If You Could Cast the Les Miz film...

There's talk again about a Les Miserables film based on the musical.

I'm curious as to who would you cast in the film if you were in charge?

Andy.

Orestes Fasting

Gerard Butler as Grantaire.

He has the voice for it. Very Happy
Xxmcfly85xX

Lea Salonga as Fantine. Just because I guess she's passed her Eponine days.
Monsieur D'Arque

Jason Alexander as Thenardier
Lily Tomlin as Mme. Thenardier
Christopher Lee as the Bishop
The Pirate King

John Owen-Jones as Valjean
Philip Quast or Michael McCarthy as Javert

Quote:

That's funny, I never knew Grantaire was meant to sound like a 12 year old playing with a cheap Darth Vader voice changer.

Provided you could top me in auditions. Wink jk

I'm not eniterly sure who I'd want. I think I'd like to have a mix of stage and (talented) film actors.
Fantine

Alan Rickman as Javert.

That would seriously be so awesome.
LaurelDP

Alan Rickman + Stick of Justice = OMG SEX.
Quique

Never thought of that, but he'd make a fab Javert!
Trevor

Robin Williams as Thenardier.
Sweeney Hyde

Ian McKellen for the Bishop...small part but he could do so much with it.

Zac Efron as Fauchlevant so we can see him get run over by a cart.

Zac Efron as Javert so we can see him drown in a river.

Zac Efron as Enjolras so we can see his dead bloody mangled body doubled over on the barricade.

Zac Efron as Fantine so we can see him toothless and dying of vd.

Zac Efron as Mme. Thernadier so we can see him in the baroness make up and dress at Beggars at the Feast

Very Happy

I was serious about the first one btw.
Trevor

Hmph. In all reality... If Zac Efron were to be in it (which I wouldn't mind) I would cast him as Joly.
Quique

I would cast Zac Efron as Cosette cause he looks like a chick.
Trevor

I forgot to add that I would want to see Rosie as Madame T with Robin Williams.

Or Sarah Silverman. lmao.

Correction...
Alan Rickman + anything = OMG SEX.
Fantine

I want Nathaniel Parker as Jean Valjean. The part of Javert is more suited for him with his looks, but he just kicks ass in a sympathetic role.
Eponine93

Well, my prospective cast is sort of a mixture of everything that's been said before:

Jean Valjean- John Owen-Jones
Javert- Alan Rickman Very Happy
Fantine- Lea Salonga (surprising, right?)
Madame Thenardier- John Travolta (kidding!)
Thenardier- Jason Alexander
Marius- Zac Effron ( :-& ) This is the honest prospective cast, not my dream cast.
Enjolras- If he was about 15 or 20 years younger, Johnny Depp (not likely, but that would be so. effing. cool.)
Eponine- An unknown, undiscovered talent.
Cosette- <Insert name of blond, boring, predictable Hollywood star here>
Sweeney Hyde

Anyone know if Rickman has the range to sing Javert? I mean...one would think he is more of a real bass if he was cast as Turpin in the Sweeney Todd film...maybe he's a baritone though...but does anyone have any real idea?
Fantine

I wasn't even thinking about that..... I just want him. (In more ways than one Wink)
Trevor

Why would everyone choose Jason Alexander as Thenardier over Robin Williams?
Moci

Fantine wrote:

I'd have put him more as a Thenardier, I couldn't see him as Valjean at all.
Trevor

Valjean - Hugh Jackman
Javert - Alan Rickman
Thenardier - Robin Williams or Johnny Depp
Mme Thenardier - Rosie O'Donnel or Sarah Silverman
Marius - Ewan McGregor
Cosette - Emmy Rossum
Eponine - Nikki Blonsky
Enjolras - Christian Bale
And just because Zac Efron has to be in every movie musical ever made...
Joly - Zac Efron
Sweeney Hyde

Trevor wrote:

Thank heavens he wasn't cast as Anothy in Sweeney Todd...

No. But I could see him as a Toby.
Not the best. But not frightening to me either.

I never thought about Hugh Jackman as Valjean, that would be very interesting! I'd like to see that.

As for Emmy Rossum, as much as I love her, I'd don't think they would cast her in another HUGE, extremely popular musical considering she was Christine in POTO.
Jemibub

If I were in charge of casting---EVERYONE would be put through auditions; no matter how famous.

But, if I was forced to cast people based on their envolvement in hollywood and what not---BUT, had the choice to dub them...

