Les Mis on TV?

Firstly, does anyone know what's happening with the EPK? When will we be able to see it?

Secondly, I've heard rumours that the London Cast are going to be on ITV with Susan Boyle after the X-factor final. Has anyone else heard this??? Not quite sure what it would involve...
Eppie-Sue

Well, the Phantom EPK took a few months to come out, I suppose it's the same with the Les Misrables one, but I can see it being released before Christmas to make people... I dunno, buy their loved ones tickets for Christmas.
I know I wouldn't object. Anyone want to get me a Christmas present? No? Hm.

About the ITV thing... weren't there rumours a while ago? I can see it being true, with Boyle and all. I can't wrap my brain around it, though! My cast on TV?! Oooh. SHINY.
Elbow

There is definitely something Susan Boyle related going on.
Eppie-Sue

... and it looks like it includes Jeffert.

*happydance*
Elbow

Yes Very Happy I want to know MOAR. Maybe he'll update his website...

Elbow wrote:

I wanna know they are doing though - I wonder if they would be singing with Susan Boyle then?
eponine5

I'd love to see the London cast on TV (and Jeffert? Really?!) but I can't help recoiling at the thought of Susan Boyle standing in their midst. Her standing next to a West End cast would just seem so contrived and out of place. But then again, if this gets us an extra Les Mis TV appearence I guess I can't complain too much.

My thoughts exactly, but especially the last part. When has there last been a West End Les Mis cast on TV, performance and all? This is wonderful. If they only manage to translate the epicness to screen.

(is it weird that I'm excited AND nervous for them?! xD)
Elbow

I don't know if anyone saw Susan Boyle's X Factor performance last night, but she's really improved, I was shocked. Although that's irrelivant really, because yes, I agree. It will be very odd to see Jeff (and co.? )and Susan Boyle on the same stage but sort of good, at the same time Very Happy

I think it involves the whole cast ... which is very exciting!!

Amen sister. Wish it was the whole show being televised but I guess it will just be "one day more." Although not really sure how that will work with Boyle..

Well, I'm guessing she will be singing IDAD Rolling Eyes
Maybe it will be something a bit like this with the rest of the cast coming in at the end.

Can't wait though Very Happy
Eppie-Sue

I'm pretty sure it will be a bit bigger than just the cast coming in at the end of the song. We'll see.

About the EPK, it should be out in the next couple of weeks. Apparently the same people that did the Les Mis one also did the one for Oliver! right before that, and that one has been released recently.

I meant them maybe coming in after her to sing One Day More, like in the Dutch Musical Awards Gala video Very Happy

Oh and do you know why it will be Jeff instead of HPJ?
Elbow

It is going to be at some point around the X Factor final, seemingly.
Eppie-Sue

Lauraa wrote:

The most logical explanation would be that it's because they're filming it ... now? Because HPJ is on holiday... I can see that being the case, actually Wink I mean, them filming it pretty soon.

OK, I've found some info on the net at last:

http://www.netnewspublisher.com/i-dreamed-a-dream-the-susan-boyle-story-to-air-on-tv-guide-network/

http://www.icelebz.com/gossips/tv/susan_boyle_to_star_in_u_s_tv_special/ - it's being shown in the US on the same day!
jdeng

As to cast Susan for either Fantine or Mm Thenardier would be regarded as either theatrically or politically incorrect by one group of people or another, the best role for her in her first Les Mis theatre performance would probably be one of the "Turning" women.

Sorry, but what does EPK stand for?
Eppie-Sue

politically?
Well, there is no talk of casting her in Les Mis, thank God. They just seem to be part of the ITV special on her and her career. But yay, my cast on TV *gets all possessive*! : ) shiny.

And EPK = Electronic Press Kit. Aka the kind of ... 3 and a half minute trailers for musicals. There's been one for Phantom, the Oliver! one was released in the middle of November and seeing as they filmed that one right before Les Mis back in September, the Les Mis one will be out soon. With Shannon and Earl and Katie Very Happy

Did you see "your" cast on TV when they were on the news about Susan Boyle?? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh533QXr7VM) Although this was pre-cast change, and pre-mini cast change, but it's still "your cast"!!
Eppie-Sue

xD Oh, trust me, I saw that. Mr. Green aren't they cute?!

(I still think her rendition of IDAD wasn't very good. Objectively spoken, without any bias because of my hate for the hype IDAD has been getting... It only became good by the surprise factor and people cheering along. She might have gotten better over the months, but that one really wasn't that outstanding.)

Haha, cute is, surprisingly, such a good way of describing it! I think she sang fairly well, but there wasn't much sense of what the song was about somehow - I don't think it would have worked on stage.

