Enjolras vs. MariusWho do you like better?

Why do I have the feeling Marius is about to get a good solid ass-whooping?
Really, the only character vs. character poll that'd be even remotely close would be Enjolras vs. Eponine. (And that is not a pairing suggestion!)

I know that's not a pairing suggestion. But I'd thought I'd ask because I saw that there was a huge Eponine vs. Cosette debate a while ago and I'd thought I'd ask about these guys becuase if you look at the Character Elemination Game Thread, they're the two highest ranking out of everyone.

Well, they are both vital to the story! But, Enjorales definately gets my vote!

I've never seen that one before. *adds it to the list*

Enjolras may seem a background character, but he really is the heart and soul of Les Miserables. Him hands down!

I may be a shameless Enjolras fangirl, but even I think you're cracked in the head if you think he represents the soul of the story more than Valjean does.

I think Enjorlas has so much more personality than Marius. Sure, Marius is very important to the story but Enjorlas represents why the students are fighting, the spirit of rebellion, the spirit of things worth dying for. Marius is more of la-de-dahing around in love. Also, Enjorlas has a lot of fangirls because he's a manly man, a character usually played by an actor with a very impressive, manly voice. A lot of fangirls find him sexy, where they find Marius as more of a loser. Also, Marius is taken.
Finally, I believe the character of Enjorlas gives an actor more oppertunity to show off his voice and acting skills. Marius has more songs and lines, yet Marius's part isn't as intense as Enjorlas. And most girls can't resist a good singer.
And that is why any good, shallow fangirl like me wholeheartidly prefers Enjorlas over Marius.
Besides..... have you seen Aaron Lazar's face? How can you NOT vote for him?

Maybe I haven't seen a good Enjolras yet, but I've always thought Marius had more depth, at least in the musical. Enjolras tends to be portrayed very one-dimensionally. Marius has to deal with conflicting feelings about identity and loyalty whereas Enjolras doesn't really deal with any character conflict.

I like Marius a lot better than Enjolras, mostly because of his song ECAET. I don't think Enjolras gets as good a song, and I never really connected with his character.

music is my life!!!

although he's soppy, marius cares more for his friends than anything else (which is why he goes to the barricades in the first place)

Oh, so that's who that violet-eyed, raven-haired, alabaster-skinned chick was that I saw wandering around the Place Saint-Michel the other day. She seemed to be looking for someone called Enjorlas.

Yeah, just an hour before, she had pulled Jarvet out of the river and seduced him back to life.

Enjolras all the way baby. Enjolras is a sexy waffle to put it in the words of a brilliant friend of mine. Marius is ok, but Enjy holds the students together.

That may be, but I doubt Enjolras would care so much for romance as Marius does...unless you live in the world of fanfic where Valjean and Javert's conflicts with each other are merely subtle hints of their sexual tension; yes, they secretly want each other.
Back to the point.

Enjolras doesn't develop much as a character in the musical, so I agree with you on that. But damnit, he is just so sexy. So I choose Enjolras. /submission to inner fangirl

Definetly Enjolras:) He has the spirit, the looks and the songs. A little bit obsessed with his revolution, but men must have a goal in life
He's a more manly man than Marius, though I have nothing against the calmer sort. Enjy is just cooler:)

I agree with Orestes Fasting. In the book, Enjolras isn't really a "manly-man"

Ok, Musical Enjorlas is a manly man. I haven't read the book yet (my mom hasn't found her copy yet ) so I can't really say but there are a lot of factors in the musical that make him very much a manly man.
I think we need to make a credo on the forum when people are talking about the character unless they say so, they're talking about musical characters. From what I know about the book, book characters and musical characters are a bit different. So in order to avoid confusion, I think we should all mention the book if we're talking book wise. I'd like for the fact that we're all talking musical-wise to be taken for granted, but unfortunately I can't always be sure, even though this is a musical site.
It's wierd, though. I've seen interviews with Aaron Lazar saying he really referenced the book for character motivation, notes, ect. Though I haven't seen him onstage in the revival yet (going in March to see Lea Salonga) from what I can tell from the clips I've seen and just the pictures, he is playing up the manly man thing just as much as any Enjorlas.

I can see where Aaron is referencing the book. Enjolras in the book is described at various points as youthful, angelically beautiful, cold, fanatical, sad, severe--Aaron might not look as feminine as book!Enjolras is supposed to, but he's definitely drawing on the solemnity and reserve of the literary version of his character. Most musical!Enjolrati seem to look to the brash Maguire prototype of the character, but Aaron doesn't do that so much.
(And pssst, it's EnjoLRas, not EnjoRLas.)

It's hard to NOT play it that way, when you consider how the role is written in the musical. You don't find a lot of baritone roles in musical theatre in general who are not big ol' manly men.
P.S. It's spelled Enjolras. The L comes first. I wouldn't have cared, but you did it twice in the same post.

Yeah, I realize that. I think I'm suffering from Les-Mis characters dyslexia. Otherwise, I can read several levels above my grade level. I've been reading "Enjolras" and "Enjorlas" from as long as I've been a fan of Les Mis. And spelling it like that too.
I am so dumb. I deserved to be kicked out of the Les Mis fandom, or at least the Enjy is hot fangirl fandom. Sorry, Enjolras.

Even a descriptivist linguist--the kind who'd make fun of my grammar-Nazi ass--would say that the point of language is to communicate, and if her spelling is so obtuse that half of us have no idea what she's saying, yeah, she's wrong.
Actor4life--Most dialects of American English don't pronounce 'gorgeous' as anything at all similar to 'gawjus,' which is probably why half of us were scratching our heads over it.

Yeah, I don't agree with bashing people over minor mistakes or imperfect writing because a lot of us aren't conerned with perfect grammar when it comes to message boards. Though I agree that extreme carelessness makes it difficult to read posts. I honestly had no idea what was meant by "gawjus," lol. So I don't think TVAW was being bitchy. I think she was genuinely confused.

For what it's worth, I thought "gorgeous" maybe, MAYBE was what they meant, but I still don't understand if you wanted to be gushy, why that would be the route you'd take.

Ah, I get it now! I was wondering why people couldn't just read it out loud and understand it. That is actually pretty much how I pronounce the word, living in London. Hmmm, because I naturally read everything everyone else says on here in an English accent.
