greatly from those of the average MT aficionado, I'd say that unrequited love is kind of the theme of the song. Sure, I'm not actually the type to measure my self-worth based on whether or not my crush of the week returns my feelings, but it does indeed make one feel a bit worthless. And practically everyone can relate to that, at least a little bit. Particularly angst-y teenage girls like myself, and--surprise, surprise--that is usually the demographic that chooses OMO as their favorite Les Mis song. Smile

Well, you mean "pathetic"*, but anyway...

See, I don't get this, either. The reason that songs and narratives endure is because they have a universal appeal and can "address" people of multiple contexts. If we run on the same logic, does that mean that only those who have served 19 years in jail, broke parole, and are fugitives can love "Bring Him Home"? That only by-the-book inspectors can appreciate "Stars"? Admit it, the main reason you like these songs is because you can relate to their sentiments and sympathize with the respective characters who sing them.

Sure, it's annoying that all the Eponine fans repeat the same thing: "OMG! That's just like my life!!" and I guess you could say that I'm an Eppybopper, too...but this is more of an issue with the poster's rhetoric than it is about whether or not it's possible for somebody to relate to a song. Like Norayouadora, I think it's more about relating to the sentiments behind the musical piece than it is about relating to the life of the diegetic character.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I like "Bring Him Home", too. Not at first, but it grew on me. I actually like the instrumental version of it, as presented in "The Sewers" for the melody is purty enough. But, I guess you lose the power of the lyrics, then, eh?
Mimi Marquez

Although young Cosette was my first role ever and I hold "Castle on a Cloud" near and dear to my heart, I think "Stars" is the best solo in Les Mis, maybe in musical theater, at least in my opinion. And Terrance Mann singing just makes me get chills. Love it.
Quique

I love "On My Own" for its orchestrations. The new ones = ick.

Though I chose "Bring Him Home" as best overall solo.

Can't beat it.

Javert's Soliloquy (Suicide) is a close second.
Eponine93

Glad to see that "Stars" is leading the poll. Even though I prefer other songs (I Dreamed a Dream or On My Own) for personal reasons, I do love me some "Stars." I think it's very underplayed... you say Bring Him Home or On My Own, and someone instantly thinks Les Mis but I bet a lot of people who have seen the show several times wouldn't even recognize "Stars" as being in Les Mis.

I adore the original London orchestrations. The Broadway ones= sucky.
Orestes Fasting

Eponine93 wrote:

Yeah. Off the top of my head I can only think of three or four spots in the new orchestrations that I actually like; the rest are pretty crappy.
Mara

I have to agree with the other couple of people who have commented on its absence - where is "Who Am I"? It's my absolute favourite, but I also enjoy "Bring Him Home". "On My Own" and "I Dreamed A Dream" are great songs, don't get me wrong, but they've been completely ruined for me because they are sung over and over in eisteddfod competitions.
phantomphan85

Mine's On my Own. I have dreamed of playing Eponine since I was about 7.
reedzee

I chose Bring Him Home. Everytime I listen to it, I get chills.
Jekkienumber24601

I'd actually pick either "What Have I Done" or "Javert's Suicide"
EponineBarker

Quote:

"Bring Him Home" grew on me. I didn't really like it at first. (I didn't really like slow songs.) But after listening to Michael Maguire's rendition of the song, it grew on me, and now I like it.

"On My Own" is still my favorite though. I love the piano arrangement.
Ixius

I must admit that Who Am I?/The Trial jumps out at me first as one of the show's most memorable solo songs, but then I saw this poll, and was torn between Bring Him Home and Stars. Colm Wilkinson's Bring Him Home won it for me.
EponineBarker

I agree with you. Colm's "BHH" is excellent. He's a very good Valjean. (IMHO)
good witch of broadway

I'm a girl, and i love 'on my own'. But for the guys, i would choose 'empty chairs and empty tables'. It is really good, and i think 'stars' is overdone.
EponineBarker

I think 'Stars' is very good, I don't think it's overdone.

