I think I'm dreaming. Can't believe such a rare vid exists!!
I LOVE the rehearsal footage. And Rebecca Caine. Colm is so adorable, lol. |

There are a lot of amazing vids on YouTube lately. I found these incredibly high quality Argentine and Mexican vids just now. I'll just post my faves, then you can search for the rest as there are many...
At the End of the Day/Lovely Ladies (Argentina) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_6n_FIVe_E Nothing like the original staging. <3 On My Own (Mexico) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JezqWyU0Zr8 Her singing is beautiful, but it sort of bugs me how her eyes are at a fixed position during the entire song. Chain Gang (Argentina) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRP3NqOepbg |

Yes, they are. Michael is so handsome. Shockingly, Frances hasn't changed much since then. Good genes? lol. |

WOW! Wonderful finds! I didn't know that some of those things existed! I'm not home and I can listen to them right now, but all this young faces from London are priceless!

GAAAAH they're so young. I'm surprised Michael's 80's hair didn't take over the world.
jackissensational |
ZOMG- Thank you.
Mikey looks like some cracked-out 80s pirate. Frances is hot as ever. Colm is the bomb.com. Thanks. |

Yeah I saw that a few days ago actually--it's when I first found out I've been pronouncing "Colm" wrong this whole time.
It's an awesome video though! |

That. EARRING.
WHAT. I squee'd at AHFOL. And Colm's speaking voice never fails to thoroughly enthrall me. His singing voice I know so well, you know? I hear it and I'm like, That's Colm. But then he starts actually speaking, and I'm like... confused... And I can't stop staring at Mikey's turquoise cumberbund. Unless the earring is in the shot. They're all so adorable. I like that they're saying things like "Do you think it'll ever live up to Nicolas Nickleby?" and I'm going "Nicolas who?" Dramatic Irony, people. |
||||
Quique |
Same here. His speaking voice is totally jarring. |
||||

I was thinking the same thing. Its the accent. When he sings, you'd never know he was Irish, but when he talks, it's obvious.
Rebecca and Frances look beautiful, and I kind of like Alun's little mustache. And THE EARRING. |
||||

Wow... I can't believe Les Miz is older than me!
jackissensational |
Frances got like... No Love! I guess they didn't anticipate the BOPPERS!
Quique |
I'm nearly 7 years older than OLC Les Mis. |
||||
wicked_boy |
Haha. May both of you keep going strong! |

They emerged soon enough. Have any of you read that Lea-loving, Frances-bashing review on Amazon- I don't remember if it's of the OBC or TAC -that's like "Before Lea came along, nobody paid attention to Eponine, Lea made her a popular character"? If that was the case, then what role did Frances win the Tony for? The whore she played in "Lovely Ladies?" (I realize this is kind of irrelevant to the topic, but I've been wanting to say that ever since I read that review). |

OMG, watch the production. This is going to sound like a real back handed compliment, but it was amazing to see Michael Ball performing AHFOL without being at all hammy or anything. It shows why he was such as hit in the role. |
||||
Trevor reincarnate |
Yeah. Until I saw that video, I always wondered how he got Marius.
But this makes sense. A young, handsome, not-over-acting Michael Ball makes a lot more sense than an older, fatter, over-acting TAC Michael Ball. |
||||
curlyhairedsoprano91 |
I know. At least this clip made it seem like the show originally planned to have Cosette as the most "featured" role (of the young girls). AHFOL was all melty and such. Rebecca's voice is the most gorgeous thing, like, ever. Michael Ball... you can totally see how "Marius" he was. Like, he wasn't "the hottest thing ever," but he was sort of chubby-faced throughly adorable "put him in your pocket" cute. And Colm's accent is like whoa. |

Actually, I half-agree with the review. Not in the "OMGZ LEA IS GODDDD" sort of way, because I think Frances was a better Eponine (although CKB pwns them both). The fact that Frances won the Tony means that she was recognized for doing a fantastic job with the role ... it doesn't mean that there was the "Eppie-bopper" culture yet. Think about it. There are Tonys every year. Does every winner have a "bopper" culture? The "nobody paid attention to" probably doesn't mean that, literally, nobody noticed that Eponine existed in the musical ... it probably just means that the fangirls started (or at least intensified) with Lea. |
||||
EponineMNFF |
Did anyone notice Frances's royal blue outfit in the rehearsal footage?
So 80s... |
||||
LesMisForever |
Loved that piece . Thanks Enrique!
It made me sigh though with everyone is so much older now, the presenter included. Frances is probably the best one who still have some of that youthful look. |
||||
Vanessa20 |
That's probably true. I just thought it was silly to imply that the character never made an impact until Lea came along.
I agree. I wish there were more footage of him in the role- and of the whole OLC, for that matter. |
||||
mastachen |
I wish I knew Frances back in the 80s.
I do think that Lea is a better Eponine than Frances. I think that had Lea originated the role of Eponine and Frances was in the TAC, there would be no argument over who is better or not, and Lea would have won the Tony. But I agree. Celia pwns them both. |

That video is amazing!!!!!!!
All the speaking voices throw me off so much (except Michael Ball - he sounds the same but boy does he look different! ). Frances's speaking voice actually matches her singing one! Which I find amazing, because now it's the only thing about her that gives away her age. And Rebecca Caine too! She's just amazing! Random story, but I accidently saw both Frances Ruffelle and Rebecca Caine onstage recently! I'd already booked for a show at the Edinburgh Festival, and then the day before I went up there I found out that two of the actresses in it had pulled out and both of them were the replacements! I'm still sort of on a high from that shock! Both are incredible now by the way (and while people are talking about it, I have to support Frances's Eponine all the way) |

A Les Mis rehearsal related video, but not nearly as old as Quique's video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_GnQoR9PyM I'm posting this because of Michael Ball getting jiggy near the end of the video. |
||||
lesmisloony |
...someone tell me I've not gone mad, please. Um. No way that was Colm. The guy they interviewed? And said was Colm? That's not him, right? Or have I gone wrong?
No. It wasn't. They showed Colm at the end. I know Colm when I see him. That wasn't him. /spasming (Also, lol Mikey. Never stop being ridiculous.) |
||||
flying_pigs |
It wasn't Colm. It was Peter Polycarpou (sp?) who was in the OLC and sang Enjolras' role for the 20th anniversary. |

FYI - for those in London, Rebecca Caine is doing a charity concert with Frances Ruffelle on Saturday, October 11, 2008. The show is called Practically Purrfect and is a benefit for the Hounslow Animal Welfare Society. She'll be singing songs from all the great modern musicals including Phantom, Les Mis, Wicked, Cats, Mary Poppins, and many more. If you're in the London area, definitely check it out!! It's a wonderful opportunity to see Rebecca live in concert (and with Frances) and it's also a great cause. All the info is on her website at: http://www.rebeccacaine.com/news_01.php Wish I could go!!! |
