CeLes Miserabrities (Les Mis Stunt Casting)

It's only going to be a matter of time until Les Mis descends to stunt casting for some of its roles. Who would be at least palatable, if not preferable, in these parts?

I always wanted to see Bonnie Tyler as Fantine, as her Total Eclipse of the Heart kind of reminded me of I Dreamed A Dream at times.

Would that time be 1992 by any chance?

I vaguely recall Ricky Martin being cast as Marius at one point, I'm not sure when that was however.

Before he became famous.

Which famous person was cast in 1992?

Debbie Gibson.

I was about to say, LOL...he was really just another pretty boy with a decent voice, at that point.

Debbie Gibson.

You mean Electric Youth Debbie "it's Deborah" Gibson? Hehehehehe...who did she play and how did she fair (not well I assume)

That being said, I'd like to see Nicole Kidman give Fantine a shot (we know she can can sing pretty decently)

Gerard Way, emo frontman with a theater fetish, would be an unusual but decent Enjolras. Especially since he gets to die.

Eponine - I remember one of my friends storming into class and screaming how unfair it was that Debbie Gibson was cast in HIS dream role.

I don't know how good or bad she was, though...I saw her in a Broadway benefit concert last year and I wasn't too impressed. Her voice was nice, but thin and she was putting more emphasis on being perky than really singing.

I forgot about Debbie Gibson. I still can't see why they hired her. Confused

I'd like to see Josh Groban as Marius though, I know he can't really act, but I'd still like to see it.

But can you imagine what the stage door would be like? Josh Groban isn't really my cup of tea, but I don't dislike him either...but I get a lot of invites to Groban fan groups on MySpace and those kids can be a little...hyper.

I can imagine how they'd react to seeing him as Marius...

Don't forget:

Catherine Hickland as Fantine (Broadway, 1995)
Shanice as Eponine (Broadway, 1995)
Jon Lee from S Club 7 as Marius (West End 2003/4 2006/7)

In fairness, I believe that Ricky Martin was fairly well known amongst Latin-American/Spanish speaking audiences, and had a recurring role on a soap, so he probably was, to a degree stunt casting at the time.

Isn't is true that Ashley Tisdale played Little Cosette?

Yes, on the Third National Tour and on Broadway between 1993 and 1995. She was known as Ashley Michelle Tisdale then.

I've been led to believe that this is her with Frederick C. Inkley as Valjean.
Monsieur D'Arque

Yup, that's her peculiar nose and cheekbone structure there. Yuppers.
mastachen

I've always thought she wasn't naturally blonde.

Well, I don't know any of the famous people you are talking about, so I have no opinion. Well, yes, I know Nicole Kidman, of course, but she just a tiny voice, there is no way she could handle Fantine, so I don't count her (although, after Daphne Rubin-Vega anything is possible).

I don't know about Ricky Martin. I know he was quite famous in Mexico when he was a teenager, but at least in Europe we didn't knew him at the time, so I don't know if he could be considered stunt casting.
In Madrid, we had Carlos Marin from Il Divo playing Marius, too. But nobody knew him back then, so he doesn't count either.
Quique

Ricky Martin was a huge star in Mexico and Puerto Rico, often selling out stadium concerts at the time. He was known in America mostly from his stint on General Hospital.

Debbie Gibson was quite well known when she did Eponine back in 1992.

Catherine Hickland was a known soap star when she appeard as Fantine on Broadway.

Gloria Estefan was cast as Fantine back in 1995, but dropped out due to a pregnancy.

I actually saw her in the role. I went on a class trip to see LES MIS in 1992 and because Debbie Gibson had gone to my school we had this big talkback with the actors afterwards. I really don't remember any specifics, as I was 10 at the time, but I loved the show and listened to the cast album over and over afterwards.
EponineMNFF

I saw Debbie Gibson performing On My Own in a duet version of On My Own and I Dreamed a Dream for a Breast Cancer Research benefit called What a Pair.

I was really unimpressed. I guess my expectations were too high.
