Claude-Michel Schonberg doesn't notateHaving learned musical notation at the age of 4, I can't imagine writing or reading music without it. How is it possible to write a score as complex as Les Mis (and Miss Saigon) without being able to write it down? Is he very dependent on his orchestrators? especially for the contrapuntal bits?
That's no criticism, the score is great whoever wrote it.

Schnberg can still play complex music, even if he can't write it down. From what I've read in 'The Musical World of Boublil and Schnberg', he simply plays his music straight onto the piano and works on it from memory until it's ready to be recorded and someone else can write it down.

I guess you must be right - it interested me because his scores are quite complex and have sophisticated harmonies, and I can't imagine being able to do it without having something written down on paper or on screen.
(but then again if I could do it at all, I'd be rich...)
