I dreamed a dreamHave you already seen this?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY |

I had not seen that before. She's amazing!
EDIT: Just after I posted this, I went to have breakfast. First thing I saw when I looked at the newspaper "British woman impresses whole world" |
||||
Fantine |
People are probably gonna hate me for this but... I didn't think it was that good! Well sure, better than you might expect at first glance, but that vibrato is dreadful and her breath support could be a whole lot better.
Paul Potts, now that was someone who really impressed me. |
||||

Fantine, thank you! I also really don't think she's good. Not a strong voice, didn't capture the emotion of the song really, and did nobody else notice she omitted a verse??
Orestes Fasting |
I've seen better in professional productions, but I've also seen much worse. And for someone with no vocal training to have a voice like that is pretty damn impressive.
Very glad she didn't try to sing it pop-style. |
||||

Ewww, that would have been awful. A girl at my school is doing "On My Own" for an audition, and she does it in this awful poppy voice.
Lara |
I think they had to shorten it for the performance because I also noticed the tempo is quite a lot faster... so they tried to jam it in to fit the time?
I thought it was pretty good and I was very happy to see everyone's reactions. The eye rollage pre-song made me want to punch them. edit: I watched it again and I change "pretty good" to "very good". |

I actually liked her...it's not like she was auditioning for a part on Broadway, and I'm sure if she gets enough practice and training, she'll be able to smooth out her vocals just fine.
She's becoming quite the internet celebrity...there was an article about her in the Toronto star this morning, she's doind real well for herself. |

One of my friends who knows practically nothing about LM has texted me a million times about this girl. She loves her. I still haven't watched the clip yet... mostly because I always seem to either be in class or at work when I come to this forum...
mastachen |
She had to omit the verse. She only gets like 2 and a half minutes or however long to sing the song. But yes, everybody on this board probably noticed that she skipped a verse. |

Of course she is not the best Fantine ever. But you must keep in mind that the woman has no vocal training and is performing live for the first time in her life in front of hundreds of people. I've seen and listened to a handful of professional Fantines who are worst than her, even after years of vocal training and hundreds of broadway shows behind them. Given her particular conditions it is very impressive. I also think that she sounds better that she maybe is because of the surprise factor, because everybody was so sure she was going to be awful. I though she was going to be good before I listened to her but only because I knew there was had to be a reason for my friend to send me the video. But I have to admit that if I had been sitting in front of my tv that evening and I had seen that woman appearing on stage I'm afraid that I would had made the same wrong assuptions that everybody else did About Paul Potts, am I the only one who doesn't like him that much? |

Finally saw this after the third time one of my friends linked me to it on facebook. She's lovely! Even Simon cracked a little smile there.
lizavert |
My grandfather finally got me to watch that video. I was pleasantly surprised. My favorite part, other than the singing, was when she told Simon how old she was. She just owned it.
No, you're not. I think that the biggest difference between Susan Boyle and Paul Potts is attitude. She owned the song she was doing, from beginning to end. |

Go check out iTunes' top 40 songs and albums and you'll see "I Dreamed a Dream" is at #34 and the OLC album at #11.
Wow. |

^That makes me so incredibly happy!!! It's awesome The show is getting more exposure since most people don't know of it now.

Oh dear, have you guys seen the comments on this video?

I feel an extreme urge to comment "Les Misrables brought me here" or "Gunilla Backman brought me here" |

Susan Boyle
When I saw the initial clip, I was initially wowed like most people. But before the songs was even over, I started wondering to what extent that had to do with the build-up that preceded the whole thing. It was really obviously presented as a reversal of what was expected. Now there's this "Cry Me a River" recording. Well, I don't like it that much and I wonder if it's because there's a different expectation around her now, one laid by the "I Dreamed a Dream" performance. I guess there is one word that is beginning to describe my whole overall reaction to this thing and that is - meh. I mean, good luck to her and all that, but... Later days David |

What is up with that "...brought me here" crap anyway? I actually like her recording of 'Cry me a river' a whole lot better than IDAD. I might even love it. |

MlleTholomys |
At first, I thought it would be great, Les Miz would have more fans, and I would maybe have a few new friends at school. But really? This Susan Boyle thing is getting out of hand. They're annoying me more than the Eppyboppers do.
music is my life!!! |
i think the backing track was off the karaoke cd. i've used it a coupla times, but there are better backing tracks than that. |
||||
Jaym |
I totally second this. At first I loved it and I loved that it was so popular, but it's getting SO annoying now. All those "Susan Boyle brought me here" reactions. Marieke and me tried replying to them on youtube. It gave me some good laughs, but still. They are so..... aargh!! I'm so annoyed... I hope this hype is over soon. |
||||

Now that I've eaten, and I'm less cranky, I find them hilarious. "Wow, you're a mouthy little brat, aren't you?" I have half a mind to reply saying "No. I'm a rational little brat." |
||||
Mistress |
so, the Cry Me a River clip is actually Boyle? It sounded so drastically different that I wasn't sure and was thinking that it might've been somone's idiotic prank...but to be honest, she sounds VERY good in that audio. She should of used that as her audition piece IMO.