Jeff has now announced the ITV thing on his website:

Quote:
November 27, 2009

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls.

The cast of Les Miserables 2009/10 are to appear on a programme for ITV1 that will be aired after the X-factor final to an estimated 20 million people.....thats right!

Its a documentary about Susan Boyle and we will be singing a version of 'One Day More' as a finale to this programme.

Oh there is one more thing....I will be playing Javert.

I believe it will be on Saturday 12th December 2009 directly after the Final, so set your sky boxes to record!!

As you can imagine we are all really excited, we were in the studio today with a huge orchestra laying down the track for it, as you do for TV to make it sound 'right' and it was a blast.

Hope you all catch it, let us know what you think!!

Best wishes to you all!

Jeff x

But he seems to think it's on the 12th, whereas the others sites say it's the 13th...
Eppie-Sue

Bwahaa, they'll sing ODM with the same cast that was on yesterday and all. If it sounds anything like it did yesterday xD I expect epicness. All professionally recorded with a huge orchestra. This makes me very happy. For several silly reasons.

WHOOOOO Very Happy
Eppie-Sue

I found something SHINY.

(don't ask how I found these)

xDDDDDDDDDD am very amused by all of this.

OMG I am so unbelievably excited after seeing that!!

riverdawn

Aww, such lovely shininess!

Thanks for posting these!

(And, I am now actually curious "how you found them"! :-p)
Eppie-Sue

LOOK PEOPLE LOOK I'VE GOT SHINIES. picspam.

And we already know a smaller frame of this one:
l'ivrogne transfigur

Gosh I can't wait! Smile Talking about the London cast on TV, I found a video about it on youtube - it didn't have any of the cast on it, but it did start with Killian's Jameson advert! Quite a few of them seem to have done adverts recently - Jon Robyns did that Activia ad and John Jo was on that McDonald's ad...
KeepDancingThrough

Ooooh, looking forward to this Very Happy
Eppie-Sue

Haha, met Antony in Wardour Street today and according to what the ITV people told them, UK, US and everywhere else together, they're estimating 80 million viewers. Let me spell it out for you. EIGHTY MILLION. 80,000,000. MENTAL.
I'm awfully excited for them, but also OH so nervous! Heh.
riverdawn

Wow. That is a LOT of people.

I can't decide if I'm really hoping that all 80 million fall in love with this amazing cast so they get the recognition they deserve
or I'm if hoping that most of them just pay attention to Susan Boyle so we can keep the Frenchboys to ourselves. Laughing

Seriously, though, how very exciting for them! I'm sure it'll be lovely and hope the audience will really appreciate it.
audreydarling

is this going to air in the states as well?
riverdawn

Yeah, it's also supposed to air in the States. I believe it's airing there tomorrow as well.

Somewhat oddly, I think it's airing on the TV Guide channel.
Eppie-Sue

omg less than one hour till they're on. And it's starting in a minute. I hope the ITV.com online player won't crash. Gosh, I'm excited.
Lauraa

Yay I can't wait!! Very Happy

Are they going to be on right at the end then? If so, I might just watch the last 20 mins...
riverdawn

I think they are doing "one more day" in the middle, and then "dream the dream" at the end. not sure.
Eppie-Sue

"Dream the dream"?! no.
AFAIK they're doing ODM at the end, then they part to both sides and she sings IDAD centre stage with them on the sides... and then it's confetti and stuff and it's over. I can't promise that, but I'm... 90% sure.
riverdawn

I meant IDAD of course (was typing quickly).

Anyway, you may be right. I thought it was just ODM and then she joins them, but then I thought I saw somewhere that it was two different performances, so I'm not sure now. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
riverdawn

Actually, with the show more than half done and her still needing to sing Wild Horses, yeah, it must just be the final bit.
Lauraa

Ahh well my mum's watching it so she said that she would call me when they are on.

Eppie-Sue wrote:

riverdawn

THEY SHOWED THE F'ING SLOW MO YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES

omg I'm shaking. HAAHAHA.
sorry.
LOL way to make an entrance.
Eponines_Hat

WTF? That was, like, so fast!