VALJEAN: Gary Oldman
JAVERT: Hugo Weaving
FANTINE: Diane Kruger
MME. THENARDIER: Rosie O'Donnell
THENARDIER: Johnny Depp
EPONINE: Natalie Portman
MARIUS: Orlando Bloom
ENJOLRAS: Heath Ledger
COSETTE: Rose Byrne

and maybe Peter O'Toole as the Bishop.
Trevor

I forgot Fantine. I don't know who I would have play her, though. I DID like Uma Thurman in the non musical movie with Liam Neeson.

What about Russel Crowe as Valjean?
DontDoSadnessxx

Valjean: Gary Oldman or Hugh Jackman
Javert: Alan Rickman
Thenardier: Robin Williams
Madame Thenardier: cant think of anyy
Fantine: Lea Salonga (she was AMAZING live hehe)
Marius: Ewan McGregor or Christian Bale ( if not than grantaire for him)
Cosette: (why is everyone forgetting about herr??) Rachel McAdams perhaps? or claire danes
Eponine: MEEE no jk umm i cant think of one!
Enjolras: ORLANDO BLOOM!!! hed be wayyy perfect <3
Little Cosette: Dakota Fanning (if she was a bit younger)

James marsden should be someone cuz hes awesome
aeschylean

I would probably kill myself if Orlando Bloom were cast as Enjolras.

My ideal Enjolras is Aaron Lazar, but that's highly unlikely for a film. Sad
krisavalon

Hey yeah, I could see Gary Oldman as Valjean.

i love rachel mcadams. i have her as my desktop.

but i wonder if she can sing.
Ghost

I think Treat Williams might be a great choice for Valjean, as you can hear from "Hair", he really has a killer tenor.

Alan Rickman as Javert would be wonderful, just... how good is his singing?

Americans shouldn't play the Thenardiers, the characters lose all their charm... Timothy Spall could be a good choice.

The youngsters (Marius, Cossette, Enjolras, Eponine) should be played by newcomers.

And... nothing against Lea Salonga, but you couldn't get away with an asian woman playing a french woman in a film. Same goes for Eponine. It just isn't believable.

I guess people are more willing to suspend their beliefs on stage moreso than in movies, meaning people would be more disbelieving of an Asian playing a white person in a movie than on stage.

By the way, I think it is totally ironic that Lea as an Asian, is playing a white character. I'm sure she remembers the controversy way back in the Miss Saigon days when white characters tried to play Asian characters. I'm not saying it's bad that Lea is Fantine, because I absolutely love her, but still, the irony isn't missed. lol

The mediums are different. Just because one thing works there doesn't mean it'll work in the other -- and race is just one factor. The same reason movie musicals are not carbon copies of their stage ancestors.

Only if you're looking for the irony, really. There's a world of difference between a show like Miss Saigon with race-specific casting and a show like Les Mis where it's not even mentioned.
Fantine

Alan can sing Very Happy Well, I have never actually heard it but... He has sung a song for a film. Something about fish?
DontDoSadnessxx

ahh yay someone agrees with my cosette.

AARON LAZAR IS LOVEEE. Saw him shirtless in the light in the piazza... my life has never been the same since.
if he could be enjolras thatd be awesome.
i was thinking more hollywood ish though.

and lea is awesome and deserves to be fantine no matter what race she is.
thats like with the current valjean in the revival on broadway. Drew sarich. hes really young but hes really great and does the part well. Hence why hes being sent to london for 6 months.

long live les mis!

My one regret about my Broadway Piazza experience was that I was sitting in the 500s and Aaron had his back to me during that scene. 'Twas disappointing to say the least though he somewhat made it up to me by giving everyone a good look at his rear in Les Mis. Wink
Orestes Fasting

Oh, Aaron, come back to Les Mis. I would kill to see his Enjolras opposite Michael Minarik's Grantaire. It would be the second-best thing to actually seeing this performed on stage.
marlyly

Are they actually going to make a movie-musical for Les Mis? Because it would be simply amazing if they do.

Dream Cast?

Jean Valjean- John Owen-Jones (because he really was that good when I saw him play the part)
Javert- Alan Rickman (whoever came up with this is a genious)
Fantine- Lea Salonga (I've heard she's good and don't have a better suggestion)
Thenardier- Johnny Depp (I actually said to my friend that he reminded me a bit of Jack Sparrow when we saw the show last week - think she thought me crazy)
Marius- Josh Groban (seriously - he'd be amazing. If not, I'd love to see Lee Mead in the role as well)
Cosette- Emmy Rossum (she just looks the part so well)
lesmisloony

Wow, I get so bothered when talk of casting a LM movie comes up on forums. No idea why. I'm in the process of collecting as many different film versions of LM as I can (just started, so I only have three not counting the TAC right now).

