Broadway Revival.

I read that this limited time revival is going to probably just become a normal revival and stay. And personally I'd love (with the exception of Daphne Rubin Vega) This new cast and would like to see a broadway revival cd, anyone agree with me?

By your definition, are Roundabout revivals not "normal"?

Which part? If you're talking about casting news, Daphne Rubin-Vega was announced months ago.
Jekkienumber24601

too bad. But yeah I want the recording for the sake of Norm Lewis as Javert Alexander Gimanagi as Valjean (or whatever) Gary Beach as Thenardier and Aaron Lazar as Enjorlas. (great male line up, though Marius could have been better)

I wasn't referring to the casting, I was just getting excited about the idea of Les Mis actually returning to Broadway in the long run.
The Very Angry Woman

I'll bet you anything that while it will extend, a long run is not in its future.
kittengoespop

Very Angry Woman, I just realized that I absolutely adore your avatar.
Colle

I am hoping it will extend at least past the Tony Awards, it would be interesting to see this cast perform. If things go well, I can see it extending. Also, I hope they decide to make a cast recording. While I love and appreicate most the English recordings we have, I am in the mood for something new. Plus, I am interested in hearing this cast. I thought Ali Ewoldt was a great Cosette when I saw her on tour, and she would sound pretty on a recording. Another person I am interested in hearing is Celia Keenan-Bolger as Eponine.
NotoriousFunnt

I just hope it stays long enough for me to get a chance to see it...I'm away at college now and no longer close to Broadway like I used to be, and the breaks I get are not that long. I wanted to go over Thanksgiving break but no luck there, I'm hoping maybe sometime next year I'll get the chance. *crosses fingers* My old high school is having a trip there, go figure, after I finally leave high school they do something good Rolling Eyes

God, am I the only dork out there who thinks Daphne Rubin Vega has a nice voice? If you want to take some wrath out..... What about Adam Jacobs, people? As cute and cuddly as he his, every time he opens his mouth I am forced to grind my teeth.

PS - Sorry, Orestes, I know you like Adam Jacobs. Embarassed
Orestes Fasting

But... but... I just want to hug him and pinch his cheeks!

He probably wouldn't make a good impression on a cast recording. His voice is so nasal. But when I saw him live I didn't care, I just wanted to glomp him.

[Though, re: a revival recording? Guys, there are already somewhere between 25 and 30 official Les Mis recordings out there. Do we really need another one?]

Why, because he sounds like this?

I get the feeling he wouldn't have been cast for the revival had they not been looking to turn it into Les Bennetton.

Are you mad? There can NEVER be enough Les Mis recordings. Razz

Also, TVAW - GREAT. Applause
Orestes Fasting

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have another one widely available, just so we'd get fewer people going "omg Colm Wilkinson is teh best Valjean evar" when all they have to compare him to is Gary Morris. Anything that throws a monkey wrench into the old Warlow vs. Maguire and Lea vs. Frances flamewars is fine by me.

Ah! Now we're on level ground! I hate Adam Jacobs and love Gary Morris. And you (because you're craaaaazy Wink ) like Adam Jacobs and hate Gary Morris.

....and so it begins.
MmeJavert

You know, I can't hate Gary Morris, because the CSR was my first recording. But I don't particularly like him, either. I have a soft spot for Colm 'cause I saw him live and got to talk to him at the stage door. But to be honest? I'm not sure I do have a favourite Valjean. I've heard quite a few good ones.

And I wouldn't mind having another recording, either. Just to have a completely different cast out there, recorded for posterity's sake.
Quique

Awww...TVAW, don't say that! lol.

Adam Jacobs wasn't that bad. In fact, I absolutely LOVED him!

And, yes, he's cute n' cuddly and I'm a straight dude, lol.

I wish to examine that smile of his...it's unreal. Too perfect, lol.

Oh come on people, he's not that cute. So maybe he's got a big ol' grin and a cute face and curly nerd hair. But his voice is more than enough to put me off. And don't even get me started on Joan Almedilla or Melissa Lyons. Blah.

What debate. Warlow kicks ass, lol. I forgot about Drew Sarich as Grantire! COOL STUFF! REALLY WANT A CD PEOPLE! LET'S HOPE WE GET ONE. UNLIKE THOSE POOR PEOPLE IN THE LESTAT FAN CLUB.

I never got to see Adam Jacobs as Marius, but I have listened to some sounds. Except for the first his first few notes, I think Adam does sound good(maybe not great) on ALFOR. Here is a link to some sounds of Adam as Marius:

http://lesmis.cafemusain.com/cast/jacobs.html

In the ALFOR sound, Adam is singing with Melissa Lyons. I wonder how he will sound in that song with Celia Keenan-Bolger.

