Les Mis Score on eBay

I saw this and thought someone might want to buy it..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COMPLETE-PIANO-VOCAL-SCORE-Les-Miserables_W0QQitemZ7379523869QQcategoryZ31212QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have two already. Wink
Fogeyman

STARTING bid 150 pounds???

I don't think my budget will allow that.
javertsw

I wish I could buy that. Sad

That's about normal on eBay for a full Les Mis score. The expression 'gold dust' comes to mind.
Jordan

Hmm... No bids yet. If I had oodles of money I would buy it. I don't know what I'd do with it though as I cannot play any instruments or read music Laughing
B3TA07

You could carry it around as reading material. Just pretend you can read it and people will think you're even smarter; you're reading music!!
NotoriousFunnt

Well if someone has it can they scan the oboe solo for me? I want to know if I'm playing it right.
Aimee

I think I can do that for you. I've never looked but it should be there, Wink
Fantine

You have two Aimee?

WOO thanks Smile It's in act 2 after the last battle. And I'd much rather be playing that than the Hindemith sonata for regions band, ARGH.
Jordan

Still no bids!
Claire

Aaaaaarrrrgh! I want that soooo much! But I really can't afford 150. Anyone want to lend me a couple of hundred quid? or sell me a full piano Les Mis score for 20?

x claire
Aimee

If it was 20 I'd buy a third one. Laughing hehehe and yes Fantine, I love them both and got them both from eBay.

The first one I got is a REALLY early copy, it still is completely handwritten and has a lot of the old lyrics crossed out and the ones they used written in over the top. It has markings in the score and the names of the original cast written in pen by each role. It clearly was used for the Barbican by one of the cast and was sold at a charity auction.

The second one is from the 90's some time and has all the bits that are now cut too. That's basically the same as the one that for sale now. Obviuosly its easier to play from as the original is very hard to follow.
olly

Oh ... My ... God ...!

I can't believe Christmas is already over! I could have got it.

Geez, is anyone going to bid on it?
Jordan

Someone has finally bid. I just noticed the name of the seller Shocked

Ahem, yes.
flying_pigs

You put a bid in, for that much, blimey!
Kragey

Aimee, would it be possible for you to scan a few pages of those, especially the one that's Barbican-era? I just think it'd be interesting to see.
Aimee

Yeah sure. I still have to do NF's scan too. I'll do it at the same time.

edit: Done 4 pages for you to see:

You'll need to expand the page/picture to see it well. You can see some of the original lyrics on these pages. It has them dotted all over the place. Its fun to see. Smile

YAY thank you SO much! Definitely a great thing to come home to after I had regions band auditions today. On oboe I messed up the Db scale royally...so bad it was funny...it started out as a Db scale and ended with a bunch of random notes that, in another time and place, could have been a Db scale. But my E, F, and C chromatic were fine, and what I did of the Hindemith was good, heck, even my sight reading didn't go too badly at all.

The English horn solo...ok so I found out two days ago they were changing it to an open audition for English horn, so naturally I went. I got the EH solo...two days ago. I had two days to learn a super complicated solo, so it sounded really bad when I played it at the audition. But my sight reading was okay...I actually really liked the EH sight reading piece. And there are 2 spots open for EH, and as far as I know, only myself and one other person auditioned. So if I close my eyes and pray really hard that no one else did, then I might be in regions band on English horn Smile

/end audition stories
Clarinetsrevenge

Aimee, could you send me the oboe solo also? My yahoo account is [email protected] THANKS!

Wow, that original Prologue is fantastic to see! I was reading the lyrics to them whilst singing to the CSR, but then Prisoner No. 3 sings:

"I killed a man he tried to steal my wife"

instead of:
"I know she'll wait, I know that she'll be true".

It seems these pages are of a sacred nature. How did you get these?!
Aimee

They are great aren't they [and you can see other lyrics that are different too]. I got this on eBay, it was originally sold to the person I bought it from at a charity auction. They paid 300 for it. I don't recall what I paid but at the time I didn't have a score at all and wanted one. I wasn't aware of its almost unique qualitites until it arrived. Parts of it are actually quite confusing if you don't already know it.

I got the second score [like the one on eBay now] because I wanted a score that was more 'practicle' to follow and play from.
olly

I am sitting here on the verge of tears. I was outbid in the last 15 seconds of the auction and I didn't have enough time to put in another. Sad For God Sake! I've been waiting for a score like that for 7 fu**ing years. Aimee, is there any where else I can get one?
Kragey

Oh, man, it's awesome! Thanks, Aimee!

You could 'accidently' fall into the orchestra pit and grab a score in the confusion. If you look at the virtual tour of the Queen's theatre there's enough space, so if you sat in one of the front seats, then at the interval, you could buy your ice cream, then as you return to your seat, drop it on the floor, as the ice cream seeps out, arrange to trip on it, lose your balance and topple into the pit. As you fall, ensure that you grab the score in the process and either try to stash it under your coat (a downside to this is that if you require medical attention, they may need to remove your coat to treat you, thereby discovering your plan) or arrange with a friend or family member to surreptitiously pass them the score. When this mission has been completed, inform everyone that you are fine, but perhaps need some air and hopefully, they will escort you outside where you can runaway as the proud owner of a Les Mis score.

NOTE: If they take you out through the backstage area, do not become starstruck by the actors and attempt to have one (or more) of them sign your score, thereby giving the game away.

NOTE 2: This plan is heavily flawed and the author takes no responsibility for injuries, disappointments and arrests incurred whilst performing the above.

NOTE 3: Please don't attempt to do the above. At all.

