Japanese Cast RecordingsAlright, thanks to the charity of a 'friend', I now have enough money to buy one of the Japanese cast recordings. Based on your knowledge, people, which of the following do you recommend? Violet/Purple/Lilac, Green, or Light Blue/Teal?I have the Violet OMO, and I like Maaya Sakamoto, so right now I'm leaning towards that one. Ahh, yes, and I'd like to know about the quality of the Fantine and Javerts. My favorite Fantine is Patti LuPone, so if any of them them kinda have her voice quality, do tell. I like Javerts such as Terrence Mann (God almighty, am I the only one who DOESN'T think Philip Quast is God? I like him, but Christ...), Uwe Kroger (blasphemy!), and Miguel del Arco. Juan Rodo is pretty good too. So, if any Japanese Javerts fit the bill...YAY! |
||||
Mademoiselle Lanoire |
Of the three, perhaps light blue, though none of them are my favorites.
Orestes Fasting |
Oh, you have them? You lucky duck. PM me? |
||||
olly |
Wow, that is quite cool... PM me too, please? |
||||
Mademoiselle Lanoire |
No, I don't... I only have a couple tracks from each. Sorry to disappoint.
Orestes Fasting |
Ahaha, we're like vultures or something.
Cloudy This Morning |
Tell me about it. I was about to ask too... Blah. |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Damn it! You fraud!
Never mess with Pirates, lassy! WALK THE PLANK! |
||||
Pshhness |
Of the four NEW Japanese recordings, I personally prefer the light blue one. It's the only one whose Marius doesn't suck... -___-
Lazarus (Adam G) |
DO YOU HAVE IT?!
We have trading to do, matey. |
||||
Pshhness |
Sorry... Only the One Day Mores... =(...
I'll upload them for whoever that wants it! |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Sure!
My God, this is so hard to find! |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Tell me about it! I'd love some Japanese ODM!s!!!
Orestes Fasting |
Oooh, One Day Mores? Yes please!
Mademoiselle Lanoire |
Me! Me! | ||||
Pshhness |
Alrighty.
PM me if you want it =). |
||||

Sometimes you find these CD's on ebay. Does anyone have a cast list for these CD's? I want to know if the late Minako Honda plays Eponine on any of those. She is the only Japanese Eponine I have heard clips of besides Kaho Shimada and I liked her. Could someone tell about the quality of the Eponine's and Cosette's on these CD's?
Orestes Fasting |
Cast lists: http://seditious.frenchboys.net/adaptations.html |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Pshhness, I can't PM you! I tried for nearly half an hour and ripped most of my hair out, and it wouldn't let me send anything out! BUT I'M INTERESTED!!
Cloudy This Morning |
On a different note, I think I'll go ahead and get the Light Blue recording, because it has Kazutaka Ishii as Valjean, and I like him. It'll be a while before I actually have it, but once it gets here, we can all have happy trading.
Lazarus (Adam G) |
You owe us, Lassy! |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
P.S. Aaaaaarrrrrrr | ||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Yes sir!! | ||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
You forgot the 'aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrr.
Cloudy This Morning |
Oh! Yes, saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrr!! And I love your shexy new signature and avataaaaarrrr. |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Pshhness, you are the coolest thing ever. I LOVE YOU.
Jordan |
Did you know that today was International Talk Like A Pirate Day? Yaaar, ye do know!
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Really? I had no idea.
There's some irony. |
||||
Pshhness |
thing? I'm a girl. |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
I apologize. You're the kick-assing-est chick EVER! For this week, at any rate. Orestes had it a week or two ago. Mademoiselle Lanoir had it yesterday. I'm a playa. ...I'm a chick too, by the way... |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Alright, thanks to Pshhness, I have changed my mind. After repeatedly listening to One Day More! from the Violet, Light Blue, and Green casts, I have revised my decision.
I'm getting the Violet cast. Why? Because Masaaki Uchino (Javert) is to DIE for. He has such a sweet voice. And Yuka Kohno (Cosette) is adorable. And there's Maaya Sakamoto! And I don't care much for the Light Blue Marius. Masaaki Uchino totally won it for me. Oh, Kazutaka! Forgive me! |
||||
Pshhness |
Yeah, that's what's so great about One Day More - you get to hear a little bit of everybody!
Too bad Fantine isn't in it.. |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Might ye be revisin' that decision if I plundered some other wench's swag and got me the violet and green recordings?
I'm not sayin' it's immediate, just that agreements exist among scoundrels. |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
I will absolutely revise it if ye get the Violet and Grrrrreen. Keep me updated so that I'll know. .....arr. |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrr!
Jordan |

Gaaar... ye all need to view tha website! |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
I have the green cast. It's seven different kinds of shiny--I love their Enjolras.
Quique |
^ I wish to marry you. | ||||
Mademoiselle Lanoire |
What are the other six kinds of shiny? |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
The Green! Congratulations!
