Daphne Rubin Vega as Fantine

I know this one has prob been discussed to death but I am too lazy to search.

Am I the only one who thought she was pretty damn good in this role? I mean her voice has always been an acquired taste but she acted the hell out of this role.

Thoughts?

I've heard a lot of pan of it,but it really wasn't bad. Probably just different from what people are used to. Really though, Daphne Rubin Vega's voice more of a rough sound than other Fantine's,but really,if you lived a miserable life of the poor all of your life, then you would probably be more rough around the edges.

Uughhh. I couldn't stand her when I saw her live. The little girl next to me ACTUALLY said, "God help me," when Fantine came back onstage for the finale. That girl was pretty spunky, though. She was making fun of me for crying. Laughing

I thought she indicated her way through the role, especially during IDAD. It was the first time I was happy that Fantine died.

From what I've heard and seen, her voice didn't bother me but she was a bit stiff in the role. I didn't hate her Fantine, but I agree she was miscast.

She is not a Fantine. She's a pretty solid performer, but not of a Fantine type. More like a Mimi Marquez, I think. Has she ever been cast in that role? Mr. Green lol

But I thought Lea Salonga's Fantine was glorious. It was even better than her Eponine, then again, I never really saw her as an Eponine. She ALWAYS seemed more suited to Fantine for me, even before she played the part.

This might sound too close-minded, but her voice (Shocked) was one of those things I could never really get past. I don't think she's a Fantine, that's all. Fantine is, true, rough around the edges because of the hand she was dealt, but I think that underneath her hardened exterior, she's still the beautiful, pure girl she was before cosette's father + countless other bad things, I don't think that came through with DRV.

Looking past her voice, it seemed to me like she didn't quite know what to do with the role. She did a lot of emoting, but it never pulled together into a cohesive interpretation.

Her voice... love it or hate it. I happened to dislike it, but looking back on it the biggest problem was that she was so out of place. For all the attempts to make the production "new and different," everyone else had pretty classic Broadway voices, so Daphne stuck out like a sore thumb. Maybe in a show with a really unconventional cast I would've liked her more.

Am I the only one who got the impression that casting Daphne was an attempt to hearken back to Rose Laurens on the OFC? Not that it worked, but that's the only way I can understand why she was cast.

From what I heard of the rumors floating around during 3NT closing/revival casting, that sort of was their reasoning -- more of an OFC and "rock" sound. Hence, Drew Sarich.

to add on to my overall opinion, she was ok, there have been better.
DontDoSadnessxx

she made me want to leave the theatre.

I couldn't wait to see her dead. She was simply painful. I dislike her voice, I dislike her acting, and for someone who wasn't even singing it is surprising how many times she was out of tune.

The only good thing about her Fantine: I sing like a wild cat whose tail is being stepped on. And she made me hope that I could get cast on a broadway show.

Nothing about her suits Fantine's character- her vocal style, her physical appearance, her acting choices. She should just stick to more contemporary musical theatre, and even then I am not too crazy about her. However, that is another story.

oh its just so.. not good.
infact, its awful.

she's not fantine!!
What Is This Feeling?

I saw Daphne live, at the time I actualy went along with what everyone said "she sucked". But now remembering, she really didn't. She was fine actually. She definately gets way too much butchering by fans that's for sure.
lesmisloony

Wait, so you saw her and thought she was awful, but one day months later you awoke thinking she was fine?
What Is This Feeling?

Well, ok I guess that sounds really ridiculous; but it is true. Most of my friends who I saw the reviva lwith were like "Oh my God! She sucked." I thought she was fine, maybe even a little bit above average. However, I didn't really think she was extraordinary. Now ,as I look back she really wasn't that bad at all. I do think she is over-bashed. Her Fantine was very assertive. Oner of the toughest. She played her assertive, almost agressive. When Bamatabois strikes her, her Fantine threw him across the stage, an vigourously clawed at his face. I Dreamed a Dream almost seemed too emotional for her Fantine, because she played her so strong. I believe the reason why most people dislike her is because she left so early to do an off off broadway production. And Daphne has this " F you" sorta attitude. Sometimes she acts quite unproffesional during interviews. And she can sound undeducated. So I hope this clears things up. If not ,I'll try to further elaborate.
music is my life!!!

I've seen her on youtube, and her acting is very good, but her voice doesn't quite seem to fit... maybe a better Eponine
Yakko

As Eponine? oh yeah right she can never be that role!

That's interesting.
So, the reason why so many people disliked her from the moment she started playing Fantine was that several moths afterwards she was going to leave to do another show (even if nodody had anounced it back then). Psychic Broadway audience!

And to think that all this time I've been hating her Fantine simply because her acting was atroucious, she had no voice, and, oh, yes SHE WASN'T EVEN ABLE TO SING IN TUNE!!!

They announced she would be doing that show before she was in Les Miz.

Daphne? Uneducated? If you go to playbill.com and read some of interviews with her from when the revival was opening, she talks at length about the Fantine character. She sounded very intelligent. imho.

As for her actual performance, I liked her "I Dreamed a Dream" and thought she did everything well enough except in "Fantine's Arrest". Her "you let your foreman send me away!" was pretty bad, I'm sorry to say as a big Daphne fan.