What's you favorite version of 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables'? I personally like (now please don't hurt me!) David Bryant's version.
Robin Hood

My favorite is probably The Confrontation from the TAC, it sends chills down my spine whenever I listen to it.

God bless,

That's not a solo...

Well actually, since they are not harmonizing in the song, you could say they were singing solos at the same time. Laughing

But you are right, shame on me for not reading the title. Embarassed In that case my favorite solo is I Saw Him Once.

What do you like about him? I think he was basically trying to go for the same style as Michael Ball, only Michael Ball does it a teeny bit better. Of course, I may be biased, since Michael Ball pracitically dominates all of the English-language recordings and I generally don't go by bootleg.

By any chance, was David Bryant's version the first one you heard? That usually has an effect on the listener...

No. I heard Michael Ball's version first.

I like Michael's version, but after hearing him as Marius on three, count 'em three recordings (OLC, CSR, TAC) I just got tired of him.

So David Bryant is a nice change for me.

The OBC is my favorite cast recording anyway.

Agreed. Agreed. Agreed. Agreed.

Oh my god, Lea's IDAD is just so fabulous. I swear, the whole theatre was dead silent during the entire song. Even the little kids in front of me stopped fidgeting and looking at their watches. I've never felt a closer audience-performer connection than when I was watching her IDAD. It was absolutely breathtaking. She was.... spellbounding in her performance of IDAD. I was sobbing by the second verse.

Lea's IDAD was definitely the most amazing thing I've ever seen onstage.
EponineBarker

And I loved the fact that she was practically crying at the end! It made me wanna cry!

I especially loved her "shame." She escalated up those five notes with no problem!

Personalily for me to sing i would have to choose 'On my own,' as ive sung it so many times but my favirote song in the show is 'Empty chairs and empty tables.' It might have just been the way our Marius sung it but it is gawjus!!! Xxxxxxxx

Hi LMF Smile Always good to see an old friend. I am fine, just very busy and these boards don't interest me that much anymore the way they used to. How are you?

Especially Empty Chairs by MB on the TAC is simply haunting.

ToTheShelterOfMagnolias

Definitely has to be Stars. Seeing Javert open up like that--it's breathtaking.

Although personally I think the vocalist has the ability to make or break a certain song...A bad Eponine might potentially ruin a song for me, if you know what I mean.

I would kill to play Fantine. I'm more of an ensemble person, so the idea of singing two songs then running around in the ensemble for the rest of the show except for a very brief period at the end is immensely appealing to me.
Paula74

Hard question.

I guess my general favorite would be "Bring Him Home" because it's the song that introduced me to Les Miz when I heard it on Michae/EFA holiday benefit at Joe's Pub with it was a wonderful experience.

But, when I saw the musical live for the first time years ago...I really loved "Stars."

My interest in "On My Own" died with my teenage years and, conversely, I appreciate "I Dream A Dream Now."

I absolutely love "Empty Chairs At Empty Tables," but not in the context of the show for no particular reason. But I'll admit to crying my eyes out when Hugh sang it in at a concert last year.

I vote for dog eats dog =D yayyy

'Empty Chairs and Empty Tables' is by far the best solo song, to hear Michael Ball sing that live brought a tear to my eye, it's outstanding Very Happy

Stars for the win, y'all.

It's my favorite song in the entire show. Guh.

GUH.

Yes, "Stars" is gorgeous. Especially with the original orchestrations!
Gargamel

I would say "I dreamed a dream".

But I would (as usual) choose the french concept album version: "Javais rv dune autre vie".
It is quite different, the lyrics are soooooo poetic! Rose Laurens sings it with a desperate rage I never heard since then in that particular song.

Yes, yes and yes.

The London cast recording was my first introduction to Les Mis, and now I'm spoiled by the lovely orchestrations on Stars. I love Stars under any circumstance, even when I'm not too fond of the actor playng Javert.
