Eponine in "On My Own" clip *shudder*

On the official Les Mis website, there are 4 video clips of various songs, and I was really disappointed to hear the On My Own clip. I just think that the actress's voice isn't that good. I'm definitely not a voice expert, so it's just my opinion, but tell me what you think: http://www.lesmis.com/pages/sights_sounds/video.htm

Also, does anyone know who the actress is?
olly

I don't think it was 'shudderingly' bad, but it definitely wasn't the best I've heard.

Sorry, can't help you with actress...
The Very Angry Woman

It's Linzi Hateley, who is featured in the "Stage by Stage" video, filmed in 1988. At the time, she was the current London Eponine.
Quique

Vocally, I like her.
The Very Angry Woman

Your sig is huge.

Someone told me once... A long time ago... That she had been cast but was yet to perform the role on stage in front of an audience when she performed it for the video... Anyone confirm or deny this?

Is it?

I'm viewing everything on my Mac. Resolution: 1440x900.

It looks tiny on mine.

But I'll go resize it.

She was in it for almost 2 years.

I'll see your Mac and raise you my Intel iMac! 1680 x 1050.

I'll give you a screenshot if you want.
Quique

I hate you.

You've got an Intel Mac? I still have the crappy G4. Well, it's good. I'm just jealous.

I resized. Better?
Quique

Here's how my sig's original size appears over at Mf.net. I resized the file's original 1440x900 to 700x490.

The Very Angry Woman

OK, that's better.

Yes, I love my new baby.
lalala

I don't think her voice is sooooo bad.. she does shout a little and let her voice flip around somewhat uncontrolled. But like Olly said, wasn't the best I've heard but also not the worst I've heard.

I just despised her orange lipstick!
Moci

I like Linzi Hateley, she's been better in other shows, apart from Les Mis, but I do really like her 'On My Own'. The only major problem that I have with her and pretty much everyone else in 'Stage by Stage' is the 80s-ness and the perfect makeup.
digitalxdoll

I actually quite like Linzi Hately, i like her better on a boot i have of her though.

Here is her On my own from the boot:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/qhc3go

But i love her A little fall of rain (and this is the first time i have ever heard an applause after this song?)

Ep-Griz-Reno

The thing about her is that i don't like her style, nor her quality, however, I think it's a valid character choice if her voice isn't stunningly beautiful...and I mean, I'll be honest, I played eponine last summer and I sang it with quality, and I gave her a beautiful voice, but it ALSO makes sense to me why her voice would be whiny...it gives marius more of a reason to not LOVE her...it gives her more contrast from cosette...just my thoughts =D

Thanks for that. I already had it but the quality of this one is so much better.

I am intrigued by some of the orchestration heard in this "On My Own." I've never heard it anywhere else. It's the timpani. I've never heard it played during the line..."His world will go on turning." It's absolutely thrilling and I wonder why they didn't leave that in there? I love how the french horns come in right after. It gives that little part an "oomph" that makes an already emotionally powerful moment, all the more dynamic.

I wonder if it was written into the orchestration especially for Linzi? She does have booming vocals and they probably wanted to compliment that.

Do you not think that she's got a beautiful voice? I'd have said that IMO, Linzi's Eponine is rather well sung.

The thing is...it's just sort of weird. I don't think she's got pitch problems or key problems or any real PROBLEM...her voice is just...i dont know... just awkward sounding to me...but yeah-that's just me! =D

I was exaggerating a bit there...her "I love him" part at the end was good.
Quique

Linzi Hately is one of the better Eponines, in my opinion.

Very emotional, wonderful actress, and strong voice.
Marie-leah

I prefer lea songola (SP?) I found that version a bit to american like... (no offence ment its the way she pronounced the words sounded more american)

Salonga.

And "too American" is better than "too British". (Or "too Japanese"...)

...I think Sutton plays her very...interesting ((in a good way))...it's unlike any eponine I've ever seen...if you haven't seen her "On My Own" on youtube, you may wanna check it outttt...it's really neat how she portrays her

I agree. Sutton's portrayal is extremely different. At times I like it and at others I don't. I have the bootleg of one of her performances. Wink

There is hardly a shortage of illegal preservation of Sutton's Eponine.

Considering the ammount of Les Mis fans, Eppie-boppers and Sutton Foster fans, I'd be surprised if there was a shortage.

The only reason to be surprised is the fact that most of them hadn't even reached puberty when she left Les Miz, and you don't generally find the K-8 set running around the theatre with Mommy and Daddy's camcorder.

I've only seen her performance on youtube.com, but it was enough for me to be able to judge the style of her performance and the angle at which she portrayed Eponine.

Hahah! My daughters would not be caught in Public attempting to do that. (if I have any)

I'm the one responsible for posting that Sutton performance video clip over at YouTube. Twisted Evil

My handle there is "LaMisere."

Check out my vids! Lots of Les Mis goodies, which most of you have probably already seen.

I'll make it interesting and allow requests. If you wish to see anything like interviews, specials, or whatever...let me know and I'll see what I can upload and post.

I'm talking legal stuff here not bootlegs, btw. :S

In your opinion. Smile I personally love and prefer my Eponine's to be cockney. Though I've seen/heard some American Eponine's who have been very, very good. Sutton Foster, for one.
audreydarling

she was pretty good..a powerful voice..not my favorite..I saw Mae-Ane Disono when I saw the show and her voice was like velvet..totally gorgeous! But this actress wasn't too shabby..I think she captured Eponine's character..like the harsher aspects of it!

Ma-Anne Dionisio (note spelling) was phenomenal. But it's really difficult to compare her to Sutton Foster. If I didn't know better, I'd have no idea either of them had played the same role at one point. (Well, roleS, technically, since both have played Sandy in Grease.)
audreydarling

"this actress" I was refering too wasn't Sutton Foster..I really like Sutton's portrayal..it was whoever is on the clip at the begining of the thread (Lizi i think) but yeah Ma-Anne's performance was totally different from Sutton's ..I absolutely adored Ma-Anne..she will always be my favorite Eponine Very Happy

Linzi Hateley.
digitalxdoll

I have heard Ma Anne Dionisio and she sounds great, but how did she portray Eponine?[/quote]
Fantine

I'd like to know that too. I love her voice.
Colle

About Ma-Anne Dionisio, the way I would describe her Eponine is somewhat playful, with a mixture of saddness and toughness.

As for Linzi, I am not sure what I think about her vocally.
musical4eva

she wasnt the best but she wasnt terrible either. i've heard better though

personally i dont think there should be applaus after that song. if it ends in silence it is much more emotional. when we did les mis i actually started crying in that song. in 'the night' i had to hide my head in my dress to wipe the tears away. its the silence that does this