At least they started with DT.... wish they did the whole song, though.
Madeleine

That was amazing. I'm so excited right now. Smile

There were some lovely close ups of them all, too. Mr. Green

I'm so glad Jeff got to play Javert for it. With Jonathan as Valjean, it would have been pretty much perfect. Wink
realitybites

Just seen the Les Mis cast on the SB show and am really happy for them to get such exposure. SB's success gives hope to everyone and is well deserved. The sound was pretty bad and didn't show off the music, though - a bit like when I went to see Phantom recently - what has happened to it?!? I know nothing about sound but I notice when it's not good - and no fantastic lighting builds - like in London ,at the Queens - it really took the crescendo away from the brilliant cast.Well done Queens cast, despite this, you deserve your moment.
Eppie-Sue

Well they sped it up, they cut it (ahem) and it... was different. But vocally, the sound was bloody amazing.

I'm still laughing and shaking. Because that's how excited I am. xD I can't even remember anything but CLOSE-UPS.
realitybites

Yeah, I agree - the vocals were great but the orchestral clarity was blurred.

The camera-person is clearly a legend. I so want to watch this again but it appears to be off itv player already.... jerks.....

I swear I jumped out of my seat when it started! Just wasn't expecting it to go straight to Enjolras.

That was seriously effing awesome. Smile And so worth sitting through the cheese-fest that was the rest of the show.
riverdawn

First time ever I've been happy about the time difference between the UK and the US.

Just asked hubby to tape the American airing for me on our DVR back home, so I can see it again when I get back. Very Happy
flying_pigs

Ahhhh, I don't have a T.V at uni so I'm still waiting for it to come up on ITV Player!

I want to see close-ups dammit!
l'ivrogne transfigur

I... I didn't see it Sad - I was playing in a concert! And it's not on itv player!!! Evil or Very Mad Has anyone got a recording they could get to me???
HannahM

That was... epic. I can't believe they took it off ITV player, I must see it again!
Eppie-Sue

Yes. Epic indeed.

I was on Skype with my friend - Katfeyrac - and let her see it through webcam (yeeeah we're smart people) and I was all: "Oh, ATEOTD intro?!" and then I suddenly jerked and just went: "WHAT THE HELL? OMG DAVID!?"
... that was a bit unexpected. yes. I don't know xD From that point on I was just laughing uncontrollably because... it was so fast and it was... crazy. I didn't even listen, really, I just squealed and died. And screamed "OMG CLOSE-UP! JEFF! MARK! MARK THEY SHOWED MARK. DAVID! AGAIN!" at my PC.

LOL WHUT.

But apart from that... everyone's going... "Amazing", "Awesome" and stuff... I don't really know what you mean. And man, I don't remember anything from the performance except screaming as they actually showed the SLOW MO and, well, going "WTF? DAVID! ALISTAIR! THEY'RE ON TV. DAVID. JEFF! MARK! ANTONY! DAVID! Oh, dear... comments like this bring out the worst in me... like thinking that the last comment must be made by some old granny who still drools over Michael Ball
Mr. Green

While these people are entitled to their opinion, I really don't get how they could make comments like that about appearance! The camera didn't stay on anyone long enough - if you didn't know the show already, I doubt anyone would stand out.... well, anyone not wearing a shiny vest (or missing teeth apparently)
riverdawn

I will admit that if someone ONLY looked at David while he was singing the big big (lovely, wonderful, amazing) notes, that's not necessarily the most photogenic view of him...

But then when the ensemble came together and.... awww..... so shiny. So lovely. How could anyone not think that he is Enjolraic hotness personified?

Stupid people. Ah, well, more for us. Very Happy

As for getting a recording out to you, I'll not get back home to my DVR until Wednesday, and I'm not sure how to copy things from it, but if by then there is no decent youtube video of it, I'll do my best. Smile

I've found this which is a bit rubbish - the sound is WAY behind the crappy video - but it may keep those you like me who missed it going until something better turns up.

Eponines_Hat

yay for itv player... it is finally up.

watching it back, I can see why people who don't know the show were a bit unimpressed. They picked such a weird place to start the song, it would be quite confusing if you had never seen it before.

I still think the person commenting on appearance is a nutter, though. David and Nancy especially look preeetttty
Smile
Eppie-Sue

It was so crazy. SO CRAZY. xD I only re-watched the thing on YouTube so far, and it actually REALLY only was... "David. Jeff. David. Jeff." the entire time, wasn't it?! My God.
and it was so fast. Sad
But I love it. Look at them, they're all so wonderfully shiny.

I had kinda wondered if they had filmed the song all the way through and then just cut the buggery out of it. That is prime-time telly for you! It's funny that the performance was only, like, 1 minute long and DT still stole the show!
Very Happy
riverdawn

Yeah, upon re-viewing on the ITV player, whoever said the cast wasn't good looking has to be blind.

I mean, how could you possibly see a close up of Mark Dugdale, then of Antony Hansen, then of David Thaxton, one after the other, and go and say that this cast is anything but stunningly gorgeous?!?!

