Re: Is Les Mis The Greatest Musical Ever?
An impossible a question for anyone to answer. What's the greatest movie ever? The greatest TV show? Greatest polka album? Success is also measured differently by different people. Your question is, frankly, ridiculous. |

The Phantom of the Opera is now currently the longest running Broadway show. Does that make it "the best"? No.
Like TVAW has said, and which I agree with, success depends on different people's tastes. (well I paraphrased that a little... but you get the idea). I will say that Les Mis is a very good show - it has very powerful music, but it is hard to say it's the best. It's a matter of opinion, really. |

Les Mis was however voted the #1 musical by listeners of the UK BBC Radio 2.

Many consider it to be and it's the most successful : statement of fact, many people do consider this. (I think)) : a humble admission he may be wrong, which is endearing. but what do you think? : asking you to give your own opinion on a discussion forum, not to provide facts and evidence of the truth of said statement. I think it beats any other musical by a long shot.: the giving of his opinion to start the conversation going. As to my opinion, I love Les Mis above all other shows and I have since the day I saw it and I would vote it top on any poll. |

But Les Mis is the longest running on the West End I wouldn't say the question is ridiculous. I think it's the best musical. We know that doesn't mean it is, but I still think it is. If you can answer the question then answer. I couldn't answer the question "Who's the greatest actor ever?" because I don't have one favourite actor. But I have one favourite musical so I can answer that question. |

to be the best means that there can not be anything better...in a world of ever changing shows and cast, is it possible for there to be a 'best' show? im not sure if it is...
it's possible to have the best libretto(SP) yes, but a show is more than lyrics and music, its about the feelings it evokes from the audience. Frankly based on the current cast of 'les mis' it is deffinalty not the best! far from it! in fact i'd say i was very disapointed by it as i dont feel that they did justice to a very good libretto (good...but possibly not the best...i dont know) whereas the previsous cast could easily have made it the 'best show' for that time period in london, but it is forever changing even when the smallest change happens, be that a member of the chorus leaving, or a lead changing, or adding a sound effect. Les Miserables is a very good libretto but sadly the current cast stops it being one of the 'best' around at the moment. |

It's not that ridiculous. Isn't one of the main points of joining a forum like this to talk about opinions? Plus, whether this thread comes to the conclusion that it is/isn't the best out there will it make any difference?
That having been said it's hard to say the "best" since were all bias in the positive or negative depending on what shows we've seen, cast recording we've heard, and musicals comparable in quality we know (as Bex stated). I like to think in terms of potential. If the show was performed perfect with actors up to not only playing their role well, but making it feel as though they are their role how would it be? That way all musicals are on equal footing. Still, it's hard to get past a really bad performance at times and see the good in a play. Before I ramble on forever I'll just spit out my opinion. I would say it's one of the best shows out there and here's why. Strong and down to earth characters, a fair number of really good songs when performed right, great storyline, and its popularity proves theres something about it that appeals to those even outside of the regular theatre going audience. |

First of all, I don't think the question is ridiculous at all, although one has to remember that you can't really answer a question like this with, "Yes it is the best" or "No it is not the best", because it all comes down to personal opinions. Still, I think it's interesting to see what other people think about it!
For me personally, I don't think any other musical is like Les Misrables, I think it is outstanding and the best musical to date! That is not to say I can't change my mind, or that there will some day come a musical that I will like better, but as of right now, I think Les Misrables is by far the best musical! |

Re: Is Les Mis The Greatest Musical Ever?
Hello I agree with TVAW apart from that ridiculous part. On personal level, yes it is the best musical, and nothing comes even close to it. However one can't say it is the best without stressing it is a personal opinion. Bex...i kind of disagree with you when you said that there is such thing as "the best libretto". I believe that there is no "best " in any form of art. Art is subjective. |

Bex |
yeah i guess your right. art wouldnt be art if we all felt the sam way. i didnt really mean 'best' more 'longest lasting' |

In my opinion, yes. By a long shot. It's definately unlike any other musical. |
