Aimee -

Have an exellent trip. Bring back pictures if you can! I've never seen Paris - but I've heard it's lovely. I'm sure you're pretty excited as it is!

Even though you're probably gone by now, have a good time!

I just came back from Southern France. I'm really frustrated because I was there for 2 weeks and I went to a good number of different towns, but I didn't come across either of the French recordings of Les Miserables or a copy of the book.

Really? I was in Montreal earlier this year and I found a lovely annotated edition of the book in a little used bookshop... and I wasn't even looking that hard, because I already had two copies in French and one in English. Rolling Eyes The recordings are a bit more obscure, but it astounds me that you didn't find a copy of the book.

What I mean is I didn't find a relatively old copy of the book, even though I looked in several second hand book stores and the like. Actually, in one shop a bookseller did show me a 1960's leatherbound copy that came in three volumes with illustrations and everything. But even though I don't speak French, I turned to the end and saw the names Gavroche and Courfeyrac and after checking some more, realised that this was not the complete version.
I mentioned this to the man in the store (he spoke some english) and first he assured me that it was the complete copy, but then after a few other people had gathered, he checked the book himself and then quietly sent me out of the store. Confused
Aimee

Hi, I'm home!! We had a great time. Very Happy

Here are a few images of Hugo-land, but not as he would have known it.

Basilique du Sacre Coeur

Opra Garnier

Notre Dame Catherdral

Eiffel Tower

Champs Elysee, looking towards Arc de Triomphe

I did go to Rue Rambuteau but didn't see the other road. [I admit I wasn't looking Wink sorry.]
Fantine

Thank you for the photo's Aimee, I love Paris Smile

What's in the Rue Rambuteau? Is that related to Les Mis? Confused
dramatic_mizfit

Fantine, I ordered the French recording through Amazon.fr.

If you're really desperate though, I bet I could hook you up. Smile

Aimee, looks like you had a wonderful time! I went to France 5 summers ago, it was glorious. I only got to spend a day in Paris though, and due to jet lag fell asleep before we got to the Tour Eiffel. Disappointing. Glad you had a good time!

At some point during Haussmann's reconstructions of Paris, the warren of alleyways surrounding and including the rue de la Chanvrerie--where the barricade was--was torn down and made into the rue Rambuteau. The rue Mondtour still exists and intersects the rue Rambuteau, so that's the closest you can get to standing on the spot where the barricade fell.