How shiny and happy and generous are you feeling this fine day? |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Yarrrr, maybe ye should PM me ter find out.
Lazarus (Adam G) |
God damn it! Fasting has everything I have plus much more.
You bastard! |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Fasting, Cloudy: I found what you're looking for.
I should have it in two days, you scurvy bilgerats. |
||||
Colle |
Thank you for the link to the cast list, Orestes Fasting. Too bad Minako Honda is not on any of them. If I ever do decide to get one of these, I might get the light blue cast too. I thought Kazutaka Ishii was a good Marius on the Japanese Red cast, and I would be interested to hear what he is like as Valjean.
Pshhness |
The other ones?? |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Nope...
If my sources are correct, I'll have Japanese Light Blue in two days time. (Quote from some guy from Musical Share) |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Alright, who else has the Japanese Orange cast?
I ask because...well, am I the only one who LOVES Takuya Kon's Javert's Suicide, but who was also kinda creeped out by the crazed cackle-slash-giggle he gives after his 'the stars are black and cold' line? It's a bit unnerving, which is probably what he was going for. But even so... His ending line was really great, though. And who the bloody in Attack on Rue Plumet felt the need to crow like a rooster? Or maybe it was a howl. |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Hey, could be worse. The green cast Marius actually starts crying during Empty Chairs.
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Actually, most of the Japanese Casts suck.
Orestes Fasting |
I dunno, there are a bunch of recordings I'd rate as much worse than the Japanese casts. The Japanese ones never stood out to me, but I wouldn't say anyone but the blue cast Valjean actually sucks.
Cloudy This Morning |
Awwwwwww.... |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
I can't stand the Valjean from the Tel Aviv Cast...
He's not the worst, but what is up with his need to caw like a crow?! |
||||
The Very Angry Woman |
I love Dudu Fisher, but he's more of a singer than an actor, and he tries way too hard at certain times and not enough at others. I actually own two of his solo albums. His orchestrations are...something else. |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
I hate disagreeing with TVAW for safety reasons, but I have to agree. Dudu's parts in Come To Me and Bring Him Home were very sweet, but most of the time I found I wanted to strangle him to death. Confrontation and One Day More!, for example. |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Has anyone heard the guy in the bootleg from the 1992 show with Philip Quast (I can't think of his name); he has a deep voice, and his high notes are weak and irritating. [/img]
Orestes Fasting |
Jeff Leyton? Irish Valjean on the TAC?
Cloudy This Morning |
Ohhh, I do like Jeff Leyton. Personally, I prefer baritones over tenors. Mmmm....Roger Allam... |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
UK Tour Manchester Soundboard 1992. I don't think it's Leyton.
I just got a Colm Wilkinson bootleg from the Dublin Cast. He's not as good as he was. He has an odd lisp, now. "Thith ith all I have lived for/thith ith all I have known" |
||||
Mademoiselle Lanoire |
Most of the actors on the Tel Aviv cast were quite good.
David Fisher was the exception. It'll probably be a while before I get used to listening to him. |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Leyton was the Valjean in Manchester opposite Quast in 1992. They're both on the highlights recording. If we have the same recording, and I suspect we do, then that's him.

Lazarus (Adam G) |
Would I be able to post a link without getting banned?
Just one. Of the guy I'm talking about. |
||||
eponinelover |
Has anyone Heard the Javert's Suicide on the 1988 Hungarian highlights? I think all of that recording sounds a little scary, especially in the "There is no way to go ooooon" bit! He sounds like a dying cat, doesn't he? (sorry Amy , I know you love cats) Anyway, if anyone doesn't know wha6t I'm talking about, or just wants to trade, please PM me.
Quique |
Yes, I've heard it. It's hilarious!!!
It sounds as if he's having his balls cut-off, hahaha!!!! |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
I MUST HEAR THIS RECORDING OF WHICH YOU SPEAK.
To the pirate ship, away! |
||||
eponinelover |
It does, does it? Or maybe he's desperate? I dunno. If you want to hearit, just PM me, or fasting has it. |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Or even better, that clip floating around of the Hungarian Valjean. "Who am I? Two-four-six-oh-auuuuuughhhhh!" (Please note that that is a mere approximation of an untranscribeable sound that really sort of defies description. )
Cloudy This Morning |
Alright, well, it's official.
