Wow! Good Luck for the audition, looks like you've had quite a bit of theatre experience! You would be suited to many roles in les mis- remember- it is an ensemble show, and there so many characters; Enjolras (student- leader of the ABC cafe- leading the fight for freedom), Bishop, Grantaire......
Sing a song that you can show your voice at its best in, and you should easily bag a good role Very Happy

Check out www.lesmis.com for character profiles and the basic plot of les mis- also there are many pics from the show too!

Thank you SOO much... i really dont have as much experience as i should the only show i got to be in were i got to act and the director actually cared about our stage presence (our director at school doesnt care as long as you dont do anything thats distracting, i.e. over the top) was annie... the director actually went over each scene and told us our motive (as a chorus) and our disposition it was nice... i was also told not audition with anything currently on broadway... but the one song i have that really shows off my voice well (okay that i hae found i havent looked much but i love the song anyway...) is Dancing Through Life... what do you think?
p.s. sorry this is so wordy and confusing i can translate if you need lol

For a tenor, Dancing Through Life definately does show off your range. (There are many notes there that are on a Tenor's bridge that in some singers are iffy) However, in the future I would not just limit myself to that. Try and find even more songs that you like that effectively show off your range, like Dancing Through Life. (Might I suggest "Close Every Door" From Joseph a.t. Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat - in the key that Donny Osmond sings it in.) and even "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables. Theres loads of songs that could really show your range off well.

thanks so much... the audition isnt for a while not till after big river (in august) (i didnt make it Sad there are other shows i guess ha ha) so i have time to find i new song thanks alot

The bishop is a low part so don't try our for that. How old are you? How are your floaty top A's? If they are good go for Valjean. It's THE role and you can't beat it. Very Happy Good luck.

do you just mean hi A's
its funny im EXTREMLEY musically inclined and never heard them refered to as that... i am pretty hi i can sing mezzo/alto if i had to but i cant go very low (i cna go to a low d or c below middle)... the only thing is im quite uhmmm "fluffy" i guess so i dont know if im built to play a character like valjean... oh its also the school version (its a "childrens theater" the community theater added a new thing they did brundibar and once on this island recently...) if that changes anything...
Lazarus (Adam G)

Has your voice changed yet?

Because singing Mezzo Soprano roles is a tad bit unnautral for a boy.

Valjean needs really powerful High As (Colm Wilkinson does a High B, I think).

it has started its jsut not completly settled i have gone over this with my choir director (thats basically her reason when i dont make it for stuff i.e. show choir he he) but my brother was late apparently, im gonna be 16 in august...
Lazarus (Adam G)

Yeah, I'm 16 now. I was quite late too.

I'd try Valjean if you can belt those High As and Bs! Wink

You could play Marius, too. It was written for a baritone, but a tenor can pull it off easy as well.

"Gethsemane" from JCS is a good song to show your tenor range (it also requires a lot of dramatic skill, so that's another plus).

But Dancing Through Life is another good one.
musicallover09

how might i get my hands on a copy of "Gethsemane" i will look for a JCS book at the library they have alot of good musical theater music books...
Fantine

Gethsemane? He said his voice hasn't settled yet and I don't think that this is a song to handle without a strong developed voice... Those notes are awfully (but beautifully) high. Not something you should do out of the blue.

I'd say if you go for a lead, try Marius.

As for ensemble members, try something like Feuilly or an other student.
olly

Yeah, Marius was the character that popped into my head.

I agree, NOT to be sung by an immature voice, it could damage it beyond repair.

Floaty top A's means singing them quietly and beautifully. Most tenors can sing a top A in a loud storng voice, you need to demonstarte gentleness for Bring Him Home if considering Valjean. That's what I meant. If you voice hasn't settled yet though, I doubt Valjean would be for you, sorry.

Enjolras is a great part if you think you have leadership qualities [by that I mean dramatically]. It goes higher that Marius [I think] and you don't need to have God-given good looks. Wink

How are you at comedy? Thenardier is a fab role. Smile
olly

I'm pretty sure Enjolras and Marius hit the same top note: A or Ab.
Lazarus (Adam G)

I think that "Who am I" ends in a Top B, not A.

I'm sorry. Sad

You're right, Gethsemane is a difficult vocal piece. Do you guys think Heaven On Their Minds would be to much of a strain? It contains most of the notes Jean Valjean sings (High As in a few places).

i went through my collection of books and tried to find some songs i weeded out the onces i didnt like/couldnt sing well enough and here is the "cream of the crop" so to speak...
"We Kiss in a Shadow"-The King and I, "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught"-South Pacific, "Bless Yore B'utiful Hide"-7B47B, and "Bring Him Home"-Les Mis... what do you think? I can sing all of them im not sure if i should do Bring Him Home though... since its from the show...