I object to the idea of casting either Robin Williams or Rosie O'Donnell remarkably strongly.

One thing Across the Universe got right was casting relatively unfamiliar actors in most of the big roles. That's what I want for LM.

However, it must be added that every time that Joe Anderson was onscreen in AtU I couldn't stop thinking of Enjolras. So... maybe that? Joe Anderson as Enjolras?

Do love the idea of Rickman as Javert.

Definitely should cast unknowns in as many roles as possible.

And Ewan MacGregor is FARR too old to play Marius. Come on, guys.

Can we stop casting people from that wretched POTO film? Unless you want Patrick Wilson to be a random barricade boy, which I could handle.
Orestes Fasting

Johnny Depp? I wouldn't object to seeing him as Montparnasse.

Emmy Rossum, however, needs to never touch a movie musical again with a ten foot pole. You can't even sneeze on 45th street without giving the flu to a pretty young soprano who could easily play Cosette, so why settle for Emmy?
lesmisloony

Quote:

Word.

Just had to come back to object mightily to Johnny Depp as Montparnasse. 'Parnasse is nineteen or twenty. Trust me; Monty's the only character I can claim to know EVERYTHING about. He's my favourite. I've studied him at length. I'm sure my picture and signature don't give that away at all...
herkind

True. Johnny Depp in 1985 would have been amazing though.

I quite like Montparnasse, myself. Smile
Patrick

I rather like the idea of letting me portray Enjolras
Hortonhearsawho

Realizing that Hollywood is Hollywood, and that famous people would definitly dominat the cast heres my picks, I'm not sure how many of these people can sing... but thats ok ... theres always voice doubles lol

Javert- I have to aggree alan rickman = best idea ever , but i'm wondering if he would play it exactly like he plays snape??
Jean Valjean - perhaps viggo mortenson, david wenham or gerard butler
Fantine - maybe Gwyneth paltrow or nicole kidmen
young cosette - Dakota fanning 3 years ago...
thenardier - maybe andy dick lol....
mme thenardier - Megan mullallyor caroline raye
eponine - michelle branch, vanessa carlton, or lily allen but I'd love to see nikki blonski play the part
marius - Ryan Gosling
Cosette - Mandy Moore - I hate her acting more then I hate lots of things.... but the girl can sing.
enjolras - josh groban
Gavroche - cody Hanford - the little boy just cast as flounder in the little mermaid
bishop - Ian mcKellen
Grantaire - dominic monahghan
lesmisloony

Just out of curiousity (testing the waters, I suppose) do people around here actually think that Gerard Butler and/or Emmy Rossum are talented singers ? Because if so, I may have to abandon this topic.

Word to herkind; I was a huge fan of Johnny Depp before Pirates 2 came out (I respect his acting ability now, but I've lost a lot of love) and I use to fangirl over the idea of him playing Montparnasse in a time warp. Those cheekbones ? Yeah, I could deal with that.
herkind

I don't think Gerard Butler can sing at all but he is a good actor and at least had the decency to appear humble/sheepish in Phantom related interviews. He is forgiven. Joel Schumacher and Emmy Rossum, however, are not. If I was Stephen Colbert I would still have them on notice. Emmy might be a decent singer if she had proper training, realized she was a mezzo and not a soprano and took the ego down about 1000 notches.

lesmisloony- I think I lost a bit of my Depp love after his Michael Jackson-esque take on Willy Wonka. That is taking my childhood into dimensions I don't want to think about. But cheekbones indeed. *flails*

I would give so much money to see Depp play the scene in the novel where Montparnasse attempts to rob Valjean and gets his ass kicked. I LOVE that part.
Orestes Fasting

Gerard? Miscast, victim of bad direction, voice is underdeveloped and all wrong for the part.
Emmy? Snotty wannabe diva with two facial expressions and really, really bad technique.

Gerard playing Grantaire would amuse me.
lesmisloony

I just wish I didn't have to constantly protect Raoul from legions of drooling Gerik fans... that would probably help me cope with the POTO film a little better.

I don't know why I have such a mindblock against Hugh Jackman as Valjean... I know he could do the role justice, but somehow I always imagine his intro to the Tonys the year he was hosting, and he becomes a punchline. ...Actually, my favourite joke is currently: "If Hugh Jackman had a sex change, he would be an ex-man!" Ahahaha... actually, it helps to say "lolzzz" afterwards. ...Sorry.

