Empty Chirs...Audition song or no?>

Would you consider Empty Chairs a good audition piece for a community theatre show that is really Depressing? Let me know before i make a fool of myslef.
The Very Angry Woman

It's overdone.
Aimee

I'd say its too depressing too actually. My advice is to think of something else. Smile Good luck though.
Cloudy This Morning

It is a bit overdone (okay, more than a bit), but I guess it shows range pretty nicely, if you're a good baritone.

On the other hand...

This is incredibly shameless, but I need a Marius here : http://z8.invisionfree.com/Les_Miserables_CSWR/index.php

O_< So if you're interested in being Marius (and have recording equipment) do swing by.

If you were to do it, I would do Empty Chairs Wink

What show are you auditioning for?

Depressing is a general word that comes to shows. Is it mildly sad, sort of depressing, throw yourself under a bus depressing or Les Miserables Miss Saigon depressing?

Once we know what show and how depressing it is, then we can give you a better opinion.

I don't like the use of the word 'depressing' to describe Empty Chairs (or indeed ANY of the songs from Les Mis) - "moving" is a much more appropriate word.
As a Musical Director I often hear songs from Les Mis being auditioned, and personally I think it is a good song to audition. It requires a large vocal range (low A to high G), a large range of volume (from very soft to very strong), and to perform it well, it requires excellent acting skills.
Personally I dont think it matters what show it is your auditioning for, if you can perform Empty Chairs well, then it will show your voice off and give the Director/Musical Director a good idea of you abilities. Good Luck!!

it is incredibly overdone, i take it u r baritone? i wud try maybe looking at "lost in the darkness" (jekyll and hyde) or "if i sing" (closer than ever), they are very similar to empty chairs and are not as overdone, just a thought. Smile

Actually, that song is one of the songs asked for at the male audition to the musical course at the ballet academy in Gothenburg this year...
So - There are at least somebody who thinks it's a good idea to do that song Smile

I would do something a little more uptempo...although you are auditioning for a depressing show, a piece like "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" can sort of hide your acting abilities, and acting skills is most likely what the judges are looking for. However, this is just what I think...you really need to do what you think is appropriate.
