Daphne and FrancesBoth slagged off constantly. I on the other hand love both women's interpretaion of their respective character, so tell me people why? Why so much hate? Why are actresses not allowed to be a little more brutal with their singing, which in my opinion is more reflective of real life.
Frances as Eponine for instance: her voice in its whinny and harsh state allows Cossette to sore and sound enchanting. This makes the audience feel even more sorrow for eponine's despearte plight. Genious. I for one love her.
Daphne (she might be a different kettel of fish live) but the clips i've seen of her astound me. What a brave woman to do something different with a character that is so often played "beautifully" by which i mean an untouched virign. (YEAH RIGHT!! She has a child!) Daphne plays her along the lines of what the original creators wanted. In the french concept album in which Fantine sang "L'Air De La Misere" a song which was meant to optimise the whole musical. Bitterness and distress is what i think of when i think of Fantine. This is excellently captured by Daphne.
Now people of Musicals.net the floor is yours...

I don't think Frances' voice is whiney at all.
Why can't anyone get past her high pitched voice and, for once, listen to her interpretation? It boggles the mind.
Anyway, I respect everyone's opinions. But, to me, Frances is a great Eponine.
As for Daphne, I like what I've heard, though haven't seen her onstage yet.

Quique thank you for your support i'm gald i'm not alone. It's just sometimes drifting around this board i seem to be the only one who thinks these two are two of the greatest things to have happened to the show.

I'd have to agree with certain opinions that Daphne's voice doesn't fit in with the rest of the cast - but I don't think that's a bad thing.
Fantine is an outcast. It suits the role well and it's kinda ironic (and sort of sad) that Daphne is an 'outcast' of sorts. Perfect, if you ask me.
As for Frances...she portrays an Eponine with balls.
The End.

I appreciate Daphne's willingness to take the role in a different direction, but her interpretation just doesn't seem right for the role of Fantine. Eponine, maybe, but not Fantine, who despite her youthful mistake remains virtuous and beautiful even in her desperation. Daphne's harsher take on the character would suit Eponine better.
And then there's the matter of Daphne's singing, which I just dislike. She sounds like she's hurting her voice, which is painful for me as a singer to listen to.
Frances, though... Frances I like, and I think that there wouldn't be as much virulent hate against her if not for the millions of fangirls eager to assert Lea Salonga's total dominance over the role of Eponine.

Because ideally, one shouldn't "have to get past" anything to appreciate another aspect of a performance. If something appears to be a barrier to enjoyment, then it is.

Frances Ruffle has one of the single most annoying voices i ever heard.. i want to punch her out everytime i hear it.
she is even more annoying than Kristen Chenoweth or Elaine Paige.

Timmy...I don't think anybody really "hate" either. The word might be used, but i bet only in a figurative way.
Furthermore, i don't believe Frances is that disliked. You will find endless amount of people, who prefer her Eponine. I dare to say that she will win a vote for Favourite Eponine (Or at least very close second). So, i think your point is not really valid.
Personally, i am not fond of her voice. I just don't like it. It is whinny to me. With time i came to like her voice more, and i think she is much better in live performances, but still, i prefer Lea's voice.
I can't comment on Daphne, because the clip i saw was brief, and i haven't seen her live.

You weren't around for the Frances vs. Lea fights on Le Caf that raged on from 1997 to 1998, and then sprung up every 7 or 8 months thereafter, were you?

TVAW....No, i wasn't there, but a whole year! .
In 1997/1998 i was just discovering the Internet, let alone the musicals.
My history with musicals started when i first saw "Les Miserables" in October 2001.
This discussion will never go away, and it is fun, and enjoyable if it is done in moderation and good nature.
I don't understand why so many people want the others to like the same things they do. Don't they realise that if we all loved the same things it would be dead boring.

I can definitely see how people can find Daphne's voice unappealing. So that really isn't a mystery to me. I have no problem with the people who take the time to at least briefly explain why they dislike her instead of just bashing her as a person. The same thing goes with Frances.
Tell me about it! The old Le Cafe discussions were very amusing. I miss them! We were a most dysfunctional group.

Well, that was the first year lesmis.com was up and running, so anything and everything -- mainly about the relatively recent TAC -- was discussed. Lea and Frances were the most prominent actresses in an extremely popular role, so naturally they were the most debated.

The whole Lea-Frances debate reminds me of something totally off-topic. I have Fitness (which is like health only less interesting) in a sixth grade classroom. All of the sixth graders got to make posters for all sorts of random things and hang them around the room. I was just randomly looking around the room and all of a sudden I see in big letters: "LEA SALONGA." Let's just say I really didn't expect to see that.
The person who made the poster had done "The Making of Aladdin," with little bios of the speaking and singing voices of Aladdin and Jasmine. These bios included pictures. I was looking at Lea's picture. Something looked VERY wrong. As in, she wasn't Asian.
Then I looked closer. The person must have googled Lea and not paid attention to the picture. It wasn't Lea. It was Frances.