I just found this rather interesting article in the Toronto Star today:
http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/621572 What do you guys think?...much to my own chagrin, I find myself agreeing a little. |
||||
lesmisloony |
...I agree a lot, actually.
Vanessa20 |
I kind of agree too.
I was just thinking about how my mom reacted to Paul Potts' rendition of "Nessun dorma." It was good considering his limited training, but barely adequate compared to how it's usually sung on the operatic stage. But the whole "Surprise! He can sing!" factor made my mom get all sentimental and start calling his rendition "THE BEST EVER." Now, my mom's heard that aria sung by Luciano Pavarotti, Jussi Bjorling, Franco Corelli, Placido Domingo, Ben Heppner and more. Does she really, rationally think that Paul Potts sang it better than all of them? Or is it just the fact that a dumpy mobile phone salesman managed to sing it halfway decently that makes her all gushy? |

I watched the clip of that kid, and he was incredible. Like, genuinely incredible.
curlyhairedsoprano91 |
I LOVE THAT LITTLE KID.
Susan Boyle I'm quickly growing tired of. I mean, I like her voice, but seriously. She wouldn't be getting so much attention if she weren't so ugly. And that's just a fact. But I love that kid. |

Oh yeah I do think it is a set up to be honest. I mean you had all the build up to him singing Valerie, talking about how he sung it at parties and to his family and yet he's suddenly stopped without getting distressed or annoyed that he couldn't sing the song he apparently prepared so well but was just able to whip up another song and apparently hit that high note out of nothing? I don't believe it personally. All reality TV is just geneated fiction to attract the masses but I've got to admit he's a good performer and his version of Valerie wasn't too bad (pretty generic though, so why did Simon complain? He's the master of bland generic pop) so I think that he'll have a nice career doing a few Micheal Jackson covers, performing in the West End Micheal Jackson musical perhaps and spend the rest of his life in obscurity like the rest of Simon's puppets do.
I've only caught onto the Susan Boyle bandwagon quite late and already I am tired of it. It was a very good performance for an amateur singer but yes it did play on the underdog having her day ploy a bit too much. Looking back to the original clip the way they presented her (the elephant like music while she's eating a bun and walking up) was DISGUSTING! Why are these companies allowed to disgrace and humiliate people like this? Honestly it's just as horrible letting the public titter and giggle over someone who's a bit different, presented as if they're a walking joke, as posting videos of people getting beaten to death on YouTube and getting comments like "LOL dis iz bear sick man ROFLZ". But I do think she did a good job and the other things she did were great as well and she's helped the popularity of the show which can't be bad - the OLC recording is now in the iTunes top 100 albums of all time, I think it's #11 or something like that. Speaking of YouTube comments... well it was going to happen, wasn't it? You get these stupid things literally all of the time. I mean half the comments on the site are just chain mail and porn adverts so you shouldn't worry so much about it. And I'm technically an Eppie Bobber as well, mainly because I don't loathe her to death but really felt sorry for her when watching the West End version. However my sympathy for her has lessened slightly now I'm more familiar with the Symphonic Recording because the lady who plays Eponine does a good job but the way she sings means I can't really feel for the character any more - it's just a bit too gritty and lifeless in my honest opinion. It'll all die down soon enough. By the way has anyone seen this? This guy, Jamie Pugh, has just done a cover of "Bring Him Home" on the show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8b4O76_l-k Everyone's doing a Les Miz cover now - I partly hope the whole show's performed so we get a whole surge of new fans to the show knowing the whole thing . I've only seen a bit of this but he does a pretty good job, considering he's never done anything like it before and has a lot of stage fright |

["That little kid"] I'm quickly growing tired of. I mean, I like [his/her] voice, but seriously. [He/She] wouldn't be getting so much attention if [he/she] weren't [a child]. And that's just a fact. |
||||
UKDeer42 |
I've only just heard about him today and seen the video of him once and already I'm tired of him as well It's not like we've seen a million or so little kids with bursting, wailing uncontrolled voices on these sorts of shows is it? |
||||
curlyhairedsoprano91 |
Oh please. Of course he wouldn't be getting so much attention if he weren't a kid. Susan Boyle wouldn't be getting so much attention if she lost weight and tweezed her eyebrows. That's the way the world works. |
