The 1982 TV miniseries with Lino Ventura as Valjean, hands down. The 1958 movie with Jean Gabin and the 2000 miniseries with Gerard Depardieu aren't bad either.
The 1998 one sucked.

I liked the miniseries with Gerard Depardieu. I also liked the 1998 version, mostly just for Uma Thurman. What a perfect Fantine.

That one was broadcast on Fox Family. It shouldn't be that hard to find in the US.

Of the Les Miserables movies I have seen, I think I like the 2000 mini-series the best, though there are some odd things about it. For example, why doesn't Gavroche seem to age? On the plus side, Marius and Eponine's relationship(for lack of a better word) was done well, probably the closest to the book I have seen.

Some of the 98 version was decent, but most of it was trash.