Next week I'll be purchasing the Light Blue recording, and then I should get it about a week or so later. So, two and a half weeks, give or take shitty shipping. And then after that, I'll leak it out and no one will ever need the Light Blue ever again. Huzzah. |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Pardon me internet slang, matey, but... ZOMG!!!!111! |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Control yerself, matey. It's not befittin' a scurvy bilge-rat like ye be. Ya'r a pirrrrate. Remember that! Remember!! ...ARR! |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
I've had that recording for a few days, and I just now got around to listening to it. And I owe you an apology, Quiqui, because I totally did not believe you. But he does. He sounds just like his crotch got caught on the bridge as he was jumping. His voice is very lovely when he's not shrieking, though. Also, I owe Orestes a very late apology. I did not believe her when she told me the German ALFOR lyrics were awful. Having finally got around to actually sitting down and LISTENING to it, I come before you humbled. Orestes, you were right. They're hideous. I'm sorry I didn't believe you. And while I'm at, I apologize to Lazarus for nagging him about how to use Livejournal, I apologize to TVAW for being unjustly afraid of her, I apologize to GayBoy for being unable to shut my mouth about bootlegs, and I sincerely, sincerely apologize to the Carowinds Park officials for feeding pieces of my chicken strips to the local duck. I am sorry. There was no 'do not feed' sign, so I believe I acted accordingly. I hope the Light Blue will make up for all my past mistakes. Except to GayBoy, who undoubtedly wants no part of my dirty, dirty plan. |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Hahaha, the German lyrics suck hardcore. It's a pity, because the German productions had some of the best casts ever, but I just cannot listen to some of the songs without laughing until I cry.
"Cosette, ein Name wie ein Lied!" "Ein Lied fr dich!" "Meinst du mich?" "Ewig dich!" Lovely Ladies is flipping hilarious in German though, in the good way. It's just so freaking lewd--probably the best lyrics in the show. |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Heeeey, I think that's how the English one should have went. Oh my God, Lovely Ladies... Fantine's last line disturbed me for some reason... "Du legst dich auf ein kaltes totes Tier". Maybe that's just me? |
||||
Quique |
Translate!!!
I so want to know what they say in the German "Lovely Ladies." |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
I'll leave the full translation to Orestes as I'm sure her German is much beter than mine. But I do want to go ahead and spout out Fantine's ending line : It's either "You throw yourself/you put yourself (Orestes?) on a cold, dead animal."
Creeps me out. |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
No way am I doing a full translation of LL (*is too lazy*), but here's a very loose translation of one of the verses. Very loose.
Old men, young men, always walking in Harbor rats and mulattoes, hot and tattooed Posh bastards, fat and important Touch 'em in their trousers and they're already finished Cash is still the best compliment Yes, I lose at translation, no need to tell me. |
||||
Lazarus (Adam G) |
Wow.
German sucks. |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
I wouldn't say ALL the German lyrics suck... I think some of the lines in 'Come To Me' are very pretty. I always liked 'Halt mich fest, ich will dich nicht verlieren." Maybe I'll try to translate the whole Lovely Ladies, eventually. I'm just as lazy as Orestes. |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Well, that verse doesn't suck, it's actually quite amusing in German. I think a lot of the effect is lost with the meter and rhyme--it makes that verse funnier, and it makes some of the bad lyrics sound even more pathetic. All verse sounds awkward in translation, even good verse. For example, I adore the German translation of Phantom. First verse of Music of the Night? When the night comes, longing becomes clearer All dreams are truer in the darkness Free from fear, feelings climb out of the silence... Sounds really, really meh in English. Whereas every German speaker I know, upon hearing the translation of Empty Chairs, dissolved into guffaws. This pain knows no name No one will bring them back again A dark silence at the tables My friends are no more I don't think that gives much indication of why it's so freaking funny to hear Felix Martin go "Dunkles Schweigen an den Tischen, meine Freunde sind nicht mehr!" |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Keine aaaaangst, Monsieur Mariuuuuuus!
(giggles) |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Ich brauche dich, Ponine, ich geb die Welt, wenn meine Liebe dich am Leben hlt! |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Ich knnt' vor Glck vergl'n! Ihr schtzt mich vor der Nacht, ihr haltet mich ganz sacht... Und Regen... Lt die Blumen...." (cark)
God. Somebody needed to put the lot of them out of their misery... |
||||
Quique |
I know the entire German libretto by heart but I have no clue as to what they're saying. I love singing along to the German cast albums. It's a brutal sounding language at times but can also have a really sweet sound to it.
Orestes Fasting |
I have my suspicions as to why ALFOR wasn't on the Duisburg highlights. Come to think of it, this is probably why the German productions have so many bloopers. They figure they're working with crap, so they might as well have fun with it. XD |
||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Oh! The German production would be so much fun to work in. They really do have a good time with it. Some of the things they do are just so random that it's downright lovable. I'd love to see one live. |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Karl Marx ist tot! | ||||
Cloudy This Morning |
Javert : "Aus einander!!! Now watch as I knock this cellist unconscious with my baton!" *chuck* "BULLSEYE!!" |
||||
Orestes Fasting |
Would that be the cellist who showed up one night having forgotten his cello? XD
Cloudy This Morning |
Absolutely. That son-of-a-bitch had to pay somehow. |