I love his voice, but Warlow really doesn't sound right in the role to me. I'm not actually that fond of either of them.

I just listened to the clips provided and I like Adam Jacobs. And that's pretty big because I played Marius and I am very picky on the Mariuses I like.

He's no Michael Ball though. Laughing

OK, so you think he's ugly and I'm queer, lol.

No, seriously, I really liked him and could see almost no flaw in his portrayal. The only complaint I had was with his body language - it was a bit stiff and awkward (almost dorky) but that's it.

I thought he had a gorgeous voice and his acting was great. I'm really curious to know what you don't like about him.

I also liked Joan's Fantine.

Not too thrilled about Melissa's Eponine. Mad

Oh, he's attractive, I just don't think he's cuddly.

He also was one of the stupidest Marii I'd ever seen. If I'd never seen Peter Lockyer, Adam would've gotten my Dumb Marius award.

I nearly burst out laughing several times during Valjean's Confession because the lightbulb was going off over his head in such a stupid way.

Valjean: "Who am I?"
Adam!Marius: ...
Valjean: "Who am I?"
Adam!Marius: 0.O "I GET IT NOW!!!!!! YOU'RE JEAN VALJEAN!"

As for his voice, he brayed. His voice was fine until he had to hit a money note.
Quique

I think I know what you mean. Like I said, he was somewhat dorky. I can picture what you're talking about during Valjean's Confession. He would blink his eyes a lot and tilt his head like a confused puppy, but I think that made him endearing.

I got to see Peter's Marius 5 times on Broadway. Apart from the odd machine gun vibrato (something Kevin Kern seemed to imitate when I saw him in 2003) his portrayal was excellent. Though he was phoning it in last time I saw him in it, which was in August, 2002.

Oh, thanks! Glad I'm not just a freak. >_>
Lazarus (Adam G)

Gary Morris sucks on the CSR. His vibrato is just plain annoying, his high notes are weak, and he sucks at acting. Sorry, Cloudy baby, I just can't like Gary Morris.

Colm Wilkinsion is good, but not the best, and Philip Quast is not the greatest Javert. I've always liked Randel Keith as Valjean, and the actor from the 1999 London run who played opposite to JOJ was amazing (can't think of his name off hand).

But then again, I haven't heard as many recordings as you guys have.
Trevor

John Owen Jones is probably my favorite Valjean. He's amazing. I really like Colm too, though. d'oh! Such a hard decision.
Quique

I like JOJ's voice.
NotoriousFunnt

Randal Keith is amazing! I had the luck to see him when the national tour came by my area a few years ago and his Valjean was spectacular. Best portrayal I've ever seen and his voice is just...wow.

I saw Terrence Mann when he came back to Broadway a little while before it left and thought he was fantastic...I've heard a lot of negative reviews of his Broadway return but he was great the night I went, and has always since then held the spot of favorite Javert. I love Philip Quast's "Stars" but I don't know, he's good but not my favorite.

Ohhh, Lazzy-baby! How could you?? Wink

Gary Morris isn't my favorite (but I do like his his voice better than Colm's (at least he doesn't sound like he's about to cry or die everytime he opens his mouth)) but I think he's severely underrated. Poor Gary. However, I'd ditch him in an instant for Pedro or Tommy.

I saw Randal Keith back in January. He was good.

As for Philip Quast... Have you been to the Javert communities on Livejournal recently? I've uploaded a buttload of 'Javert's Suicide's to try and get people to unravel themselves from Philip Quast. So far I've used the javert_fans and do_me_javert communities. Feel free to go get some free clips anyone.

(PS - Lazzy, have you heard Pedro Ruy Blas or Tommy Krberg? They are love. If you haven't, PM me. Wink )
NotoriousFunnt

I've only seen on stage Terrence Mann and Stephen Tewksbury, and TM was awesome...Stephen was okay, perhaps I just saw him on an off day because his singing was good but he didn't seem to get into his "groove" until the Suicide, did a marvelous Suicide though. But yeah so many mizzies are hardcore Quast fans, it was really kind of scary when I was heavily into the fandom a few years ago and they'd be all RARRGH you're a TM fan RARRGH and I was all, o_OWTF? Yes...I like TM...PQ is good too...I just happen to like TM better.

Look forward to the revival for many reasons, one of which so I can compare Javerts Smile

I'm looking forward to the revival as well, I've got tickets, and I'm curious how the new valjean will do, haven't heard of him, but still excited to be going.

To The Very Angry Woman. Forgive me if you don't want to say, but I've always been curious since the first time I saw your signature. Was there every a The Very Angry Man? When was he a member? Was he affilliated with you in any way? And why has he stopped coming here?