Cool, thanks, I'll try that
Jordan

I notice that the winning bidder has a '0' feedback. I do wonder if they'll actually get round to paying for the item or if it'll end up being re-sold. You may get it yet as a second-chance offer. Here's hoping!
Aimee

That's a good point. you could contact the seller and say that if it falls through with the buyer you'd match his 175. Smile

I love Moci's ideas. hehehe The only probelm I can see is that the orchetral scores will only have one instrument in them so might not be much help. Wink

That's what I thought, however, I looked at his joined date and it was Jan 7th 06, so I think he must have signed up for ebay specifically to get the score.

Anyway, I've contacted the seller, but I swear if I meet the buyer.... ooooohhhh
Jordan

Well in that case I blame Aimee for advertising it on here then Wink People came, saw, and bought!
Aimee

*slaps GB about a bit with a wet trout*

Nah, lol, if it hadn't been for Aimee I would have never known about it.

Anyway, come on who won it? OWN UP!

I still love the idea though. Smile

Not least because at the last night at The Palace I was right in the front row and I saw one member of the band hand his orchestral score out to a member of the audience after the show. [Clearly s/he was one of the 'cut' instruments.] I was very enviuos.

Just a thought- won't the conductor's score have the melody/vocal parts in? That would be good as it'd be the nearest to the seats.

Glad you like my plan anyway Aimee, it's amazing how bored I was last night. Wink
javertsw

When I saw Miss Saigon, me and my friend went to look at the pit after the show because he loves orchestras, and because it was a matinee, some of the scores had just been left. I was so tempted to take one... (but I didn't of course!)
Jordan

I had the same temptation when I went to see Edward Scissorhands recently. The conductor's score was left on his stand and as we were front and centre and also virtually the first to enter the auditorium...

However, if I had, there wouldn't have been a show, would there?

That's just so British. You realise that my background is German, I'd respond better to being slapped about with a leather gauntlet Razz

lol! Ah, that's cheered me up slightly
NotoriousFunnt

Laughing Definitely love your plan, Moci. I've got this vivid image of someone trying to do it...and acting all espionage-like while trying. *cracks up*

For the spring concert at my school the band director is doing an arrangement of Les Mis. Drawback is...'tis a band arrangement so no oboe solos for me Sad Oh well, I can still dream, and now that Aimee gave me the fabulous oboe solo I can have a copy with me no matter what Smile
Clarinetsrevenge

NotoriousFunnt- We are doing Les Mis for our school musical this year and I am shocked the oboe solo actually stayed in lol. But alas, my band director gets the score and not me.. *grumble*

"Where's your score gone, sir? I honestly don't know... why have you lost it? In my bag? Oh, that's nothing, just History notes..." Wink

Ahh I know! I saw a school edition about two years ago and when I heard the oboe solo I went Shocked because I was so sure they'd take it out. Of course I was extraordinarily pleased when they didn't, but it was quite shocking! People are so lucky to be able to do that...'tis my ultimate goal, my highest of dreams and aspirations, to be first oboist in Les Mis and get to play that oboe solo. But my school is doing a piece of rubbish musical this year so I won't get to be in pit band with any of my eight instruments Evil or Very Mad But don't get me started on that.

It's awesome they left it in. But it's the oboe solo, and of course it's just too awesome to leave out Smile
Aimee

Also though, in the show there is essential action going on in the plot: Valjean waking up, taking Marius down into the sewers and Javert coming to find him. I see no reason to cut it. Smile

Unless of course [not having seen the SE] you are suggesing that you thought they would keep in the music but give it to another instrument [like keyboard].
Clarinetsrevenge

I thought they would have given it to a Piano or keyboard part. I didn't think they would trust a high schooler to be able to... Play to the oboe!! *shock*

And Aimee, could you send me the pages in the score you have wil the oboe solo? I would be eternally greatful!

[email protected]

Thanks Smile

Laughing Too true that is, though, LOL. In my school there are only two competent oboists...myself and the other girl in my band. There was another girl, but she quit last year (and...well, no offense to her, she's one of my best friends, but she wasn't exactly a competent oboist). In fact, in all the years I've been playing...basically me and the other girl are the only ones who've stayed. The three guys I started with in my old elementary school all quit, then my friend quit, leaving the two of us in high school. And the other girl isn't going professional with it.

It's a hard thing to play oboe in high school. For one thing, you either can play or you can't, and that's decided pretty much your sophomore year by the rest of the band. If you can't play, everyone berates and puts you down until you quit. If you can play, then the band director lets you stay. Then of course, no matter how well you can play, if you're not in marching band you're screwed because even if you're the best damned oboist in the area, the marching band people will berate you and put you down and tell you how much you suck just because they are marching band people and therefore they are Music Gods, and you are just an oboist who is not in marching band and therefore automatically suck. If you are good, you're on you're own, having to try your best to convince yourself that you actually are good, and stick to your instrument and hope that the both of you come out of high school alive and still able to play your instrument. Even if you are really good, you've got to spend every waking moment trying to prove to the rest of them that you are, no matter what they say.

Sorry. Playing oboe in high school is probably THE most unfun thing I've ever had to do, lol. I can't wait until college, at least there I can play with proper musicians instead of Marching Band People Who Are In Marching Band And Therefore Are Gods. /end rant

Back on topic, yeah, a lot of times I've heard they didn't give it to the oboe, they gave it to the flute or saxophone (aargh) in many SEs.
Aimee

Sod the marching band. Start your own woodwind quartet or somthing. You don't have to play by their rules. Do it in your own time, get the teachers to back you [ie rooms to pratice, recognition of your work etc]. Then you can look down your noses at the marching band snobs [if you want to Wink ].
