I remember...

When I was a little kid, way back in 1989, my music teacher forced us to listen to some play. Being only about 13, I was naturally put-off by the prospect of having to come to his class every day and listen to two hours of some boring play. I figured I could be doing something useful, like beating on some drums instead.

But, some of the songs obviously stuck as I kept finding myself singing "On My Own" and "Do You Hear The People Sing" every now and again years later. (Like, very recently) Knowing I had heard this music from somewhere but not remembering where, I decided to google these lyrics. Came up pretty quick as "Les Miserables". After performing some digging, I found the original London cast soundtrack on Amazon and purchased it. I was thrilled, as these were the songs I remembered sung by the same people that I remembered.

But, looking back on the actual class, I remember the play we listened to having normal conversation as well as the music. While the music is great, I'd love to have the whole thing! Anyone have any ideas as to what this would be called, and where I could purchase it?

I'd love to have a copy of this. While I don't remember the play all that well (bits and pieces), I remember the music. And while the music is excellent, I'd love the whole thing. (I'm not sure of the rules, but I haven't found anything like this on peer to peer networks either.)

Actually, Les MIs doesn't have any spoken dialogue--it's completely sung through. If you want the whole thing, though, there's a Complete Symphonic Recording on 3 discs that has all the dialogue-y pseudo-recitatives and such. The cast isn't as good as the London and 10th anniversary recordings, but it does have every note of the show on it.

I definitely remember the cast being the original London cast, at least very similar.

I'll look into the complete symphonic recording though. Maybe that's what I'm after. Thanks Orestes!

There is very little spoken dialogue in the musical. I can only think of Gavroche's announcement about Lamarque, a few lines at the barricades about the army advancing, and sometimes Valjean speaks the line "you know where to find me" after Who Am I?

How can you forget the all time classic

"Right my girl, on your way!"

Very Happy

And the Symphonic Recording is a mixed cast from London, New York, Sydney, Tokyo and LA. The soundtrack CD that just has selected songs on it is the original London cast I think.

Ah! you're right. And also Javert's "NO!" Razz

My copy of the London recording is no more cut down than my copy of the Broadway recording, and only a little more so than the 10th anniversary concert CDs. It's possible, though, that the OP might've bought a highlights recording that only has the big famous numbers on it.

If that's the case he might be better off with the 10th anniversary recording, which has most of the music on it and a stellar cast, than the CSR, which has all the music but also has major issues. Like the fact that most of the cast recorded their parts separately in studios all around the world and were then mixed together, which doesn't exactly result in a cohesive final product. And that a third of the cast members actively suck.

Yeah I get what you mean bout the CSR but it's nice to listen to the entire thing...

Can you get an album recording of the TAC? I've got the DVD but I didn't realise it was CD too?

Yes.

although strictly speaking the CSR isn't complete as it doesn't include the Well Scene (which was reinstated after the CSR was released)

As well as several other lyric changes. The CSR is only complete as of the version used in 1988.
