John Owen Jones off to Broadway

I was just listening to the Radio Wales broadcast from Bryn Terfel music festival at which Michael Ball, Ruthie Henshall and John Owen John were all performing (along with Bryn and Connie Fisher). During a Les Miserables section. Michael announced John is going to be Broadway's new Valjean. He said it was offical and wished him all the best for Broadway. Anyone heard any news as to when this is happening.

Les Mis section

On my own ~ Ruthie
Stars ~ Bryn
Bring him home ~ John
Empty Chairs ~ Michael

All sang One day more (with Connie I think joining them as Cossette)
All sang Do you hear the people sing.
Quique

Omg, are you sure?! Shocked I'm returning to NYC this Winter to see the show again. Hope I get to see him!
Cassie

Yes..........don't think Michael said when, just that he was going to be going.
Trevor

If this is true, I am so there. I don't care what obstacles my come my way. I will see him live.

Has anyone heard him sing "King of the World" from Songs for a New World on his album? Amazing. He is easily one of the best male vocalists ever.

It's because he's welsh.

Yes, I was at the concert and heard the announcement live and it's definately true. Unfortunately, it wasn't said when he was starting though.

That's pretty awesome. I doubt I'll be able to see him unfortunately.

When is Lea leaving? It would be fantastic if she was able to play the part opposite JOJ, my two favorites in their respective roles in recent years.
herkind

Lea is leaving on October 21st which is, if I remember correctly, when Drew's contract is up. So if JOJ is joining the cast it won't be with Lea. Sad

That would be awesome if he did though! I always go to New York over spring break so hopefully he'll be there in March if he joins the cast.

Would Drew be going back to Grantaire or leaving the show permanently?

Maybe he's going to London. XD
The Very Angry Woman

I wonder how they convinced Equity to go through with this one.

Shocked Oh my god!!! That's so amazing for all of you over in America!!!!
But the thought of him being away from the West End... I'll have to go and see Les Mis on Broadway again!! Twisted Evil
At least this means there's a chance I'll see him as Valjean again sooner than I thought after he leaves the London cast! (By the way, is his last performance on the 6th or the 8th of October?)
Gah!!!! This thread requires exclamation marks!!!!!!!!!!!
flying_pigs

John's last show is October 6th! I don't want him to go Sad Lucky Americans....

On another note, it's rumoured that London are getting one of the Broadway Valjeans.

EDIT: This was posted on Phansonline.net though nothing is official yet so not all information will be perfect:

Equity exchange. It's Drew.

John's contracted for a year, which has been divided into three months in London, six months on Broadway, and his final three back in London. At least that's the way I understand it.

So, JOJ is Broadway get JOJ for 6 months and London get Drew for 6 months. Hmmmm, it will be interesting to see Drew as JVJ...and sad to see JOJ leave for a while Sad

JOJ coming to Broadway?! Man, I would LOVE to see that!

Pity I won't be able to convice my parents to take me to NYC again this year to see the same show...or be able to save my allowance for a ticket.

I have the same problem as you. My mom will say something like "I already sat through it 3 times before you were born and once with you last year; I'm not taking you again even if you pay", my dad will say something like: "I don't want to see a show about dirty French peasants" and niether of them will want me to go into the city by myself or only with friends my age, provided I do get enough money for the tickets. I'm sure I'll see some fabulous youtube bootlegs though.

It's good news for the people in America who will get the chance to see it; I'm only upset I'm not going to get this chance.

I'll be interested to hear the British fans' reactions to the overtly American style Sarich uses to play every single role.

The Germans didn't seem to mind too much...

I wonder what JOJ thinks of the new orchestrations... they're going to be a shock. Confused

Germans who probably don't know the English language and therefore probably can't distinguish between English-language accents, especially while speaking German =/= Britons who speak English and can recognise the sometimes comical way that Sarich enunciates everything with the most obvious American lilt I've ever heard.

Obviously you have never heard Drew speak German. Laughing It definitely carries over.

(And don't be so quick to assume that most Germans don't speak English...)

...Huh?

Basically I've got an American recording of LesMis and the accent just doesn't work for me ~ Master of the House is the worst. However I love this show and probably will see this Valjean... I think I saw a clip on YouTube where he stood during 'Bring Him Home' ~ I can't remember what I thought of his voice other than that I didn't hear too much of an accent but of course there is so much more that Valjean sings...

Okay, I get it, you're British. For a second I didn't know which perspective you were speaking from. To be fair to Drew Sarich (there are lots of videos of him: as Enjolras, Javert and Valjean in Les Mis, as Quasimodo in Der Glockner Von Notre Dame, as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar), his Valjean doesn't seem to have nearly the strong accent that many of his characters do--don't worry, I'm sure he'd give a good show.
mastachen

Does anyone know when this switch will happen? I'm going to ny in december and if he's performing then i think i might want to drop by and check it out.
herkind

I think it's happening in October- Drew's leaving on the 21st and JOJ is joining on the 23rd.
Electricity24601

Has it been officially announced JOJ's first night is the 23? I really want to go on his first night...

(Also, that would be pretty cool. It's the day before my birthday)
herkind

I'm not sure. I only know that he's leaving the London company the first week of October and that Drew is contracted through October 21st. I would assume that he's starting on the 23rd but don't quote me on that.