But the more I think about it, the more interesting Gerard Butler as Grantaire becomes... He needs a little stubble and a little bit of uglification, but I like the general idea...

I think anyone who has spent ages writing fanfic, developing an ideal mental image of the characters based on Hugo, and sketching the those images in margins is going to have trouble with these casting-a-movie topics.

herkind- I think I love you. That's my favourite scene too ! 'Parnasse is such a snarky chap. My favourite bit is the notion that Valjean basically whupped him and the boy still lets the gifted purse slide smoothly into his pocket as though he'd stolen it, then gives Valjean all kinds of trouble verbally. *pats Montparnasse* Also should add that I noticed your thingy says you're from NC--me too ! Crazy.
herkind

I think Butler as Grantaire could work. I can definitely see it. I agree with Orestes, he was horribly directed in Phantom. Erik should not be played like a fourteen year old girl.

lesmisloony- Where in North Carolina are you from? I'm from Cary but currently going to school in Asheville.
Orestes Fasting

I didn't get "fourteen year old girl," I actually got "beefcake way-too-masculine RAR I EAT YOUR FACE," which doesn't exactly work for a guy who hangs out in the basement emoing and sending his stalkee single red roses.

But with proper directing and some uglification, I think he'd be great as Grantaire, and it'd suit his voice better. He might improve with more voice lessons, but I doubt he'll ever sound ethereal enough for Erik. XD
herkind

I got "I'm so pretty; why don't you like me? I throw temper tantrums when I don't get what I want." Erik has never seemedso whiny to me before. The most ironic thing about it was though people called the Phantom hideous the make-up people never could bring themselves to make him ugly. For instance, in Point of No Return he's wearing this cute, little Zorro mask that covers basically just his eyes and then Christine rips it off and suddenly half his face and hair is messed up?

Anyway, topic. I can see him working Grantaire. A "rougher" voice could work very well for that role.
lesmisloony

herkind- I'm from Burlington (near Greensboro) and currently go to school in Chapel Hill. Which means we're closer than I'd expect. Coincidence-y!

And yes, Gerik and Emmy worked together to destroy the POTO movie. With help from ALW's tune-thievery, of course. I have it, but I refuse to watch it. It was a gift; I didn't go out and BUY it!

As Cleolinda Jones said: "AHHH HE'S SLIGHTLY UNATTRACTIVE ON ONE SIDE! TO ARMS!"
Fantine

I seriously think that Katie Melua as Eponine could be interesting.
Jemibub

herkind wrote:
I got "I'm so pretty; why don't you like me? I throw temper tantrums when I don't get what I want."

...maybe he should play Eponine Shocked . Visually funny and disturbing at the same time lol Laughing .
lesmisloony

Now that this topic has been brought up (for the trillionth time, but still) I'm on a constant lookout for people who would be okay in an LM film.

I was watching the second Harry Potter movie, and I decided that the guy who plays Tom Riddle could be one of the barricade boys. Maybe Feuilly ? That way he doesn't have too many lines (his acting is a little pathetic) but he does have the high-cheekbone look that most of the Barricade Boys do. In my head.
Fantine

Yes I can see that too.
lesmisloony

And speaking of ridiculous cheekbones, I think the conductor from the TAC should have a cameo. Like, as Bamatabois or something, because I love him.

And while we're talking about the TAC (or I am, anyway) I just want to mention how much I love the TAC Patron-Minette. The voice and costume of Babet is just Hugotastic. And the one big guy, who I think is Brujon in the musical, is my mental Gueulemer. Gotta mention Montparnasse's TWO lines and rip-off Enjy vest (and bowl cut ? I think he has a bowl cut under that hat, which is hilarious)... Definitely hate the Claquesous, though. Schoolboy!Claquesous freaks me out just a little.

edited because sometimes when I'm off on a tangent I don't make sense
Inspector_Javert

Alan Rickman for Javert - he's great in Sweeney Todd, and his voice is velvety in the bass section...
After Sweeny my first thought was: Alan for Javert!

And the boy from the movie could make a nice Gavroche. He sings very well.

Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thnardier? What would you say? She was great.