Wink
Eppie-Sue

I'm absolutely sure it will be up on YT very, very soon, seeing as part 1 and 2 of the programme already are.

But just for everyone who doesn't want to wait or just wants to look at The Pretty, I've posted quite a few small screencaps on my livejournal if you follow this link. Very Happy

-David and Jeff = amazing!
-Alistair, well, he's not my favourite Marius ever!
-It was such an odd place to start the song! Felt like it was over way too quickly.

But I still loved it!

THANK YOU. Yes, I don't like the new wig either. I loved the ringlets. But we're the minority, from what I've heard so far...

And I've slept for a few hours and the more I listen to it, the more I'm annoyed with the cuts and the orchestration and the staging and the bloody TEMPO. WTF!? It's complete, utter madness. It's so fast! They all saved it, basically, but ugh, way to go and ruin a song, ITV.
Ricey

Just watched it.
Don't kill me, but i really didn't like Alistair. It was probably just nerves but to he he just didn't sound... right. But I'm no expert and its the first time i saw a clip of him performing.

And about the whole not looking attractive thing - for starters they may not be perfect but they arnt bad. And what does it matter anyway? As long as they can sing.
SnowWhite4518

I don't like the red wig- I've never seen Les Mis on stage but that isn't how I pictured Cosette.

I don't like it either - it's the sort-of-but-not-quite waves that bother me. Just looks like the girl needs to drag a comb through it!

Meanwhile I think Emily did a great job of showing character since you couldn't hear her part at all in the song

@Eppie-Sue.... the cuts and all those things bugged me too. As much as Bowman erritates the crap out of me, how can you cut JVJ from a Les Mis song? He's the main protagonist FFS. I don't know how Cammack let iTV do that to his show
Confused

at least there was some good Thaxton pwnage and I thought Nancy did a good job of the whole "come with me Marius" thing.

oh... and Jeffert =<3

I thought everyone did a good job of characterization and I like Emily's portrayal of Cosette, I just dislike her costume. Smile

Hey, that's what my hair looks like after I drag a comb through it. Laughing

....except mine is maraschino-cherry red, so I doubt I can sell it for ten francs to the Les Mis wig department.
Eppie-Sue

Awww, Simon Shorten xD
Me: "You were... great on ITV last night."
Him: "OH that. That was..."
Me: "It was a bit tacky and awkward wasn't it?!"
Him: "... no comment. Really. No comment."

That about sums it up. Nancy seemed very understanding about them cutting her part out of the song "Oh they've got to do that for TV..." Bless her.

AND he was on just moments before saying that Susan Boyle owned IDAD - I'm a bit worried about him now tbh!
riverdawn

I thought it was particularly disconcerting when he said that IDAD epitomizes the Susan Boyle story. Has he not seen the show he produces? Does he not know what Fantine is singing about? Has he not, at least, listened to the lyrics of the song?
Vanessa20

God, I hope he, of all people, isn't one of those fangirls who think just because Boyle is homely, had learning difficulties and was bullied as a little girl, she can identify with all the deep angst the song expresses. Rolling Eyes

Not to belittle her experiences, but I don't think the angst of those things = the angst of being seduced and abandoned, forced to give up your child, and then fired from your job right after getting a letter saying that said child is gravely ill. Not to mention everything that happens to Fantine after she sings the song.
KatyRoseLand

I had a really long conversation with my boss today about the smug looking older man in this performance. Suddenly, after about ten minutes, I realised while I'd been talking about Jean Valjean, she'd been talking about Javert. Then she said the television programme had really made her want to get Susan Boyle's album... oh, and maybe she'd check out Les Mis as well.
Fantine

I quite enjoyed the performance. I enjoyed Boyle too to some extend. I think she sang with a lot of emotion... Or that may have more to do with the fact that she:
Sang some words wrong/changed them
Her voice isn't trained.
Eppie-Sue

LOL if you try and blend the voices out while listening to it, then the orchestration sounds exactly like the typical John Williams music... very much the E.T. theme. I'm not even kidding xDDD

now I have the image of all of them riding on bikes through the air, Bowman!JVJ in a little basket croaking "Phone... home..." Mr. Green
paperstars

I put myself through the experience of watching the whole terrible programme because I was convinced I'd miss it otherwise and it would end up being shown in the middle somewhere.

It felt like so much to take in in such a short space of time that I just kind of went "LOLWUT??" at the end trying to work out what I'd just witnessed. I agree that the orchestations and editting were pretty terrible, but I was still giddier than a child at Christmas after seeing it.