If these are personal questions, then just say you don't want to answer them; I don't know anything about it. It's just that it has been itching my curiosity for some time now. Thank you.

The Very Angry Man was actually posting here before I was. I wouldn't be named TVAW if there hadn't been a TVAM first.

He doesn't post here anymore, mostly because at the time he stopped he'd just started a new job (and then I think he realized he didn't miss the place so much) but I still keep in regular contact with him.

Broadway Revival

Saw the Nov 19 performance. The show was wonderful with the exception of Daphne Rubin-Vega. She ruined the role of Fantine. Wrong look, wrong voice.

The Confrontation is awesome. Now Valjean & Javert face each other in battle while rotating around the stage. Much better than having them on opposite ends of the stage facing the audience.

yeah them facing the audience was only in the concert. But the revial way is alot more tense. We actually got Javert taking a swing at him with his baton while they're singing.

Good, I'll remember to put the Capoeira-tastic Norm Lewis action figure on my Amazon wish list!
Jekkienumber24601

Wouldn't Les Miserables action figures be awesome? Valjean & Fantine set with bed breakable chair. $20.00 Javert with complete bridge set (featuring catapult action)

Enjorlas with barricade and flag waving action $50.00

Eponine with whining action $2.00

Student pack $40.00 (includes Couyferac, Combfere, Fueily, Grantaire, & Legles. Tables and red cloths sold seperatly)

I'm all for an Eponine with removable teeth.

Broadway Revival

Here are some little differences I noticed (I'm sure there are more that I didn't notice or remember):

In "Stars", instead of singing "And so it has been and so it's written...", Norm Lewis sings "And so it must be and so it's written..."

In "Who Am I", the second time Alexander Gemignani says "If I speak.." he changes "I am condemned" to "they are condemned".

The Plumet Attack scene has been shortened. Claquesous' "What a palaver...pick a bone in the street", Brujon's "Not a sound out ot you" & Eponine's "Well, I told you I'd do it..." lines are out.

Fantine's "Come To Me" death scene has been shortened. Two verses are merged into one. Now it goes "Come to me, Cosette, the light is dying, don't you hear the winter wind...".

Those two scenes were changed in late 2000 as part of the Broadway overtime cuts and are not unique to the revival.

Well Philip Quast was the master of changing lyrics "must be" instead of "has been" "falling from god, falling from grace" instead of "falling from grace, falling from grace" "I will join these little school boys" instead of "We'll be ready for these school boys" So the stars thing isn't new.

Who am I seems new, but it does make more sense.

Plummet Attack seems like the student version

Same with Come to Me
Trevor

Haha I only listen to the recordings with Philip Quast as Javert so I didn't even realize that he was changing the lyrics. I like his better.
Orestes Fasting

Well, "Cosette, the light is dying" is new. Thank god they changed that, even if they kept the cut in.

Valjean also, quite sensibly, tells the constables to take Fantine to the hospital after "I will see it done!"
Eponine93

I LOVE that clip... except for Daphne Rubin-Vega, that was amazing. The energy coming from it was so amazing. All I've seen of the revival is that one clip and by the time it was over, there were tears in my eyes.

I think one of the greatest things about the revival is how it appeals to younger people. I'm a teenager and when Les Miz was on Broadway the first time I was too young to see it (well, I could have gone but even at the end of its run, I wouldn't have understood it.) Now I have to work on convincing a mother who saw the show 3 times to take me to see it one more time.

Thanks so much to whoever posted that clip.

I like all of the changes better except for the one in "One Day More"

He already has a verse saying "I will join these people's heroes, I will follow where they go, I will learn their little secrets, I will know the things they know"

So changing We'll be ready to I will join was not needed. And for some reason the "We'll be ready for these schoolboys" sounds better
UniquePerspective

Plumet Attack, I believe is done EXACTLY like the school edition.

Haha I only listen to the recordings with Philip Quast as Javert so I didn't even realize that he was changing the lyrics. I like his better.

I like them both. Whichever the Javert chooses to use is fine by me. They both work fine. "I will join" works fine because Javert is probably the least heard of all the people singing during that counter-singing section. I didn't even know what his lyrics were. I can only hear the Thenardiers and Marius mostly. Marius mostly (but probably because I played him. lol)

Broadway Revival

I seem to recall in previous performances that after singing "Who Am I" Valjean tells Javert that he will find him at the hospital. In the revival he says nothing, and the scene just changes to Fantine in the hospital. Anyone who hasn't seen the show before must be wondering why Valjean wasn't taken into custody already.