My idea is Franco Nero for Valjean, if he can sing... he's an italian actor, best known for playing cool, badass Spaghetti Western heroes in his youth.
Monsieur D'Arque

Martin Short for Thenardier.
Peter O'Toole for the Bishop
lesmisloony

You're making me tired.
Ghost

VALJEAN - If they had the actor sing in the original tenor range, Treat Williams might be one of the few who could actually sing it well.
If the songs were transposed, Russell Crowe could fit the part.
JAVERT - Alan Rickman would be great ofcourse, if they want someone younger I think Hugh Jackman could work too.
FANTINE - Laura Michelle Kelly? Maybe Nicole Kidman could pull it off. How about Marion Cotillard? I don't know
THENARDIER - A brit definately. Timothy Spall, I think has the right vibe and he can also sing. Is Alun Armstrong too old today? possibly. Rik Mayall could be wonderful.
MME THENARDIER - Imelda Staunton? Jenny Gallowey would be a reliable choice.
MARIUS / COSSETTE / EPONINE - Newcomers, or actors from recent productions.
ENJOLRAS - Patrick Wilson would be good maybe, if they would want somebody with both film and stage experience. Otherwise Ramin Karimloo and Aaron Lazar are probably the best around today.
starmelace

I never even thought of Alan Rickman playing Javert. But he could pull it off, it would be....bloody amazing. It's so sad he's getting old.
NoOneMournsTheWicked

Fantine- Kate Winslet
Marius- Ben Barnes
Enjolras- Jim Sturgess
Cosette- Me

Young Eponine: Jodelle Ferland
Gavroche: Jimmy Bennett

If we were talking a new staging, I'd be out there picketing for Stephanie J Block to be given Fantine...but realistically for a feature film, I'd definitely vote for Rickman as Javert...I also have an inkling that Helena Bonham Carter as Mdme Thenardier would be very fun to watch.

Jennifer Ellison might make a good Cossette (dunno what her range is exactly though)...

Eponine... ... ... Thora Birch 10 years ago.
lesmisloony

Oh, HERE'S a brilliant idea!

jean val jean- jonny depp he could ttly do it lolzors he wuz so good as sweeny!
javert- alan rickman <3 <3 <3
fantine- helena bohnam carter she is such a gud actress n also she TTLY looks just like fantine!!!!!1
eponine- jessica alba!!!
cosette- ugh who cares amanda bynes or something
marius- zac efron <3 <3
enjorlas- hugh jackman!!

i don't think there is anybody else in the show tell me if im wrong!!!!!!lol

Ted Neely- no.

Dennis DeYoung would be a decent Valjean or Javert, though. His voice could be either one of them (he's one of THOSE who could switch between the parts, like the Japanese JaVerJean).

Once again, I'm taking the opportunity to post some clips of Gino Quilico in his usual baritone repertoire. I know it's off topic and I did it once before, but it's not every every day that an opera singer I've always liked steps into my favorite musical. I can't resist showing him off. Especially since I wouldn't mind seeing him in a "Les Mis" film... now he, I think, would be Jean Jean the Sexy Con.

The Javert who was opposite Gino Quillico had a higher voice than him. It was kind of surreal, but now I'm absolutely sold on baritone Valjeans. As long as there's no trouble with high notes in BHH, I am all for it.
Monsieur D'Arque

I must be the only person in the world who doesn't really like Les Mis performed by opera singers.
lottielou22

^ We should start a club.

Thenardier=Andy Sirkis (You know how he swipes Marius's ring? "My precious....")
Marius=Jim Sturgess *squeals, falls over*
Eponine=Anne Hathaway (please don't hurt me)

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Zac Efron's voice dubbed in all of the HSM movies?? So what is this with his being cast in all these musicals??
Monsieur D'Arque

He was dubbed in the first, but not the second, third or Hairspray.

Just being fair. The guy needs a chance at some better material- he's not that bad, and a big name draw. I'd love to see how he'd do with something more complex than HSM.
dcrowley

I think Zac Efron needs to back away from musicals... I mean, he isn't bad, but he is seriously headed down a type cast alley... He plays the SAME character in every movie... and every movie is a musical. He needs to make some changes while he is still young and back off the teeny-bopper roles.
SmallTownIngenue

I agree. Plus, I don't think Zac has the emotional capacity or singing ability to sing Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. At least not yet. But I have always thought Jim Sturgess would be a good choice for Marius though.
lesmisloony

^ Yeah. Except Marius is supposed to be attractive.
dcrowley

I find Jim Sturgess VERY attractive.
Monsieur D'Arque

Lesmisloony... who's your pick for a film Montparnasse?

Remember, Montparnasse is the most amorphous character in terms of portrayal. He has no real audience expectations save that he sings very little and is scary as hell with his stabbiness.

You can cast ANYONE, and this is a film, so a cameo wouldn't hurt anybody. Who do you choose?
