Did I screw up my callback??

d'oh!
So, I had a callback yesterday for ensemble in Les Mis for a professional group. It is the first time I have auditioned for this group and I was pretty excited to get a callback. We prepared parts of People Sing, Lovely Ladies, and Turning. A few days ago, I took a musical theatre master class with a director etc from NYC. She really liked me and mentioned to the musical director, whom she knows, her thoughts which likely included that I should be called back for a lead - which is sweet - but I would be happy with ensemble because I am non-equity and LOVE this show. I know that a professional actress in the class who is friends with the music director also mentioned that I did an awesome job singing I Dreamed a Dream in the class. When I went in, the music director said he was looking at my resume and then said they would get me to sing the 3 songs they had asked me to prepare 1st. I definitely got the feeling there had been some sort of discussion which got me really nervous. People Sing was first - he wanted it belted which was not how I had prepared it. I did belt most of it - except the higher part at the end- But I was so nervous I forgot to breathe and the end I was really running out of breath - UGHHHH - music director smiled and said something I did not hear. He asked me to belt a specific part of the song - which I did. He asked how high I can belt, which is an F and he seemed impressed. Then Lovely Ladies - went fine - cannot remember much. Then Turning - the director said to do it sweet - which I think I did - by this point my mouth was soooo dry - I sang it ok but it just didn't sound as good as I had practiced. I only sang a about 1/3 of the page we had been given. Then he had me do scales for soprano range - by this point, top lip is stuck to upper teeth - but I pretended to smile and went pretty high - could have gone higher but he stopped - again not as free and lush as I do - but okay. The music director then looked at the director, and the director said excellent and thank-you. With all 3 songs I tried to act as much as possible. But the 2 women who went in before me, have such amazingly strong belty voices. One also only sang part of the last song. The second sang the whole thing. But she seemed to not be as comfy with the higher stuff. WHAT DOES this all mean? Would he have said excellent if he didn't mean it? After my first audition which was the last 32 bars of Vanilla Ice Cream, he said super, but it just felt ok. I was so depressed afterwards when I walked out I felt like crying. I felt like I had let everyone down. Were they thinking of asking me to sing Dreamed a Dream and changed their minds? Or would they not spring that on me in any case? This group can take months for auditions. I just hope and pray this is not the end for me. I pray they are looking for more than just voice and that even though the others may have sounded amazing, I tried to give the songs more meaning. I want to do this show so badly it hurts.

Well, you did say that by now they've heard some incredibly positive things about you. So there's a good start. First of all, I'm sure it wasn't as bad as you thought it was. Also, the director knows that auditions are extremely stressful and some people might not have prepared to belt. From everything you've said, I think you're in a pretty good position overall. I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Smile

Let us know what happens!

All there is to do now is RELAX.

It's in their hands now,
pray,
or write a story,
or go to the park.

Don't let them attack you, though.

Cause, seriously...ducks can be scary.

Ducks are pretty harmless, but oh man, never get between a Canada goose and its babies.

And swans. I've been menaced by a swan before and it's not fun, although it's kind of amusing in retrospect.
christinadaae

But swans are so pretty!
mastachen

It's always the pretty ones that are bitchy.

Generally.

lol
EponineMNFF

Don't even go close to a goose. They're the worst.
Catherine

I love ducks. They're pretty.

Swans and Canadian geese are scaryyy
thegirlfromack

Don't they use swans and geese as attack dogs in Scottland?

Anyway, I don't think you blew your audition. It is hard to tell what the directors are thinking ALL the time. However, my definition of blowing it is not giving your best effort, it sounds like you deffinitely did try your best. And it is a plus that people have so much faith in you as a musical performer, which is awesome and you should feel proud of that eventhough this director may or may not agree.
oxSourPatchRooxo

Lol ducks and geese aside, youre audition sounds like it went better than you think it did. And look on the bright side: if you didnt get the lead role you were after, dont take it personally, because it doesnt mean ur not good, maybe they thought u werent quite ready or found someone who was closer to what they were looking for, and at least u'll still be in the show!!
Good luck, and dont get embittered cuz it can totally ruin a performance trust me i know lol Smile

I hate when geese or ducks cross the road. You sit there for five minutes honking the car horn, and they stop and look at you/walk slower.

Don't know about everywhere else, but you are fined in my town if you hit a duck and are caught. Keeping in mind that this is the same town that made a law about not feeding the ducks. They say it attracts too many...

As for your role, don't sweat it. You obviously tried your best. Sometimes you just might not be what they are looking for. Either way, you get to be in an amazing show, even if you just get chorus.

I think I love you.

So I totally read this thread from start to finish and saw how off topic it got and laughed for about ten minutes. This is the reason why I LOVE this site =DDD

Good luck 'ponine! From one current les mis girl to another =]

A swan attacked my sister when she was little.

Good luck with the callback! There's really not much you can do about it now... so just hope that everything works out nicely!
lesmisloony

A swan attacked my grandma one time. A swan that lived at her old folks' home.

(It... it was kind of funny. Later. We laugh about it now...)
lottielou22

One time we were tubing on a lake and our tube hit a... swanling? Do baby swans actually have an official name?

I think I prefer swanling...

Mynd you, gse bites Kan be pretty nasti...

^I think you just made my day! Laughing

Anyway, I wouldn't worry. I was once convinced that I screwed up an audition really badly. But I got in anyway. In my experience, you generally think you did worse than you actually did.

What, was she carving her name into it with a sharpened toothbrush or something??
musictheatre00

All I can imagine from this topic is someone who worked extremely hard in a callback and gave it her all. I would just relax, callbacks are always so confusing, you never know what they're thinking. So just be happy, you deserve it! Mr. Green
lottielou22

What part did you end up getting?
xojewelzox31

you probably did much better than you thought Smile it seemed like he wanted to see howd u do with a lot of songs. if he thought you didn't have potential he probably wouldn't have asked you to sing more songs anyways. and what part did you end up getting?? (:
CabaretGirl

I'd really like to know how it turned out, finally? What part did you get? Is the show over yet?

(And as for my contribution to the off-topicness... I was bitten by a duck when I was about 7. At the zoo. In front of my whole family.)
princesswanabe

this is really funny, I just had a discussion about swans and geese and such in my music theory class. We listend to a piece based on swans and one of the kids in my class said, "yeah swans seem pretty, but really they're incredibley nasty. They'll attack you and you can really get hurt."
The my teacher said something about how geese are the absolute worst and he randomly blurts out "Geese can just DIE!" lol Shocked
